I thought if it might be fun if we had a game to play on this site.
The Hardy Boys Trivia Game! ;D
Here are the rules:
1 Ask 1 (ONE) question.
2 Make sure that the question is from the Hardy Boys canon not fan-fiction, or another series like Nancy Drew.

5 If no one answers your question in about two days, give a hint.

The way the UB books are going, it is probably one of those things that never gets mentioned again or is an anomaly.

Since no one seems to know the ansewer, I'll post some options.

Starting in 1959 the first 38 volumes in the original Hardy Boys series were revised, out of these 38 how many were renamed?
3?
7?
Quote from: negative_zone on August 16, 2008, 06:01:03 PM
3?
Three is correct! ''The Sinister Sign Post'' was changed ''The Sinister Signpost''. ''The Mystery of the Flying Express'' was changed to ''Mystery of the Flying Express'' and ''The Mystery at Devil's Paw'' was changed to ''Mystery at Devil's Paw''.
Also when the Handbook has revised it's title was changed from ''The Hardy Boys' Detective Handbook'' to ''The Hardy Boys Detective Handbook''.
Your turn.
Oh, cool. Uh, how bout who was the valedictorian of the Hardys' class?
Callie Shaw
yeah
Out of the first 66 volumes of the Casefiles, 4 books had teasers for other books. What were these other books and which Casefiles did they appear in?
you expect people to get this! i have one with a teaser for a Nancy Drew spinoff about Nancy's neighbor.
Yeah.
ok, this may take a while! :o
I'll give you a clue. All 4 books appeared in the early 1990's.
Casefiles #64 ''Endangered Species'' and #65 ''No Mercy'', both have a preview of A Hardy Boys and Tom Swift Ultra Thriller ''Time Bomb'', and Casefiles #76 ''Tagged for Terror'' has a preview of ''The Alien Factor'', so I'm guessing #77 ''Survival Run'' does as well.
You got one of the books that had a teaser. Tagged For Terror and Survival Run only have a 1-page write-up on The Alien Factor.
No, there are still three more books with a multi-page teaser.
And if you notice, I said out of the first 66 books in the Casefiles. #76 and 77 are outside that hint.
49 and 50 both have Tom Swift #1 Black Dragon and 65 and 66 both have Time Bomb
You finally got it! And the teasers were more than 1 page in length, right n-zone?
yeah, What car did the Hardys drive to Maine in The Lazarus Plot? I want really specific.
1958 station wagon?
yeah

I can't see it either. :(
I can't see it, just a little X in the corner. :-\
Hmmm...I can't see it now either.
All it was, was a '58 station wagon (I got wondering what it might look like)...

Okay here's the next question (sorry I took so long):
Who wrote Casefile 128 ''Explosive Force''?
The thread seems to have died once again. I guess I'll post a new (easier) question...
Okay, but when you post it, PM me the answer! ;) ;D

No, what is the question? ???
In the UB continuity how many non-ATAC issued missions have the Hardys worked on (as of August 2008)?
0
Nope. This is the whole UB continuity (including Graphic Novels, and Nancy Drew crossovers).
Try again.
2 as of August 2008. (Ocean of Osyria, Opposite Numbers)
Nope. try again.
Hint: including the mission endings at the begining of the books.
4
Nope.
3?
7?
Hint: While these cases are not offcial ATAC cases, in that they are not issued by ATAC, they often ATAC related.
*bump*
LOL!
Sorry, I don't know the answer. :-\
3
Q's got the closest so far.
6
9?
8?
Eight is correct. There are two non-ATAC cases in Graphic Novel #1, and in fact ATAC isn't even mentioned; two in Graphic Novel #7, although the main case is ATAC related; one in Graphic Novel #10, again ATAC-related but not assigned to them by ATAC; in Undercover Brothers #5, the cases are fake ATAC, so there's another one; at the beginning of UB #13, the boys wrap-up a case they stumbled on (the only one of the UB!); and then in ''Wanted'' Frank and Joe are framed, rather then working on an ATAC mission. So there you have it, eight non-ATAC cases, mind you a lot of them are as a result of ATAC (GN #7, UB #5), and those that aren't we just get the tail end of (GN #7, UB #13).
Your turn Tom.
How many Hardy Boys and related series did the Network appear in?
Three - The Hardy Boys Casefiles, A Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys SuperMystery, and A Hardy Boys and Tom Swift Ultra Thriller

Okay new rule: If the person who got the last question right does not post a new one in the next 24 hours someone else can go. Agreed?

NYPD
MI6 :D
Okay, it's been 24 hours so, as the new rule says, someone else can go...unless NZone shows up in time.

In what book did the Hardy Boys investigate sabbotoge at a musem in Montana?
Day of the Dinosaur?
Day of the Dinosaur was set at the Bayport Museum.
I'm thinking it's either The Mummy Case from the Originals, or Sheer Terror from the Casefiles.
Never read Day of the Dinosaur. Just knew it was set at a museum...and he has Dinosaur in his name.
Could we have a hint?
I'm not surprized you guys have not figured this one out, as it's a trick. From what I know there was no book with that plot in the Hardy boys series. The closest book to this plot was in Day Of The Dinosaur, but the musem is not in Montana. The musem in the mummy case was in New York, I have not read Sheer Terror, but it seems that it takes place in Arizona. I am not sure if Frank and Joe even went to Montana, Nancy Drew has, but I'm not sure if the Hardy Boys have.

I can't believe you remember so much! It's impressive!! Not quite Oliver though. There's another term that can be used for traitor but it would give the answer away....
For all of you who like to test your HB knowledge...I found a site that has tons of quizzes...
http://www.funtrivia.com/quizzes/for_children/books_by_series/hardy_boys.html

Both, really. I used to do a lot of research, though.

It was Biff Hooper's uncle. I just got the book myself...time for a new question seeing as that one was a little tougher than expected.
NEW QUESTION:
In True Thriller, who does Con Riley think is a traitor?
First hint was that "traitor" isn't the only word/phrase you could use to describe this person but it would give it away...
Last hint before we move on....
The traitor is someone we have seen many times and is not always a friend to the Hardys.
Collig?
Nope. The Gray Man is thought to be a double agent. If I had said "double agent" it would have been too easy. OK I pass the torch to SDLagent since you tried and Santa did the last one.
Darn! I was going to say the Gray Man, but then changed it to Collig. I didn't think the BPD ever came into contact with the Network.
LOL well apparently they did somewhat in this one. You're up next though! :)

Right at the end of
Dead Of Night you have the BPD interacting with the Network.
Here's the next question:
Which recurring character celebrates their birthday in one of the later Casefiles?
Callie Shaw.
Correct. Your turn.
In A Game Called Chaos what is the name of the first game in the Chaos series?
Have I stumped you guys yet?
I have this book but I don't want to answer because I just did a question. I am trying to be nice and let someone else have a turn. :)
Go ahead. I don't think anyone else knows. Lets keep the game going.
I don't remember the title offhand. I'd have to pull out my copy of the book to find it. (I want to say it was something with a gorilla in the title though...)

No it doesn't have anything to do with gorilla's.
Okay, then I'm probably thinking of the ending line in the book- I seem to recall Joe trading remarks with Phil's cousin about possible game titles and him suggesting something with a gorilla and her telling him she thinks that's been done to death. (Or something along those lines. Maybe it wasn't a gorilla...like I said, it's been a while since I read the book. I'll have to pull it out later to look this one up.) :)
Okay it looks like I've totally stumped you guys on this one, so I'll give you the answer and post another question.
The answer is: Caverns of Chaos (page 2)
Next question:
What was the name of the Chinese Junk that the Hardy's and their friends bought in The Mystery Of The Chinese Junk?
Hai Hau?
You got it.
Which member of the Hardy family has had a number of pets, including a cat and a parrot?

That's okay! Normally I check this forum more than once...a day...lol But I've been busier lately so it's no biggie.
Now hmm... *runs off to pick a good question*
NEW Question....
In Dead in the Water, name the mysteries Frank and Joe have to solve, including why they are there in the first place.
Ok no takers yet....I have another question lined up if this one was too hard. I'll give it til Friday. Then change it.
Your last question was sort of more then one question. It was questions.
Ok fair enough. The answer I was looking for was 1. Submarine Wreckage 2. Find Alvin Mann.
But here's a new one...and hopefully easier. :)
In Choke Hold, what did Frank say they called themselves?
I think they called themselves a lawyer to pursue their lawsuit against Matt and Jeff Hardy for infringing on their name for their wrestling match against Sammy. ;)
LOL No...sorry. I am asking about their wrestling name. Good one though!
Hint?
It's two words. I think they only mention it once or twice towards the middle of the book.
Hint #2: They are good old American boys.
The Dukes (of Hazzard)? ;) ;D
LOL nice try. I gave the first word. Why isn't anyone googling this??
Hmm- American Gladiators? ;D 8)
You're getting warmer. When I read this I was like WHAT? I don't get it!! Lol
Hint 3: The second word has to do with a special license that Frank has (and I don't think Joe has at this point)...
American Aviators?
I'm just totally guessing for fun here- I have the book at home- I'll just have to pull it out and flip through it later.
Aviators is very close...keep thinking along those lines...what do planes do?? They....???? ONE more day and then I am telling you answer. :)

YES THANK GOODNESS!! :) I didn't want two questions in a row to go unanswered.
I'm still not sure why they chose that name?! Frank just says it and there's no explanation. BUT anyways...your turn now. Whew!
What's funny about that is, in the Undercover Brothers book, Feeding Frenzy, Joe jokingly refers to Frank and himself as the "Flying Hardys".
There's a little Hardy Boys trivia for you to keep you going while I come-up with a question.

Come on Spencer! We need a new question to stew over...
Sorry! In the original text of The Tower Treasure, how old is Fenton said to be?
I don't have a copy of that handy, so I'm just going to guess for starters. 37
Nope. Try again.
42?

Oh man... here I am awaiting your question and telling you to ask it...and I miss it! OOPS. Anyways...the original text? Darn...I don't have that one. Um...45?
Wrong and wrong.
Keep in mind, Frank is 16 in this book, and Joe is 15.
37?
Nope. Older.
but younger than 45? Hmm I shall sleep on this...
Well, since I just finally acquired a copy of the original text of The Tower Treasure, maybe I can get the answer for this one soon enough... ;D
I'm surprised this taking so long.
I know that most of the books say that Fenton is middle age. But I also think one or two mention that he's 40.
Well, I just had a chance to check the actual book. But tomswift2002 has beat me to the punch.
Yeah I can see him being 40. It corresponds well with their ages.
40 is correct.
In the Casefiles, where does Callie keep her spare car keys?
Would the answer to this question be in See No Evil?
She has a magnetic box attached to the underside of her car.
That sounds about right but is that really practical?? Just wondering in case I come across a magnetic box and decide to put a key in there... :)
I guess it's practical enough- I'm pretty sure Frank mentions this in the course of his thoughts about Callie after witnessing her apparent death in "Dead of Night".
That's a good book! I'm not sure if I remember him questioning that or whatever but I read so much I do forget things like that.
What's your question going to be? :)
Quote from: MacGyver on February 25, 2010, 12:23:27 PM

Okay- I wanted to get the official confirmation before posting anything.
Now... what's a good trivia question?
:) Surprise us....
What's the name of Biff Hooper's dog?
Which one? Is Sherlock the name you're looking for?
I didn't realize more than one of his dogs had been mentioned in the books. But you got the one I was thinking of- Sherlock, as featured in "Danger on Vampire Trail".
Whoa whoa that was too fast! Lol OK...next question...
Sorry about that hardygirl.
Anyways, here's my question...
Early in their amateur detective careers, who was the Hardys' main competitor for new cases?
Ooh! Good one! Classic. :) I know it, but I'll give someone else a crack first.

Yes, you're quite right. :) I'm in between multiple books and I totally forgot the question. Oops. I am going to take a stab at it...Oscar Smuff. :D
Correct! Your turn.
I got one! Yay! Sorry MacGyver!
Now I get to ask one...hm...this will probably be too easy but oh well...Here ya go!
Why does Frank go to the hospital in Danger on the Diamond?
(Danger on the Diamond is digest # 90)
No idea.
But I'll guess...He gets hit by baseball?
Good job, Hardygirl847. Oscar Smuff is a classic Hardy Boys character! ;D I always found his interactions with the Hardys pretty amusing.
I don't remember this particular part of the book right offhand, (though "Danger on the Diamond" is one of my favorites- I think I've probably read this one more than once) so I'll probably have to look it up.
But I'll take a guess anyway- was he caught in the collapse of the bleachers? I do recall that happening in the first chapter, but I can't remember if anyone was seriously hurt in it.
Thanks MacGyver! :) I am just starting to read some of the Originals (gasp, I know!) so I haven't seen too much of Oscar yet. :) The Tower Treasure is our book club/discussion book so I have at least been exposed to the beginning of Mr. Smuff.
I really enjoyed Danger in the Diamond too!!
The bleachers do collapse but that is not why he goes to the hospital. Good memory though! I'm sure you will get it in no time. :)
Frank gets cut going over the stone fence surrounding the criminal's house, since the criminal has broken glass spread across the top of the stone.

Spencer, I missed your post somehow!! You were right actually. Sorry I didn't see it earlier. :( Frank gets hit in the head by a baseball and ends up staying overnight with a mild concussion. A sabotaged pitching machine was the culprit.
tomswift, he and Joe both get cut from the glass on the fence but they do not go to the hospital for it. Good memory though!! :)
OK Spencer...you're up to bat! (bad pun, I know).
That's pretty funny, actually. I, the one who hasn't read it, got the right answer and then you don't even see it.
As time has gone on, many of the Hardys' chums have disappeared, to the point where Frank and Joe don't seem to have any friends. Who was the first chum to disappear? And, no, it's not Jerry Gilroy.
Perry Robinson?
Correct!
I agree hat itis pretty funny Spencer! If you haven't read it I would definitely check it out. I really enjoyed it!
Perry Robinson????
Quote from: hardygirl847 on March 06, 2010, 11:17:42 PM

Perry Robinson appeared in 4 of the first 10 books (from 1927-1931) and then made a reappearance in the 1959 revision of
The Tower Treasure, and the character appeared in an altered form in the 1956 Disney serial (that is in the
Walt Disney Treasures line). Jerry Gilroy lasted til about 1932/1933.

Actually, Jerry was appearing in the books as late as 1944.
Okay, cool- I got it right. 8)
Well, since we're talking about The Hardy Boys' chums, how about this one:
After years (like, decades) of absence, in what book did Jerry Gilroy make a possible, albeit unnamed, cameo appearance?
Quote from: SDLagent on March 07, 2010, 08:08:37 PM
Actually, Jerry was appearing in the books as late as 1944.
Yeah, but after 1932 he essentially got dropped from frequent appearances.
what is the answer??? :)
No one knows? Perhaps it was a subtle tribute to The Hardy Boys' 75th. anniversary. Perhaps that will serve as a clue? ;)
I've heard of this before, but I can't remember the name. I think Tom knows it, though.
Okay- I'm sure someone will come up with this eventually. I was quite pleasantly excited when I ran across this myself some years ago. :D 8)
Hmm...a little detective work of my own might be in order. 8)
I would suggest looking for another of the books similar (in some respects) to the one you were last reading. :)
The only book that I can think of is #174 Hide and Sneak.
That one is very close numerically- but not quite the one I was thinking of. The book I'm thinking of really took The Hardy Boys to new heights. ;)
(Though now that you mention this, you must tell me the specifics of this mention. :D)
In Plane Sight?
No, not that one. And not those kinds of heights- but good guess. :D
*sighs* This is a tough one!
If it helps, you are really close. And now that I had a chance to look back through the book I'm talking about, I realize that this character actually is named- but by first name only. However, there's an additional clue in the passage that makes it pretty clear that it most likely is a Jerry Gilroy cameo. :D 8)
#172 Trouble In Warp Space?
As for #174 Hide-And-Sneak http://hardyboys.wikia.com/wiki/Hide-and-Sneak
I don't remember that much from the book since I last read it when it came out in August 2002 and I haven't had a chance to re-read it. But I do remember that it was one of the few post-Stratemeyer titles that actually had the Sleuth make an appearance.
Yeah, Hide-and-Sneak actually talks about The Hardy Boys dragging the Sleuth out of mothballs, so they obviously haven't used it in a while.
And as to the trivia question, you are incredibly close, but #172 is still not the book I'm looking for.
Yeah, I thought it was cool how they actually acknowledged that the Sleuth hadn't been used in awhile.
We're still on the same question?! lol Hidden Mountain?
Quote from: MacGyver on March 13, 2010, 07:45:04 PM
but #172 is still not the book I'm looking for.
Is it in the 170's?
It's not "Hidden Mountain" (but that was an awesome book, by the way) and it is in the 170s range.
Grr! Speed Times Five?
Maybe you should just ask another question, MacGyver.
Hmm- okay. I thought someone might have known this.
Well, if not- I'll go ahead and reveal it then.
If you look in Chapter 4 "Questions Without Answers" of #171 "The Test Case"- on page 41, you will see that Frank talks briefly with a student named Jerry! And it specifically identifies this Jerry as an outfielder! Jerry also implies that he knows Frank and Joe personally within their conversation. And Frank says at the end of their coversation that he'll "tell Joe 'hi' for you."
I feel pretty confident this was meant to be a little tribute and cameo appearance for Jerry Gilroy! At long last! :D 8)
All right- let's try this one on for size now.
What character who originated in the Casefiles later crossed over to appear somewhat frequently in the Digests?
Liz Webling?
BTW, even if it isn't meant to be, that is a pretty cool tribute to Jerry Gilroy.
Yes, Liz Webling is it. :)
LOL so after DAYS of trying to figure out the Jerry one...the next ? was answered right away. Go Figure. :)
It does sound like it could be a reference to Jerry Gilroy. Cool find!
Before they befriended Con Riley, who was Frank and Joe's best friend on the BPD?
Chief Collig.
Oscar Smuff ;)
Quote from: tomswift2002 on March 17, 2010, 07:55:16 AM
Chief Collig.
I guess this true, but it's not the answer I'm looking for. The guy I'm talking about is a little closer to Frank and Joe's age...
Is this in Casefiles continuity you're talking about?
Nope. Original...and not revised.
I don't think it would be Tom Casey since he didn't appear till The Flickering Torch Mystery.
For some reason I think there might've been an Irish cop along the lines of O'Malley.
Tom Casey is who I'M talking about. Con appeared way before Tom but he wasn't really their friend.
Okay- well, learned a little something about the Original series. Cool to know! :) 8)
Yeah, he's a pretty unknown character, probably because he only appeared in two stories (I think). I've only read one of his appearances, his debut, The Flickering Torch Mystery.
I've never read the 1943 edition of The Flickering Torch Mystery.
Next question.
When The Hardy Boys and Biff Hooper are in New York City what "phony" item does Biff acquire?
(I'm not going to give you the book's title, since that will give it away. All that I will say is that its from the late part of the Original continuity.)
A video game?
Quote from: tomswift2002 on March 19, 2010, 05:27:55 PM

It's pretty good. Also, not only is it the first appearance of Tom Casey, but also Dick Ames, another little-known recurring character from the 40s. Unlike Tom, he survived the revision process and showed-up in the revised text of
The Secret of Skull Mountain.
OK I'm going to take a stab at this one....
a helmet from The Shattered Helmet?
No, it's not from The Shattered Helmet.

I'm stumped.
I can't think of a way in which to even give a hint for this one, so I'll just tell you the answer. Nancy told Joe that she fed her baguette to the birds. (The episode is on Disc 2 of the Kaboom! Entertainment DVD set.)

Bacon cheeseburgers are the best! - (I'm pretty sure that's like a direct quote from Joe- I think it may be the first line of "Double Exposure". I have no idea why I would remember that. lol ;D)
But I do agree with the sentiment wholeheartedly! :D
Same here. Although, I've never really had a ham burger I didn't like. Come to think of it, though, McDonald's are rather lame.

OK so there have been no guesses lately...

It was written by a Mead.
OK I am going to take your silence to mean that you all have no clue. Perhaps it was TOO hard of a question. The answer was Locks and Keys by John Mead.
New Question: Which character in Casefiles, See No Evil #8, has a gun permit?
Callie Shaw.
Nope, not Callie.
Hmm, for some reason I thought she did, but it's been a long time since I've read that book.
Is it a regular character or just one who showed up for this book?
Well I don't think hardygirl's looking for Chief Collig and Con Riley, considering that they'd have to have a gun permit for their job.
Right, but I was thinking maybe it was the one-off character Lisa/Gina.
lol yeah cops don't count. It's funny that you said that because it didn't even cross my mind when I did the question. The person is not a reoccurring character that I know of. You are quite close MacGyver with your last statement. What is your final answer? :)
Is it not Gina?
Gina is not the one I'm looking for but you are super close.
Okay- Lisa Cantwell, then?
Yes it was Lisa. It mentions it on page 93 of See No Evil #8
You're turn!
What item does Joe keeps as a constant reminder of his detective work?
The melted keys from the Hardy's yellow convertible that blew up in Dead On Target (and which, strangely, if I recall correctly, made their last appearance in Shock Waves in March 1989).
You're right tomswift2002- it was the melted keys (rather than coins ;)), I was thinking of.
And I remember thinking it was pretty cool that it was mentioned in the Supermystery (88) title "Shock Waves". Obviously, that series is set in the Casefiles universe where the Gray Man and The Network and The Assassins make appearances and Nancy Drew apparently has knowledge of The Network. (Does anyone know if she ever works with The Network in The Nancy Drew Files? Seems like they would've recruited her too.) She does essentially work with The Network somewhat in "Operation: Titantic" as she's helping Frank and Joe with their case. Just like in the Supermystery (07) titles, Nancy Drew has knowledge of ATAC. (Again, does anyone know if she is mentioned as working with ATAC in the Girl Detective books?)
Who is the owner of the Bayport Blues?
I actually knew the last two questions, but didn't think I did. Don't know this one, though.

I think that's one of the main differences between the Hardys and Nancy. The Hardys often work undercover and for the government (The Network, ATAC, the Justice Department, or even SKOOL), Nancy, on the other hand, seems to like to work with a client and help the people effected by the case on a personal level. She even said something about this in one of the new Drew/Hardy crossovers...
Okay- cool. Good to know. To be fair though, Frank and Joe certainly get involved in cases on a personal level too (as the original version of "The Tower Treasure" clearly demonstrated.) But yeah- I can see that Frank and Joe tend to get recruited and work with the government agencies more than Nancy. I guess her main dealings with any authorities is Chief McGinnis at the River Heights Police Department. :)
Nancy should be glad that she's not in the ATAC. I'm not a huge fan of it. I love the Network because the Assassins come part of that package. I just don't see Nancy in those type of situations as much. To be honest, I haven't read Nancy by herself. She's always with my hunky Hardys. lol So I really don't know if she would get in those types of scenarios. And I agree that the Hardys help people on a personal level all the time but not exclusively.

Crap...I feel like this is in my brain ready to come out but it won't. Grr.
Hint?
The owner is a well respected baseball card collector.
Elliot Sanford Baird
You got it.
What name does Joe give to food gathered in the woods (i.e. fruit/vegetables/lichens and roots/meat, etc.) through living off the land?
Mother Nature's Supermarket (tricky, tricky, tricky,,,heading for probably the scarcest Hardy boys book ever)
Correct!
Wow- I am surprised someone got that so quickly off the bat- I was afraid it would be too rare/obscure. But yes, this can be found in The Hardy Boys Survival Handbook, of which I've been fortunate to have a copy of from my childhood. (The British version at that.) I always loved reading this one. And all of the stories in the book are based on real-life scenarios.
Good job, tomswift2002! Your turn. :) 8)
A Scary Hardy Boys book?? I'm all for it! Looked on Amazon though and ir's quite pricey. I guess I'm going to have to hunt it down for less. :) Mother Nature's Supermarket? That's so Joe! :)
Um- that's scarce, not scary. ;)
Okay- after looking it up online, I have to amend that- the scary part is the price being asked on Amazon.com :o
In 2002 Simon & Schuster made an error printing of two Casefiles. What was the title of one of the "error" Casefiles?
Nice choice on question. I know this one because I have one of those Casefiles! But I just did one so I'll let someone else guess. 8)
Crap. It's almost midnight and my brain has stopped working. I will mull this over and get back to you. Good question though! I have all of the Casefiles....I should know this....UGH!
MacGyver, you better tell us because it seems that no one else can answer it.
I'll give you another clue.
One of these books was originally released in 1987 while the other was originally released in 1995.
Hmm....Campaign of Crime and Cult of Crime?
I am stumped.
Same here.
Save our sanity and tells us! MacGyver, if you know it, please put us out of our misery. :)
Okay- I'm pretty sure the 1995 release is "Illegal Procedure". I'm not positive, but I'm thinking the 1987 release is "Dead on Target".
I hope you're right! I can't take the suspense any longer!

Okay- I'm pretty sure the 1995 release is "Illegal Procedure". I'm not positive, but I'm thinking the 1987 release is "Dead on Target".
You got it right. Simon & Schuster was reprinting Digest titles at the time and someone mistakenly thought that
Dead On Target (Casefiles #1, 1987) and
Illegal Procedure (Casefiles #95, 1995) were Digest titles (S&S was reprinting some of the late 90's/early 2000's Minstrel titles in the "New" Aladdin format). Both error printings were limited to 3000 copies each, with
Dead On Target being declared "Out Of Print" by September 2004, while
Illegal Procedure went out of print sometime after May 2006, but before December 31, 2007.
Also
Illegal Procedure's error printing is the 2nd printing for the title, so, aside from putting it next to another Casefile and seeing if it is taller, the only way that you can tell whether you have the regular Archway version or the 2002 error printing is to look on the copyright page and see what printing the copyright page says. Otherwise all the ads are the same and the Publisher is listed as Archway paperbacks.
The
Dead On Target 2002 error printing is easier to pick out, since it was actually published under Simon & Schuster's Simon Pulse imprint, so there is a different logo on the spine for the publishing company. Plus the copyright page is laid out differently from the regular Archway's. And the book is taller than the regular Casefiles. Otherwise the ads are the same.
Ok- cool. I will have to think of a good question and post a bit later on... 8)
Very interesting!!
Okay- this one should be pretty easy.
What nickname does Frank Hardy share with Sam Beckett (main character on Quantum Leap), Gary Hobson (main character on Early Edition), MacGyver (lead character on MacGyver ;)) and Superman? [Though it's to a lesser extent with MacGyver but it's literal in his case. All of these characters have been referred to as this at least once.]
Boy scout?
You got it. :D
lol Boy Scout. :) In which book was he called that?
Frank actually quotes the Boy Scout motto ("Be prepared"- which incidentally, MacGyver quotes this as well in the 1st. Season episode "The Guantlet"- whereupon he also mentions that he himself was a Boy Scout as a kid. 8)) in The Hardy Boys Digests #160 "A Game Called Chaos". Joe then calls Frank "such a Boy Scout". :D
I think Frank (and Joe) have been called that on numerous occasions.
New question. What is the name of the Italian town Tony Prito's father was born in?
Napoli
Correct.
Darn I missed it! And I would have known that one too! Oh well...next!
Funny thing is, I didn't know this (well, I forgot) until recently re-reading the 1927 version of The House on the Cliff for our Book Club.

The Crisscross Crime?

Eye On Crime was actually the last book produced by Mega-Books, even though it had been reported that Simon & Schuster took over with #151
Rocky Road To Revenge.
http://hardyboys.us/bt04.htm
Huh. Interesting.
I'll post a new question later.
Totally forgot about this. Here's an easy question to get the game going again...
In his long career, Smuff has gone from Chief Collig's right-hand man, to a wannabe private investigator. What is Smuff's third job?
security guard at Bayport High School- all the kids keep pulling the fire alarm and blaming it on him... ;D
Poor Smuff...lol
Nope.
Being the "butt" of Hardy jokes. (Boy...it's been a while since I read a story with Oscar Smuff in it that I don't remember him having a third job.)
Well, he was only referred to as "Smuff" in the one book in which he had this job. So, theoretically this could be a different Smuff, but how many Smuffs do you know?
I'll admit I know nine (Hugibert, Falconer, Tennyson, Asgard, Isachar, Asghar, Usakirana, Oscard, Oszl?r, and Rob). But there's only ever been one Smuff in The Hardy Boys.
Is this one of the original 58 books?
Yes.

Perhaps I should.
Patrolman Smuff shows-up in The Hooded Hawk Mystery.
New question: What is Chet's full name?
if you're looking for a middle name, I would have to scour the books for that. I'm guessing Chester Morton?
Chester Morton, plus something else.
Chester Morton Jr?
Correct. Your turn.
In the revised version of What Happened at Midnight, what were the name of the subway-running pickpocket?
The name is so weird that I can still remember it even though I haven't read it in years.
I don't guess it was Fagin or maybe The Artful Dodger... ;) ;D
Close ;) ;)

Well, I'm not into the Clues Brothers, the older (and the newer one, for that matter)HB/ND supermysteries, or the original unrevised versions of the Blue Spines. I'm also not in the mood to read any revised versions either. I also not much for discuss books or events.

No, I can safely say it was not a girl. In the early

Well with the original texts you have stories that are anywhere from 22 to 25 chapters long, with about 220 pages, which is far more room than a 160-170 page book with 20 chapters.
Plus, you haven't read a Hardy Boys book until you've read the Canadian editions by Leslie McFarlane. (Especially his version of
The Melted Coins.)

I think you got it, SDLAgent. I pored through the book the other day and saw that and figured it had to be it- just haven't been here to post it.
And just real quick on the subject of The Hardy Boys- I love all the books. They're all good. (I will say that I enjoy some series better than others- but for the most part, I can find something to enjoy from all of them.) :)
SDL is right.
And I don't hate any series and I do read some. I just am not into it. I've read five of the older HB/ND and three of the newer and I went back and looked at my originals and I own one that has twenty-five chapters. I guess I have read an unrevised original.

Right
Okay, now that I've got two questions right, I'll post a new one I guess.
What year did the Hardy boys first "meet" Nancy Drew?
1988?
Sounds like a trick question, but I'll say 1977. 8)
1977 is correct.
That was a hard question.
You were technically correct in the year of the first book series featuring Nancy Drew and The Hardy Boys, that of course being Nancy Drew and The Hardy Boys Supermysteries (1988) series. But their first literary meeting came in 1980 with the advent of the Super Sleuths books. (Unless you want to count some mini booklets that came with select cereal boxes in 1978 I believe, at the height of the popularity of the 1970s show.) And of course, this is where their first meeting takes places- in the "The Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew Meet Dracula" 2-part Season 2 premiere episode of The Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew Mysteries, which first aired in 1977.
And that's why I said this was kind of a trick question. ;)
Okay- next up....
Okay, here we go. What's the name of Chief Collig's nephew?
I'll leave that for someone else to answer.
I don't know. Is this from The Hardy Boys Casefiles?
Nope.
Digest?
No, but it is related to that continuity
I have no idea, maybe you should try a new question.
Okay- I'll help you all out. You can find the answer in The Hardy Boys Detective Handbook. If no one can get it soon, I'll post the answer and a new question.
To tell you the truth I've never seen it.
I haven't read it either.
He appeared in Mystery Of The Vanishing Plastics, and I had completely forgotten about him. My copy is currently packed away (we are moving in a month), so I can't check it, but I think that it might be Fred Collig.
I might still have a copy of that. Have to check. Good question MacGyver.
thanks- yeah, I know it's kind of random, but I figured that made it a bit challenging. And I can tell you that tomswift2002 has it halfway right. His last name is Collig- but his first name isn't Fred. Kinda close though, in terms of length of the name. Yes, tomswift2002 is very close. ;D
Come to think of it, I think tomswift2002 got Collig's nephew with Chet's cousin, Fred Morton. Wait, maybe that was Bill Morton. I am very tired right now.
Will someone please answer that question.
You won't hear a peep out of me about it.
(Yes, that was a clue. ;))
Peep Collig? (I hope not)
lol- not quite. ;D
Chip Collig?
No, that's not it.
But I stand by my earlier statement about tomswift2002 being really close. No foolery there.
I doubt that its Ted Collig.
No, but you're still incredibly close. It's not any old name like Dick or Harry, but it's a good one.
Ned Collig?
swift reply, but that's still not it. ;)
Tom Collig?
you got it! 8)
Through trail and error.
I was wondering if anyone caught those clues I was trying to throw out. Good job on getting a pretty obscure question right! :)

Which of The Hardy Boys books is the only one to get an adaptation that's at least fairly close to the book on more than one television show?
(Note: There could possibly technically be up to two answers for this, though I would say one is of indeterminable measure.)
The only one that I can think of is The Clue Of The Screeching Owl. Although that was only on the 70's TV series. I can't think of any story that was made for 2 of the TV series.
Thats hard
QuoteThe only one that I can think of is The Clue Of The Screeching Owl. Although that was only on the 70's TV series. I can't think of any story that was made for 2 of the TV series.
tomswift2002 got it.
The Clue of the Screeching Owl is the book I was thinking of. There was a version of this book on the 1970s
The Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew Mysteries and on the 1969
The Hardy Boys cartoon. (According to episode guides online anyway. http://www.bcdb.com/cartoons/Filmation_Associates/H-R/The_Hardy_Boys/)
I was also thinking of
The Tower Treasure since we know that
The Mickey Mouse Club did "The Mystery of the Applegate Treasure" serial as an adaptation of that book and it's possible that the first episode of
The Hardy Boys cartoon was an adaptation as well, but that's just conjecture until someone can get an official episode guide from Filmation or something.
Anyway- yeah, that one was hard, so good job on getting it! :D
Unfortunately lists for the Animated series are rather incomplete, seeing as the cartoon hasn't been on TV for close to 30 years, and no one is sure where the rights are.
In which Hardy Boys episode does a Shaun Cassidy LP make an appearance?
Oh I know this because I remember thinking "but Joe doesn't sing!" Crap it's on the tip of my tongue...err..fingertips. lol
oh say can you sing? :-\
"A Perfect Stranger"? (total guess here- I'd have to go back and look at the episodes, but I know what scene you're talking about. I just can't remember which episode it's on. But it was really cool when they did that. 8))
Here's a clue: the LP doesn't appear till the 95 series.
The 95 series??? Darn...I haven't watched those in probably a decade! I should get on that.
Yeah- I know it's on the 1995 series- I just can't remember which episode. One day I might actually have some time and watch these again. But I did enjoy this version of The Hardy Boys well enough when it was on the air and when I watched through the whole series after getting them on DVD.
I have to watch them again to decide how much I liked them or not. I just haven't had time. I should have a Hardy Boys Day or something soon. lol :)
No answer yet for this trivia question?? Was it the A Perfect Stranger episode?
Okay, I finally went back and looked through the episodes and after watching "A Perfect Stranger" again- I can tell you, it's not that episode. The episode in question is "Jazzman".

You got it. It was
Jazzman.
I think it would be funny if a Shaun Cassidy song shows-up in the new TV series. Maybe one of the boys turns on a radio and it's playing. And Joe says, "Aw, man. Turn that off! I can't stand Shuan Cassidy!"
Yeah- it would be a nice reference. Or maybe Frank catches a rerun of an early Baywatch episode and comments that Parker Stevenson's character is a pretty cool dude. :D
Okay- next question. Which of The Hardy Boys books is the first to have less than 15 chapters?
Ah, just a guess...Revenge of the Desert Phantom?
Are you gonna give us a clue like what series its in? Casefiles, digest, etc.
Clue? What do you think this is- a totally awesome website devoted to an insanely popular and awesome mystery book series? 8)
Okay, so yeah it is- and I can do that if needs be. Let's get a couple guesses at least, and I'll put up a hint a few posts down the road. ;)
And here's a clue right now- it's not Revenge of the Desert Phantom- but good guess.
The Hardy Boys Detective Handbook
Ah, a technicality. I knew I should've put up a disclaimer. I was thinking of a book within one of the Hardy Boys series and not so much the spin-off books. But you are technically right with The Hardy Boys Detective Handbook. The book I was thinking of is one of the Digests though- and it was a change for the books in more ways than one.
Mystery Of The Silver Star
Not this one either.
LOL about comments about Shaun and Parker! That would be funny!!
Less than 15 chapters?? Hmm..... *hamster starts spinning on its wheel*
The Cold Cash Caper
Still not the one I'm thinking of.
Night of the Werewolf? I was sure that had more than 15 chapters...
Nope, not that one either. But if it helps, the last two guesses both have something in common with the book I'm thinking of. (i.e. All three of those books signified the same change for the series.)
The Hypersonic Secret #135?? It only has 14 chapters.
No- I just doublechecked- it's got 15 chapters. That's not the one I'm looking for. Sorry if this is getting to be troublesome to find the title, but I guess you're well trained for that now with most of my trivia questions. ;D
Oops! I didn't check well enough.
Ok we need a hint Mac. You have hard questions! :P
There's a pretty big hint in my last post- if you aim your targets closely enough, you can hit the bullseye!
(And yes, that was a hint too.) ;)
It's either #161 Training for Trouble (April 2000: file folder cover design debuts on the Minstrel books) or #171 The Test Case (January 2002: still the same file folder cover, but now printed by Aladdin Paperbacks).
Thanks for the extra hint Mac! but Ho Ho OH NO ...I think Captain Santa Claus got it. Bah humbug.
lol
Yeah- Captain Santa Claus is the winner. I was indeed thinking of #161 Training for Trouble
I remember first reading this when it came out some years ago and noticing that not only was there a totally different cover design, but there was also only 14 chapters. I think this is the lowest amount of chapters I've ever seen in a Hardy Boys book. [Though the page count was actually still about the normal amount I normally see in the Digests (from Revenge of the Desert Phantom forward, that is)- somewhere around 150 pages or so.] I don't know if any of the Undercover Brothers books have gone any lower on chapter counts than that offhand. But that's the first Hardy Boys book to have less than 15 chapters to the best of my knowledge (and that's within a series.) Captain Santa Claus also pointed out a neat technicality earlier with The Hardy Boys Detective Handbook that I hadn't even thought of. So anyway- nice job and challenge away. :) 8)
In Nancy Drew And The Hardy Boys Camp Fire Stories, what organization do Nancy Drew, Frank and Joe Hardy solve mysteries for?
a) The FBI
b) Camp Fire, Inc.
c) The Stratemeyer Syndicate
d) The American Society of Firefighters
e) The American Society of Forest Rangers
f) The Network
g) ATAC
h) The CIA
i) Swift Enterprises
j) Clark Griswald, Jr.
k) Smokey The Bear
l) Scouts of America
Camp Fire, Inc.?
I thought that this was going to be a hard one, with the book being so scarce, but yeah, it is Camp Fire, Inc..
Your turn SDL.
Scarce? Yeah...I've never heard of it! Is it good?
Yeah, it's pretty good. I didn't see this one in time and perhaps it's just as well because I probably would've bowed out anyway. I knew this one only because I've got a copy of the book. I read it a while back and I enjoyed the short stories pretty well. If you're familiar with the Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys: Super Sleuths! books, it's a pretty similar format. Obviously, in keeping with the spirit of Camp Fire, Inc., most all (if not all) of the stories are set on camping expeditions in the great outdoors. And Frank, Joe and Nancy are essentially camp counselors throughout the stories, if I remember correctly. And they all do have short story form mysteries to solve, generally with one of the organization's principles and philosophies imbued in the story to some degree. (It's not like it's an overarching thing, but they do usually talk some about it somewhere.) For anyone who likes The Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew crossovers outside of the Supermysteries '88 series and Casefiles universe- all three of these books- Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys: Campfire Stories and Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys: Super Sleuths! and Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys: Super Sleuths! 2 offer some fun crossover stories set in the original continuity and for the Super Sleuths books anyway, feature the trio solving mysteries in both Bayport and River Heights, with additional supporting characters showing up at times too. The first Super Sleuths book also features "The Secret of Mountaintop Inn", originally published as "Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys Solve a Christmas Mystery" in the December 16, 1980 issue of Family Circle magazine. So it's fun for huge Christmas fans like me just for that. :D (I'm pretty sure the Camp Fire Stories book also features a winter festival in one of the stories, but I'm not sure if Christmas is specifically mentioned.)
Wow Mac! Thanks for the run down! :) I will have to search for it and check it out.

Well, when I first read about this book, "Camp Fire, Inc." stuck in my head because I thought it was a odd name.
In our world kids play video games on the Xbox. What console do kids use in the Hardy World?
Well, of course they play The Hardy Game Boys. ;)
(forgive me for the horribly lame joke.)
I believe it was Playstation. ???
Hint: It's not a real gaming system but has been mentioned in a few Hardy Boys books.
Would it be that awesome new system from Microsoft that you can really Kinect to:
The Z Box! :)
The Zbox is correct!
Who is the only Hardy Boys character (outside of Frank and Joe) to show up in every media appearance (TV shows, TV-movie, etc.) so far?
Fenton Hardy.
I think Chet has too.....
Captain Santa Claus has got it. Fenton Hardy has made an appearance in Disney's The Hardy Boys serials on The Mickey Mouse Club, on the 1967 pilot TV-movie The Mystery of the Chinese Junk, the 1969-1971 The Hardy Boys cartoon, the 1977-1979 The Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew Mysteries and the 1995 The Hardy Boys show.
I was thinking of doing Chet Morton too though, by limiting it just to the Hardys' friends- he would certainly be the winner there, showing up in the 1967 pilot, the cartoon, the '70s show and the '90s show. (Though it was only guest appearances for both Fenton Hardy and Chet Morton on the '90s show- but at least they were there at some point.)
I don't think Chet was in the Disney serials.
Aww man, I knew the Zbox one. :( Oh well.
Yeah, Chet wasn't in the Disney serials. His sister, Iola, did show up however.
In which book do the Hardy's visit the Perelis family?
Oh! Umm.... Passport to Danger Super mystery?????
Wow- I can tell you offhand that you got it right, but I'll let Captain Santa Claus officially confirm it. I only happened to know this because I had just glanced at the back cover of that book a little while ago before posting and recognized the name. Passport to Danger is actually the book I have out and planning to read after finishing Trapped at Sea. And isn't that ironic, don't you think? ;) 8)
I'm gonna have to make these harder.
Next question?

Let me think of one tonight. I went and saw harry potter last night so haven't been able to get on here. I have to go do a sleep study right now. Look for a new question tomorrow. :)
Next question?
Well I totally didn't do that last post right. OOPS.
OK ...here's your next question...that you will probably get right. I tend to have easy questions. :-\
Since Thanksgiving is coming soon...
In what book were Frank and Joe "trussed up like a couple of chickens ready for the spit"?
Yeah, it's not a turkey, but it's close; it's poultry. lol
While the Clock Ticked?
Like, every single one of them? ;D ;)
I'm thinking more like the Original version of The Criss-Cross Shadow.
LOL well there is one in particular that Frank actually says that line. That's the one I am looking for, Mac. :P
Here's a holiday hint...
It's a later bluespine.
Happy Thanksgiving all (in case I don't make it back on here til Fri).
The Witchmaster's Key?
The Haunted Fort?
Nope but getting there....
Another hint... Frank and Joe end up going from Bayport to 2 different countries.
The Bombay Boomerang? ???
Nope.
Hint....This title (minus words like "the" or "a" etc) is the only Original that starts with a particular letter. So it's in a "category" all by itself.
The Arctic Patrol Mystery?
The Jungle Pyramid
The Viking Symbol Mystery?
hardygirl are we close?
Sorry friends! This weekend has slipped past me! Wow...
Anyways...after reviewing the answers, the correct answer was The Jungle Pyramid. So, Captain Santa Claus, you are up next!!
btw, I think that was the longest one of my questions ever took. So yay me...lol
Again, sorry for not responding sooner.
In which book does Frank say this line: I look like a penguin in this thing.
The Hardy Boys Casefiles #61 Grave Danger
Well he's obviously talking about a tuxedo....Hmm...
Darkness falls?
Hint?
Yeah I second that. Maybe which series?
MacGyver got it. That was the first sentence from Grave Danger.
For some reason, I actually knew that one right off the bat. I don't know why, but that line had stuck in my head from when I read the book and I just knew it was the start of Grave Danger. :)
Anyway- I will think on a new question and post one shortly.
Okay- here we go. In what state in America is Bayport located?
(Bonus if you can name where this is stated) 8)
I believe Massachusetts. I think they stated it in one of the Casefiles.
New york? Im sure its either there or massachusetts
AlwaysAJoeFan got it first. It is Massachusetts!
I would actually be interested to know which of The Hardy Boys Casefiles states this.
I was actually thinking of an episode of The Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew Mysteries - in "The House on Possessed Hill", Fenton Hardy specifically says that there's never been an earthquake in Bayport, Massachusetts.
Well- good job, then! That round was quick. Next up. 8)
Cool! I need to think about a good question. :-\
Bayport is also located in New York and New Jersey. The Casefiles say the former, the UB the latter.
Quote from: SDLagent on December 04, 2010, 02:19:17 AM
Bayport is also located in New York and New Jersey. The Casefiles say the former, the UB the latter.
Bayport Buccanneers has Bayport in New Jersey, while
Hurricane Joe says that its in New York, so the UB's have Bayport being in both States.
And the Casefiles have Bayport in New York State, while the Original Continuity (1927-2005) tends to be rather vague about where Bayport is, except that it is close to New York City.
But Massachusetts was also mentioned in
Acapulco Spies, when Fenton makes the phone call just after the titles. Fenton's making a collect call and the operator asks him to where, and he replies "Bayport, Massachusetts". (The state with the worst name to spell.)
I'm still thinking. What is the time limit in the game? ???
There is none as far as I know, but I suppose if you don't post something in 50 million years, someone might eventually carry forward with it. ;)
Bayport is definitely mentioned being in different locations. It's also near a bay. I always envision it being near New York City. They go there quite a bit and within a day. Although I guess you can get anywhere in an airplane. Usually they drive or take a train though.
There's no time limit but we are always excited to see the new question...so don't take 50 million years. :) Please.
If this is too difficult or easy, let me know. In what Casefile did Frank and Joe help Dwight Trilby?
the genies thieves

Mexico?
nope
Canada? Alaska?

Canada, Alaska. Same thing! They're both cold, barely populated states in the north.

Yeah, I live in Canada (and Trevor does, too). I was just messing around to see if anyone fell for it. Looks like some of you did! LOL! Canada actually isn't a big state in the US, it's Sovereign state that's bigger than the US in size.
But some Canadians
are confused about our government. Lots of Canadians think that the Prime Minister is the head-of-state when the Queen of Canada (represented by the Governor General) actually is. The Prime Minister is the head of government.

I think Australia's pretty sparsely populated still. They have a smaller population than us and like us much of the country is largely unpopulated. Here it's the Canadian Arctic, there it's the Australian Outback.
All right- you've sold me. Let's go to Canada! :D 8)
Oh, Canada! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=75OAD_pDcJ4)
(Props to anyone who actually is familiar with this and can remember when it was first released.)
And in all seriousness, though I'm not planning on moving anywhere unless God sends me somewhere, I love Canada. There are a lot of cool things there- like the Canadian James Naismith who invented basketball, and the beautiful Canadian mountains and woods, and ice hockey, William Shatner and Michael J. Fox and Matt Thiessen (lead singer for Relient K) are from there, and of course, The Red Green Show and The Littlest Hobo and Danger Bay. And a lot of MacGyver was filmed in Vancouver and used Canadian actors and actresses. And there are a lot more things of course- particularly some folks I know there and all the cool Canadian people on this forum of course. :)
Of course, I love all countries for that matter. I like to think they all have their own beauty in their own way- and all people in those countries are beautiful in their own way too. That's how God made them. (Ecclesiastes 3:11) 8)
Olivia, I didn't know you were from Canada too? Cool.
I have nothing against Canada but I am a proud American. I actually do like Obama and I could get onto a huge discussion about it...but I won't. I really like all of you and don't want to turn our fun HB forum into a political debate.
However, I do feel like hijacking this trivia question to ask one myself...while we wait for AlwaysaJoeFan or whomever is next...
What is the diner called on the '95 series show?
Dixon's?
And to be clear, I've got nothing against Obama. I was mocking the position (of President) more than the man. I don't know what people expected from him. He hasn't worked any miracles to fix the US economy yet and that makes people mad I guess.
QuoteAnd to be clear, I've got nothing against Obama. I was mocking the position (of President) more than the man. I don't know what people expected from him. He hasn't worked any miracles to fix the US economy yet and that makes people mad I guess.
That's cool. I like some things Obama has done but I definitely don't like everything he's done so far. (But this is true of most every president really.) And I really get tired of the near-Messianic comparisons people seem to make. The government can do all they can, but he's still just a man. I pray for him and the government as Romans 13 instructs, but ultimately I trust and hold to God over government.
But as hardygirl847 said- this could lead into a political discussion that would probably be best left in the Off-topic forum, but I've said all I want to say on it right now anyway.
And to the question at hand, I think it's technically F.W. Dixon's, but SDLagent pretty much got it there.
I had already asked a question and no one has answered it yet. Mattie guessed once, then the rest of page was about Canada. :)
Huh, your right. I guess Canada just over shadows all else.
Thanks Spencer and Mac for clarification. People expect Obama to fix everything. There were even people interviewed (back when he was first elected) that would say things that made him seem like he was power to do anything. Some of it was ridiculous. He is just a man, and I at least commend him for trying to take such a sad case and turn it into something better. But enough of that...back to the question...
My answer was F.W. Dixon's. Mac and Spencer got it right. Sorry AlwaysaJoeFan! I shall have to go back quite a ways to see your question. :/
Here's his question...it was WAY back there. lol
In Genius Thieves, what does Mr. Castigan teach?

I was kind of exaggerating and joking around a bit. Sometimes it happens since we've had discussions and jokes about Canada and the U.S. before.
I agree, I don't think we should get into politics either (or not too far into it, anyway). I should have known that my comment wouldn't have stopped at just SDLagent and me. Hope it wasn't taken too seriously. If anything ever sounds "off", I really don't mean it that way.

What type of film was Buster Buckles storing in his garage?
16 mm?
Aw man, you had to pick a hard one! Lol
I did say that I was going to try to make my next question a hard one.
Here's a clue:
Buster Buckles was working in film in the era when this type of film was used, but it is no longer used.
120 mm?
No.
1556.7 mm?
No.
Okay, another clue.
The type of film that Buster Buckles used and was storing is a comparable analog to highly acidic paper being used in books.
Buster liked silent films and the film had nitrate or something in it that made it um...well...bad. Don't want to give out any spoilers. I can't think of the actual name of it though.
Yeah, I'm pretty sure I know what you're talking about, but I can't recall the name right now either. I'd have to look it up later sometime...
Nitrocellulose 8mm film???
The Shattered Helmet Chapter 13 page 113
Inside lay the old nitrate celluloid, its pungent smell rising from the tins.
Hardygirl, you got it. Buster Buckles was working in the film era when Nitrocellulose, or nitrate film, was being used Unfortunately, because the film was highly unstable, a lot of movie houses were burnt to the ground from the film catching on fire inside the projector, and a number of "room temperature" storage facilities also blew up, which led to the remaining nitrate films being stored in "cold storage", not to mention that "cold storage" also helped to prevent the nitrate from decomposing very quickly. And nitrate film was also the reason why acetate and cellulose triacetate film were invented (and in the late 1980's the current film base of Polyethelene Terephthalate or PET, which is Polyester based, but this is mostly used for post-production and release prints not for filming) in order to preserve film longer and safer. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nitrate_film#Nitrate_film)
Wahoo I got it!! That took some work my friend! Good question!
Now I will try to think of a doozy but mine rarely are...OH well. :)
Btw, there was a movie not too long ago, Inglorious Bastards, that had the lead characters use this type of film to try to kill Hitler. :o
Ah- should've known this one. Just couldn't quite think of it. The Shattered Helmet is one of my favorites from the original 58 books of The Hardy Boys too.
I knew it was from The Shattered Helmet but couldn't be bothered to look it up.

On the daily show quiz that Frank participates in, who are his teammates?
I don't know Frank participated in a daily show quiz.
Here's a hint...
"(blank), who was one of Frank's teammates on the daily quiz show, was tall and gangly, with tightly curled red hair and a freckled face."-Page 2, The Prime-Time Crime, Digest # 109
I knew what book it was- I just haven't gotten around to looking it up yet. But I'll give someone else a chance to answer first.

I've checked the rules for the Trivia Game, and I don't see anything in there that says that you can't.
In that case, in order to narrow the field and confirm or deny a suspicion I had, does the event described in the question take place in one of the Frank and Joe Hardy: The Clues Brothers books?
The event takes place in one of the books that does not exceed 100 pages.
Okay- that definitely helps. :)
I know which book but I can't think of what Chet tells Frank. I know that Chet works on a hot dog cooker powered by the sun....UGH...I don't have a good memory. :(

Okay, here's the answer.
From pages 3 and 4 of All Eyes On First Prize:
"I wonder if I could invent a new food," Chet said thoughtfully. "Something that tasted good, filled you up, and had no calories."
"We have it already. It's called water, Chet," Frank answered.
New question.
What is the name of "Mr. Spanish's" coin?

Is it Pedro? :)
No, it's not Pedro.
Darn! I knew it was a long shot.
No one has any ideas?
No, sorry!
I know that rare coins have come up in a couple of Hardy Boys books. I'm pretty sure you're not talking about The Vanishing Thieves. I guess I can state the obvious here. Is this coin perhaps one of The Melted Coins? (in either the original or revised text)?
It's from the original text of The Melted Coins.
Ah- well, I don't have a copy of the original text for that book. I'll take a guess for fun though.
Peso?
Dinero? ;D

Mr. Spanish??? LOL He could have named his coin after himself. :P
Christopher Columbus? Hernando De Soto? Ferdinand Magellen? :P Again- we're not as smart as you think we are , Tom. :(
In The Melted Coins, 1944, "Mr. Spanish" gives this coin to Aunt Gertrude because she only collects female coins.
Santa Maria
No. (Does no one have a copy at home? I realize that the book wasn't reprinted by Applewood, but it was out till 1970, so there are tons of copies at used bookstores in both DJ, even without the DJ, and PC form. Or even in a library?)
Unfortunately, The Melted Coins is one of the original text books I do not have yet. It's possible I could find it at a library- but if it hasn't been reprinted by Applewood, then I'm doubtful that the library would have it. Although I do run across quite a few original text books every so often at various used book stores and antique stores and such. But it's getting to the point where you may just want to call it because it doesn't look like anyone's coming up with this answer anytime soon.

And, okay, wow, for one that I thought someone would get right away, it sure turned out to be Hard Question #2 in a row. The answer was a "Dona Luisa" (sorry I don't have a key on my keyboard to do the squiggle line over the "n" in Dona)
Anyway, here's a new question (which I hope is easier).
Within the first 30 pages of
Danger On The Diamond, which previous case is referenced by name?
Wow we were all way off.
Sorry Trevor!!!
But this one I know for sure!! I LOVED this book! Frank gets knocked out with a baseball for crying out loud! :)
Desert Phantom is my final answer.
I think it's actually Revenge of the Desert Phantom, #84 in The Hardy Boys Mystery Stories. ;)
Mac, yes that is the whole name. However, it is referred to (in the book) as Desert Phantom. It can be found on page 17. :)
"The van had been given to Frank and Joe by Chief Collig after the y had solved the Desert Phantom Case." It's a blue police van...which reminds me a little of their high tech black van from the Casefiles.
I guess it depends on how picking Tomswift is about the answer. ;)
Well, it didn't really matter whether it was the shortened title or the actual title of the book, so I'll give it to Hardygirl.
LOL- I know. Sorry- I was just being a wiseguy. ;D
LOL oops...I meant "picky" not picking. Oh well. typos...
Mac, I know you were. Hence my smileys. :)
Tomswift...Thanks!! I FINALLY got one! And it didn't take forever.
Now to think of a really good question.....
Well I'm not sure how "good" of a question this is...but here it goes.
What is the name of Alena's housekeeper in Night of the Werewolf?
Tony Micelli - Ay! Oh! Oh! Ay! ;D
??? ???
I take it you're not a Who's The Boss? fan.
LOL Mac....I don't know why but I totally did not get that when I read it before. NOW I do. lol Yes, I was a fan...it's just been a LONG time.
Sorry- I can't resist on these things. I'm a huge fan of my '80s sitcoms- mainly the shows I grew up with as a child- I still love watching them in reruns today- and I generally are better up on them than most current shows- lol ;D
Let's see- other possibilities- Hazel, Alice, Mrs. Garrett, Adelaide, Pearl, Mr. Belvedere, Geoffrey, Nell, Florence, Karen, and of course- Charles! ;D
Okay- for real, it's "Elizabeth or sometimes just Eliza."
Quote from: hardygirl847 on February 23, 2011, 02:10:44 PM
What is the name of Alena's housekeeper in Night of the Werewolf?
Pocahontas.
Mac,
That's cool. I haven't seen that on reruns in years though. :)
Sorry your names were not correct.
Tomswift...you got it.
Ah- okay. I was kidding around with that list of names- but I was serious on that last one. And technically it is correct too, but I'll concede to tomswift2002 on this.
[Although being a TV fan in general, I couldn't resist throwing out some other famous TV housekeepers, after getting the ball rolling with Tony Micelli on Who's The Boss? ;D)
For the record- the others were- Hazel (from Hazel), Alice (from The Brady Bunch), Mrs. Garrett (from Diff'rent Strokes and The Facts of Life- though she was only a housekeeper on the first show), Adelaide and Pearl (both of these ladies were the later housekeepers on Diff'rent Strokes after Mrs. Garrett went to work at Eastland), Mr. Belvedere (from Mr. Belvedere), Geoffrey (from The Fresh Prince of Bel Air), Nell (from Gimme A Break!), Florence (from The Jeffersons and the short-lived spin-off, Checking In- though she wasn't a housekeeper on that show), Karen (from a couple of classic Season 3 episodes of Family Ties), and of course- Charles! (My good friend Charles from Charles in Charge of course.) ;D 8)]
Anyway- back to the question at hand. "Elizabeth or sometimes just Eliza" was a serious answer though and it was a direct quote from page 30 of Night of the Werewolf- however, I forgot that I have a later Minstrel printing of the book. In the original Wanderer printing, the housekeeper is called Pocahontas and in both she is identified as half Mohawk Indian. Apparently, the name was changed to Elizabeth in later printings, due to people complained about Pocahontas being offensive- I guess a racial stereotype or something along those lines. Anyway- I was thrown for a while on that until I remembered reading this on The Hardy Boys wiki and there you go.
I actually thought that you'd call it a tie, since the 2005 Grosset & Dunlap version uses the original Wanderer (1979-1986) text (Pocahontas), but the Minstrel texts all use the altered text (Elizabeth, 1987-1996, or whenever the Minstrel book hit the out of print lists).
Anyway, trivia question.
Which Uncle of Callie's is in an industry that deals with trees?
QuoteI actually thought that you'd call it a tie, since the 2005 Grosset & Dunlap version uses the original Wanderer (1979-1986) text (Pocahontas),
Okay- I was actually wondering about that. Thanks for the clarification.
As to the current question, I'm pretty sure I actually do know this one offhand, but I think I'll give someone else a chance to answer first. :)
Oops! Sorry for the confusion there. I didn't realize there were two names that could be correct. :(
As for the new question...is this from a Casefiles?
Quote from: hardygirl847 on February 26, 2011, 08:34:17 PM
As for the new question...is this from a Casefiles?
Yes. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
As I was looking at my Casefiles collection, I picked up Deadfall and sure enough...I was right! Stan Shaw is the answer.
Okay- depending on how technical Tom is going to be about the wording of his question, I think there are also two names to this question that could be correct.
Oh no...not again. lol Well, if you have the other right answer, I will definitely give the question to you. I just did one or two recently. :)
Well, when I first saw the question I immediately thought of Adam Shaw in Pure Evil, who also works in an industry that deals with trees because he harvest maple syrup from them. Though technically, the book says Adam is Callie's great-uncle.
Judging by the number of smilies on Tom's last post- I'm guessing he set this up as a trick question. ;)
That darn Tomswift!!! lol
Well, if he accepts your answer, have a new one ready because YOU'RE doing it. :D
okay- I'll think of something. :D
Still waiting on a verdict, huh? :)
When do we get a new question? ::)

How about now?????
Macgyver got it by recognizing it as a trick question. Callie actually has 2 uncles that work in industries that deal with trees. Her uncle Stan (#60) is an environmentalist trying to protect trees, while her Great-Uncle Adam (#97) makes maple syrup.
Nice! Slick trick, there Tom.
It is pretty funny that the Casefiles would give Callie two uncles who work in tree industries.
okay- new question.

Well, then you should give some of the Original 58 Grossett & Dunlap books and the Digests a try.
And I imagine you probably have read some of the Nancy Drew & The Hardy Boys Supermystery ('88) series though. Or is that too much Nancy Drew for your liking?

Of course, those books won't help you with this question though. ;)
But I do think they're worth reading if you get a chance. But it's up to you- I wasn't trying to deride you for having different preferences or just not having read any of the other books yet. I keep forgetting that I grew up with the Originals and Digests and can remember when the Casefiles were first introduced- even though it doesn't always seem that long ago. :D
I think I know the answer. Part of it is part-of-the-title of a late-90's Digest?
Hmm- I don't think so, unless Chet's taken more than one undercover name. I probably should specify that he only used this in one book as far as I know and not on a regular basis.
I suppose that's the problem with these kinds of questions. Since there are so many of The Hardy Boys books and different series- and different writers at different times have written different scenarios that don't always stay in one single continuity, it's easy to see how I might have one answer in mind but it could easily spiral from there into a lot of other possibilities. (I don't think there are that many other possibilities in this case, although admittedly I can think of some other possible choices.) But hopefully this will help bridge the gaps in this mystery for you. ;)
Well, since no one's taken a stab, here's my guess:
Gator Two.
Sorry, no, that's not the one I was thinking of. I'm not actually sure where that one is from- but if no one else can guess it, I'll give it to tomswift2002 since there seems to be more than one possible answer. But look closely at my last post- there's a big clue in there. ;)
Now we just had to figure out what the clue is (I have an inkling) and what it means. :)
Yeah, hopefully someone will get it soon- otherwise this thread will just drag on and hang on like a ball and chain.
(And yes, that was another clue there.) ;)

Which of the Hardy boys' mysteries started "with a sneeze"? "Quite a few sneezes actually."
I know it was one of the early Digests... Sky Sabotage?
The Deadliest Dare #30 in "The Hardy Boys Casefiles"
I'm pretty there was a Digest, too, but now that you mention it I do remember that in The Deadliest Dare, too.
I just remembered that exact line in The Deadliest Dare - but a similar opening may well have been in a Digest too...

Okay.
Which of The Hardy Boys books was dedicated to the boys and girls of Alaska?
The Alaskan Adventure?
Given the title, that would probably make sense- but no, that's not the one.
LOL it was worth a shot. ;D
The Arctic Patrol Mystery?
The Mystery at Devil's Paw was in Alaska but I think it might have been one of the handbooks. The Hardy Boys Survival Handbook?
Sorry- no on JHR's and SDL's guesses.
The Hardy Boys: Campfire Stories?
No.
Give me a hint! ::)
Probably not, but Trouble In The Pipeline? :)
Hmm- Frank and Joe do go up to Alaska in Trouble in the Pipeline, don't they? But sorry- that's not it.
Let's see- a hint....
Maybe I should clarify and say that this book was initially dedicated to the boys and girls of Alaska, but it doesn't have this dedication in later printings. That should narrow it down a lot! ;)

Actually it was only on the Original Text version of the book due to Alaska just becoming a US state the year of the book's publication; it was removed with the Revision Text in 1973.
Right- I know. I was trying to say that but still be a little vague about it to keep the guessing alive for a while longer. ;)
Well, Mattie got the answer then- it was The Mystery at Devil's Paw - and as tomswift2002 said, it was dedicated to the boys and girls of Alaska only in the original text printing because it was printed in the same year Alaska was added as the 49th. state to the United States of America- 1959.
Technically, I feel like I should give this to SDLAgent because he came up with the right title a while back- but then again, technically he hadn't offered it as a guess. So I guess Mattie can go ahead and do the next one. :)
Okay, I'll post a question as soon as I think of a hard one.

The Shattered Helmet in Greece?
Okay I'll post one as soon as I think of one. :)
Let's keep the game going...
Okay sorry umm... In Flight Into Danger what is the name of Max's daughter?
Moira.
Yes Katie you got it.
What book did Frank and Joe investigate hazing?
Hazed. Maybe?
In what book did Frank and Joe investigate a great mystery at an airport?
I'm gonna venture a wild guess-
The Great Airport Mystery? ;D
Whoa. Yeah, you got it!
Hmm- I'm gonna have to find an easier one- these are getting to be just too challenging ;D
Okay- what's the name of Frank and Joe's other aunt?
Janet Hardy
(Technically this could also have been Gertrude as either she or Janet would be the "other aunt" comparatively ;))
But yes- I was mainly going for Janet Hardy, as named in "The Secret of Mountaintop Inn", the short story contained within Nancy Drew and The Hardy Boys: Supersleuths!
I was looking at this the other day and trying to figure out the family tree- I assume Janet is Fenton's sister-in-law, thus he must have a brother. [It seems highly unlikely Laura's maiden name would have also been Hardy, though I suppose it is possible.]
My next trivia question would be then- who are Karen Young's parents and what's her connection to Frank and Joe precisely? (Though perhaps this is making too much out of a short story that probably isn't exactly considered canon by most...)
I posted (http://www.hardyboyscasefiles.com/forums/index.php?topic=1913.0) about Fenton's mysterious brother awhile ago.
ah, okay- I forgot about that. Thanks for the link- I'll add to the conversation there then.
So, I guess it's my turn to post a question?
Which Hardy Boys story was originally written in German?

One of the Digests, right? The Submarine Caper or something...
You got it. The manuscript was written in German and then translated into English.
I thought I remembered correctly.
What was Frank and Joe's originally motivation for buying their car?
To pick up chicks, of course. ;D 8)
Not quite. To pick-up something but not chicks...
Hmm- okay, well maybe just to pick up their friends on their way to school- particularly on Fridays- but Callie and Iola could never decide on which seat they should choose... :D
What interests Frank and Joe more than girls?
mysteries, of course!
Right. So what would Frank and Joe "pick-up" with there car?
Okay- if this is explicitly stated in the original text book somewhere, I'd have to research it some...
I'm guessing either criminals or crime fighting equipment...
The actually buy it to solve one of their early cases...
Okay- I think I've got it now. The Shore Road Mystery- they get a car as bait to break up the car theft ring.
Correct!
Cool. Okay- what next?
What's the name of the other Hardy boy?
Chris Hardy.
You got it- as revealed in #22 of The Hardy Boys Casefiles, Double Exposure (though yes, he's technically more like a foster son of sorts...)
What was the name of the local TV show that the Hardy's hosted?
Whatever it is, I'd watch it! :)
Bayport News? lol
They hosted a segment called "Crimestoppers, Inc" on "Faces and Places" in the book Danger on the Air 8)
I was thinking of that one, but I figured I'd let someone else answer it... I think Hardy Sleuth has it, but I'll let tomswift2002 confirm, of course.... just curious because that would've been my guess too
It was Crimestoppers, Inc..
Your turn, Hardy Sleuth.
Cool ;D
Thanks, SDLagent! 8)
Next question: In what book (one of my favorites 8)) do they go to the Palais Paris?

Hint?
I already gave two hints in the original question. And the book specifically said that Con Riley had three reports on this something.
Hmm- I'll have to go look it up then. As far as I know there are only a couple of possible books that this question could be referring to, so that will narrow down the search... ;)

Which book was that in?
(in Dead of Night, #80 in The Hardy Boys Casefiles)
What's the name of the Hardy Boys' dog?
Biff's dog was Sherlock. And Chet had two dogs. I can't remember the Hardys' dog!
Yep, I knew about Biff's dog- didn't realize Chet had two dogs, though I'm not surprised since he lived on a farm. I'm sure one of the books must have mentioned that somewhere... But yeah, at some point in The Hardy Boys' history, they do have a dog. This one I feel is going to be pretty tricky but you can get it. ;)
I don't know if Chet ever had two dogs at the same time but he had one and got a new on in Screeching Owl.
Okay- I do remember him having a dog in The Clue of the Screeching Owl now. It was even mentioned in The Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew Mysteries episode version of that book, "The Mystery of Witches' Hollow", as Fenton is seen having a time of having to dogsit for Chet's dog. :)
Anyway, keep looking for the answer- I'm sure you'll see it somewhere soon enough.
I'd forgotten that about "The Mystery of Witches' Hollow". In the book, he bought the dog in the Witches' Hollow area though.
Sneakers? (from The Doggone Detectives)
Hmm-not the one I was thinking of actually- wasn't even aware of that one, but I'm not surprised, especially given the title and the nature of the series, that The Hardys were shown having a dog somewhere in The Hardy Boys: Clues Brothers series.
So I'll give you that one on a technicality, but there is another dog mentioned and it's in more of the normal Hardy Boys continuity. (i.e. Frank and Joe are both 18 and 17, respectively- at least I would view it that way.)
I have, like, some faint memory of this. Kinda bugging me.
So did anyone ever figure out the dog I was thinking of? It may take you a minute as it's kind of a small thing but he does play a fairly important role in one Hardy Boys adventure- and it's quite a sight to see!
Is it from Crime In The Kennel.
Don't they look after a dog in The Melted Coins or something?
I would have to check both books... I'm beginning to realize there probably have been a good number of one-time references to dogs with The Hardy Boys.... I've been trying to give subtle hints, but perhaps I should just come right out and say it- the one I'm looking for is not in the books as far as I know
I don't recall any of the TV episodes that I've seen, or video games, where the Bo's have a dog.
Yeah- this one is kind of unfair since it's a hard-to-find appearance- so I'll just go ahead and say it- I was thinking of Tiny, who appears in the 1967 pilot The Hardy Boys: The Mystery of the Chinese Junk- but since you got the dog from the Clues Brothers book that I wasn't even aware of earlier, I'll give it to you.
Quote from: MacGyver on November 24, 2011, 07:09:07 PM

huh. I didn't remember that at all. And, as you know, I really liked the pilot.
it was a pretty minor thing- the dog briefly showed up when The Hardys first go home and Aunt Gertrude greets them at the door with her doctor friend- and then later on Tiny helps keep the criminals at bay at the end of the pilot...
Oh, yeah. I do remember the ending now.
I haven't seen the pilot yet.
ah, then that one was unfair for you. Anyway- you've got the next one. Go for it. :)

8 track ;D
A music format (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/8-track_tape) that was popular back in the '70s. It became something of a joke later on with the introduction of cassette tapes...
Somehow as a kid I was never aware of these until years later... I had LPs and cassette tapes (and much later CDs) but never 8 track tapes. Of course, now I can find them all the time at thrift stores. ;D
A friend of mine who works on older cars once found a working 8 track player in a vehicle and told me he was able to keep the player and so he set it up in his truck to listen to some of his old classic albums. That's pretty cool- I like older technology. :)

Now that I hear the answer, it does sound familiar. Was this the name of The House on the Cliff in both the original and revised versions?
I think it was. I know it was in the original.
Yeah, I've read the original text recently enough to know it's in the original... I should have remembered that one... oh, well.
As for the revised text...I read it many years ago now....
The house is called the Pollucca place in the revised version.

Ok, who were the Hardy boys trying to rescue in the "Borderline Case"?
Mr. Morton? (I may be off on the name- I'm referring to the Hardys' teacher there with them in Greece.

okay- no problem. I'll have to look through the book again for that though...
so.......anyone ever figure this out?

Okay- thanks, Mattie. Let's see- what's a good question....?
Well, this is kinda Hardy Boys-related and kinda not at the same time, but- What cartoon character made an appearance on the cover of The Hardy Boys Casefiles #69 Mayhem in Motion?
My Pet Monster
Yep- I always wondered how Simon & Schuster got the rights to My Pet Monster, but I guess they worked out a deal. I can't remember now- does the book actually acknowledge something about that character being there in the artwork?
I don't remember t being mentioned in the text, but it might've been put on to indicate that Vaneesa Bender's mother had worked on the show.

When I first saw this question, I immediately thought of Evil, Inc., since that book is set in France as well. But when tomswift2002 mentioned that it was "sort of" from the Casefiles, then I started thinking the 1990s show, which also had some episodes set in France. And I'm pretty sure I recall the scene he's talking about. However, I don't recall what Frank's comparison was right now... if and when I get a chance, I can pull out my DVD set at home and check though.... :) 8)
Sounds like I've stumped you guys.

Any takers?....
So I guess no one else knows this one? Do we need a hint?
Pocahontas/Elizabeth. (Night Of The Werewolf).
Yes, that is correct. Good job. :) 8)
(I have both a Wanderer and Minstrel printing of Night of the Werewolf- Pocahontas is originally used in the Wanderer printing and then it's changed to Elizabeth in the Minstrel printing. I'm not sure why Pocahontas would be a discriminatory or offensive name somehow to use for a Native American character- but apparently someone thought it was an issue and decided to change it for the Minstrel version...)
The Grosset & Dunlap reissue used the original Wanderer text, so the character's name was Pochahontas in the recent editions.
Next question:
At school, what was Tony Prito falsely accused of?
QuoteThe Grosset & Dunlap reissue used the original Wanderer text, so the character's name was Pochahontas in the recent editions.

Well, considering that the G&D version also used the internal pictures from the Wanderer edition, I think it was probably easier for them to reuse the Wanderer printing plates rather than retype setting the books. (Especially since the Minstrel plates would've Ben type set for no pictures.)
Oh, well- duh (on my part)- that's a good point too. 8)
No guesses yet? Well, just to confirm my hunch- is this from a Digests story?
No.
Hmm- one of the original 58 then? (OT or revised)
No.
Hmm- well, then I'm thinking maybe it's from the Casefiles?
('Cause if it's Undercover Brothers, I won't know it- haven't read enough of those to know-lol. One of these days I may still read the rest of that series.....)
Not the Casefiles either or the Undercover Brothers.
Hmm- okay. That narrows it down then. I will have to keep digging on this one......
Well, I suppose I'll ask to be sure- is from either The Clues Brothers or Secret Files series?
You're getting warmer.
Okay- was it pulling the fire alarm (without an actual fire in progress, of course)?
So....am I right? :)
You got it MacGyver. The incident occurred in First Day, Worst Day.
Aha! I thought so. First Day, Worst Day is one of the few of The Clues Brothers books that I have. I read it a while back and vaguely recalled that. One of these days I might invest in getting the whole series for both The Clues Brothers and Secret Files, but I just haven't really felt the need. I'd rather keep up with the Hardy Boys Adventures series at this point... (But I do have some books from both series, just for the sake of completion and having at least some from each series.)
Okay- I think I'll do a pretty easy one next. Which Hardy Boys book was the first of the books that were not revised?

Next trivia question:
What is it about the Pollitt house's location that caused Chief Collig to contact Captain Ryder? :)

You're definitely thinking of the right book and about the tunnels and the need for the Coast Guard, but Captain Ryder isn't with the Coast Guard, so it's a different reason about that for the answer to the trivia question. :)
Is Captain Ryder with the state police, and Collig needed them because part of the property was in Bayport, and under his jurisdiction, while the other part was under state jurisdiction?

Yeah, that's what I thought..... Um............... ???
Here's another clue.
At the time of the imprint change, another trait of the published series was also changed.
Okay.....I must admit I'm a bit stumped on this. I keep thinking of the later rerelease of some of The Hardy Boys Casefiles, particularly #95 Illegal Procedure, which was slightly taller than the usual Casefiles and according to Amazon's listing (http://www.amazon.com/Illegal-Procedure-Hardy-Boys-Casefiles/dp/0671882066/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1414698680&sr=8-1&keywords=%22Illegal+Procedure%22+%2B+Hardy+Boys), it was apparently under Aladdin. (Not that I trust Amazon to always be accurate in all its listings...)
If that isn't what you're talking about, then I guess maybe- Grey Castle?
No, Grey Castle was an independent licensee and was not owned by Simon & Schuster (unlike Archway and Aladdin). Aladdin also is not correct. Although, "Illegal Procedure" is a clue.
Okay then- I'll have to keep digging...
Pocket Books?
No.

Yeah, Simon Pulse was the answer and only one book was published under the imprint:
Dead On Target. It was published in 2002 by accident, along with
Illegal Procedure as someone at Simon & Schuster was given the job of reprinting Mystery Stories titles, and for some reason this person thought Target and Procedure were part of the Mystery Stories. And, as far as anyone knows, the printer just reused the Archway printing plates for Procedure (with the exception of taking the 1 off the copyright page), even though the Archway imprint was no longer in use by 2002, but the changed the plates for Target so that the book came out under the Simon Pulse imprint, and the copyright page even mentions that the book was first published by Archway and Simon Pulse is its second publisher.

Oh wait- it just hit me. Rosalind Chao.
Yeah it's Rosalind Chao.
Nice job, MacGyver! 8) What trivia question have you got for us? :)
What criminal did The Hardy Boys catch who coincidentally shared the name of a famous science fiction writer?
Okay MacGyver, I guess no one's going after your question.
Anyway, here's a new trivia question.
In which Casefile is the Hardy's van first mentioned?
lol- after only a year? I'd forgotten about this thread. I think I'd have to look it up to find the answer myself to my last question. (When I get a chance, I'll find it and post it.)
Thanks for reviving the thread, tomswift2002.
I'm pretty positive I know the answer to your question, but I'll see if anyone else wants to take a crack at it first.
Okay- to answer my own last question, the guy's name I was looking for is Larry Niven, known for his Ringworld book, among many others. If I recall correctly, a character (who turns out to be the villain) by this same name appears in the "Danger in the Sky" story in Nancy Drew and The Hardy Boys: Super Sleuths 2! book.

Okay. Larry Niven is also known for his Star Trek Animated Series episode "The Slaver Weapon" where he crossed his Known Space Universe creatures the Kzinti into Trek's universe. The Kzinti's were going to make an appearance in Star Trek Enterprise's 5th season, but obviously that didn't happen.
But I thought it would've been like Stephen King or Christopher Pike (another Trek-related author).
But back to my question. It may seem easy, but really, it's not.

Anyone going to guess?
I didn't know Larry Niven had contributed to the Star Trek universe- and I definitely didn't know Christoper Pike had! (Captain Christoper Pike sure- but not the author. ;) ;D)
Now that you mentioned this about the question with the van, I feel like I may need to revise my earlier guess. However, if no one else is guessing, I'll put out what I feel now is the "obvious" answer that may not actually be technically right now.
Dead on Target
I figured someone would go for the easy answer. Unfortunately, "Dead On Target" is not the answer.
Okay- that's what I thought. In that case, I feel like I know the answer for sure now, but as I said earlier- I'd rather let someone else guess first.
Anyone else giving to take a guess?
Okay, then- I'll put in my other guess. Cult of Crime?
Yes it's "Cult Of Crime". And it's Joe who appears in it first.
Okay. Well, while we're speaking of vehicles, what book outside of The Hardy Boys Casefiles mentions Frank and Joe's yellow sedan after they get their van?
Is it a Digest? #88 Tricky Business?
Whoa! An old thread resurfaces! I will have to try to remember what answer I had in mind and get back to you.
Well 8 months isn't that long.. same year at least!
It's not Tricky Business. And speaking of tricky business, I should mention that the book I have in mind does not directly mention the car, but it is referenced nonetheless.
The Criss Cross Crime?
That's not the book I had in mind. I will have to review relevant passages- it's possible there's more than one valid answer for this question.
108 Fear on Wheels?
Not that one either.

Not that one either.
What about No. 87
Program for Destruction?
Not the book I have in mind.
Alright, my last guess is #90 Danger On The Diamond. Anything thing else would just be a random guess unless I do a lot of reading first.
That book is one of my favourites, but it's not that one either. Maybe a hint is in order....?
This book also mentions a particular driver in relation to the car.
Cult of Crime?
Not the one I was thinking of, but it's entirely there may be more than one book that mentions it. I'll double check this later today when I can.
You are closer on track though.
So it's a Casefiles? Or is it a SuperMystery'88?
Maybe... ;)
I think I remember something about melted car keys in a Casefile, The Lazarus Plot?

Joe had his melted keys stolen in "Shockwaves" from the SuperMystery'88 series. So maybe it's "Shockwaves"?
Yes! Shock Waves is the book I had in mind. Joe's melted keys to the yellow sedan are stolen and he is determined to retrieve them as it's a tangible reminder of Iola for him. Well done, guys. :) 8)
Congratulations! I don't remember, are the keys mentioned in Dead on Target?

They are in Chapter 2. Joe tells Frank that he went down to the scene of the crime, and was talking to the crime scene techs, and he was given the keys by one of the techs to show just how hot the explosion was.
Where were the girls heading when Joe threw a snowball at Bess?
Any guesses?
Um... The Chateau Frontenac?
No.
The SuperMystery where they are in Quebec is the only one I remember with snow. Does the snowball throwing happen in a SuperMystery 88?
You're thinking of New Year's Evil. But, no, that's the wrong book (and series).
Into the ski lodge.
No.
To the mountaintop inn?
No.
The Shoreham Bank?
No, but close.
The Shoreham City Trust
No.
The River Heights Bank?
No. Here's a clue: the girls were going to get something done for Christmas.
The River Heights Shopping mall?
No
Ok this question has been up for a year :o. Somebody needs to come up with the answer. I unfortunately have no clue.

Really, with that last clue, it should be obvious about where the girl's were heading, as it's a place that most girl's and women head to before Christmas!
I guess I made a really good stumper of a question! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
The mall?

The mall?
CalvinKnox already said that, and the answer is no. Although it is possible, but it wasn't mentioned in the story, this place might be found in a mall. Although, this place can be referred to by two descriptive titles.
Hair salon?
Hooray! Lol. Total guess.
In the story, it was the hair salon that the girls were going to, to get their hair done up for Christmas. But I would've also accepted 'beauty salon'.
I'll try to restart this. Casefiles 18 to 31 have something in common. What is it?
They all have nouns in the titles and they were all released in the awesome 1980s! :) 8)
Believe it or not, you're actually somewhat on the right track
Just realized I never closed the loop on this one. The answer is that each book's tagline has "always" in it.
Haha! Nice to finally have closure on this. I never noticed that but I'm not surprised. So does this mean I get to post the next one since I had the closest guess? ;)
Sure
Okay. I think this should be a fairly easy one. (I will admit I have a secondary motive here of generating conversation because the topic of this question never seemed to get much discussion on here, unfortunately.)
What Hardy Boys book is referenced in the last episode of the 2020 The Hardy Boys TV series?
(There may be multiple answers to this but there is one in particular I am thinking of that I think should have been at least somewhat obvious on the show.)
