This thread was inspired by some discussion in the "#20 Feeding Frenzy" topic, about how little people know about the current Hardy Boys series, so the question(s) is...
How many people do you know who currently read the Hardy Boys, and out of those people how many read a current series?
The thread is called "How many of your friends read Hardy Boys?'' but doesn't have to be your friends, can be anybody you have met.
Well, I know of about 8 people who read the UB's.
Other than you guys I only know one, but then agin reading is not exactly the cool thing at my school. :(
None that I know. Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Tom Cruise, none of my friends are big readers. ;)
Haha n_zone! I got you beat. Britney Spears, my bff, is reading the HB:UB for therapy ;)
mystery chick - 8 people? Wow.
My dad used to read them all the time to the class back in the day. Now, if I find a particular good story from any of the series (Originals, Digests, Casefiles, UB, whatever) I pass it onto him. I guess I'm his weeder. Or tester. W/E ;D
I few family members read it and a few other people, but those were only the originals. I had a friend who read all of them, and we loaned books to each other. Several years later, he's kinda of gorwn out of them (Literaly, he's at least 6 feet!). My cousin also reads them.
Only one person I know reads them, and my dad used to like to read the Classics when he was a kid.

oh, yeah, my sister too, I can't believe I forgot her! Sorry JHR..
Thats OK... >:( :'(
My brother reads them sometimes, but probably not as much as he used too. (He got me into the series) Anyway, he doesn't really read the UBs (he's only read Deprivation House so far, but he plans on reading the rest of the Murder House Trilogy.)
I know seval adults who have read the books, but gave them awyway, and they were all classics.
One day, me and a freind were digging through a cloest and found the Hardy Boy's ghost stories! He let me keep it. ;D
I have convived another one of my freinds to read "Day Of The Dinosaur" and 2 nancy drew books, but she dosn't seem intrested.
Do you mean "connived"? Either way, good luck convincing her :)
Maybe she'll like the HBs better, unless she's already reading them!
yeah, no one wants to read anymore.
I visit the Star Trek discussion board over at Simonsays.com and right now we've got someone over there who wants an answer about the ebook releases and doesn't want to write a letter and send it by the post-office after he's sent a couple of emails and made a couple of phone calls that went nowhere.
Wow. See, the thing with e-mails is that they are easy to ignore and delete. Like we discussed before, letters just seem more authentic.
But since he wants to know about ebook releases, it looks like he's in an electronic/digital rut.

Speaking of ebooks did you hear Amazon made the Kindle 2?
Okay, wow. I do not even remember posting that comment about Britney Spears and it was only a few months ago (it seems a lot longer).
I?m afraid to look at some of my old posts now lol.

I have to confess. I brainwash people. First, I brainwashed my BEST FRIEND to read HB, then he brainwashed to my other Schoolmates :-[. But now, I dont think they still read but they're SO SO Addicted to The X-Files, I brainwashed them too to watch the episodes in my DVD. Theyre now ALIEN PSYCHOS! u can find theyre names on the HB Wiki. on Featured Users, find they're names: frank nancy677, paulamae32, Star HBpillado, and Hb nicole.

Very interesting :-\
None. My parents did, but I am usually made fun of by siblings etc. for still reading the Hardys. If only they understood the pleasures of Casefiles. (Especially Chapter 1 of Dead on Target!)
I know a few people who have read a few but so far, I'm the only one I know who still reads them.
I found out my boss and one of his ?right-hands? used to read them all the time. Once they found out I read them, we had a whole conversation about it and ended up laughing because we couldn?t believe it.
It was great 8)
My father has read a couple, but I usually just tell him the stories at dinner or any other time he bored. One of my friends owns a couple but he is more into computers then books.
i read
my friend also reads it
Im the only person as i kno
I know a few other people that read The Hardy Boys (or at least like them.)
Two of my friends, at least. One has been reading them for a long time and he never knew I liked them. ::) I got the other one started on the Hardy Boys. ;)
i let my friend borrow Dead on Target but she only read the part about the fight in the end and then gave up
Dead on Target is awesome! I can't believe she gave up!
Only a few people I know even know who the Hardys are. They are WAY understated and definitely not appreciated...not like they should be!

My brother did that.
Its sad
I LOVE the Hardys so it's really hard for me to understand sometimes why people won't give them a chance. Truthfully, my friends who actually read BOOKS are more into romance, or more "girly" type of books. I realize that I am a girl and read the Hardys...but I also started when I was 12. I don't know if the girls I know now would be able to get into them like they get into their Nicolas Sparks books or what not.
However, if S & S and the powers that be actually made an effort to REALLY bring them back into popularity...things might be different. Maybe not. At least they would have more positive exposure and be available to more people.
QuoteI don't know if the girls I know now would be able to get into them like they get into their Nicolas Sparks books or what not.
Nicholas Sparks does have some great books out there. He's a good writer. (I don't read his romance novels, but I have read "Three Weeks With My Brother", which is a wonderful autobiography of sorts, as well as memoir to his family. It's a very moving read and quite enjoyable.) :)
I dont get why people will read romance over mystery
That brings up an interesting question because some of the Nancy Drew novels tend to blur this line. Not the originals necessarily but perhaps some in The Nancy Drew Files and definitely in Nancy Drew on Campus. And obviously the '88 Supermysteries played around some with Nancy and Frank possibly having a spark for each other but each dealing with their respective boyfriend and girlfriend in the mix too. I know The Hardy Boys books have a bit of that sometimes too but generally not as strong as with Nancy Drew I would think. And I guess it makes sense as typically (not always) girls tend to like romance more and boys tend to like mystery and action/adventure more.
(Note that I am just making a very generalized observation that is not always true for every individual person, regardless of gender.)
However, the book of the month for October will actually deal with some of these themes, among others.
Thats y read more hardy boys than nancy drew
You make very valid points MacGyver. I like to read a romance or "girly" type of book once in awhile. I won't lie. But when it comes to my FAVORITE ....it's mystery/adventure/danger/hot boys. Hence, where the Hardys come in!! Lol A good fight or good knock on the head or even a good chase is thrilling. I haven't read enough ND to really add to what you said, but I can see what you're saying.
Nicholas Sparks is a wonderful writer! I ALWAYS cry at his books or movies based on his books. Don't even try to watch The Notebook without a tissue box!
I like a lot of different genres. I enjoy them for different reasons too. But give me some mystery and mayhem with two cute boys anytime!
lol I know...I am weird. :D
As for the book of the month (for October)...I am definitely reading this one again. It's been too long and frankly (haha) it's a good one! Nice pick :)
well, not that I really celebrate Halloween- but I figured might as well read a scarier book in October just because of Halloween and some out there do celebrate it. I don't care much for the roots of the holiday and I'm not a big fan of scariness and horror movies and such in general (but some is fun sometimes ;D)- but I do like to read "Dead of Night" around this time of year- it adds to the effect.
dang it i just read Dead Of Night a couple days ago
too early- you gotta read it again this month. ;D
lol- j/k. But do participate on the book of the month club thread if you like. I'll post one for "Dead of Night" somewhere around Oct. 15th. or so.
Ok thanks! :)
MacGyver...Halloween isn't my favorite holiday and scary movies are not my fave either. But a little here and there is okay. Like you said, the book adds to the effect of the season. :)

Yeah, well, the roots of Christmas aren't that great, either. You can't let it bother you.
the pagan roots with Saturnalia- yes. But that's precisely why Constantine declared December 25th. to be the day to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ so that the earlier pagan rituals done during that time could be supplanted by something better.
Well, Halloween was meant to scare away evil spirits. That's a good thing, too, right? LOL
yes, I guess so. My theology just takes issue with the methods and hence my queasiness with it. But if kids want to wear costumes and go around the neighborhood and get candy, it's fine with me. A lot of churches do "fall festivals" around that time of year which basically serve as their alternative to Halloween. Although going to such events at church and getting candy in lieu of trick-or-treating at random is probably safer knowing you can trust the people at church. Not saying that you can't necessarily trust your neighbors, but still- I don't think I'd go up to a random house with someone I don't know and ask for candy. You can never be too careful...
hmm, poisened candy... ;D ;D

Forget the costumes! Just give me the candy and I'm good.
No, actually, I had a lot of fun when I was younger trick-or-treating. I know some people who wont let their kids do it, but I think it's pretty harmless fun.
i suppose, other than rotting kid's teeth out, the candy collecting is not, in and of itself, bad. it's just all the spirits and stuff. we know that they are real, but we don't need to celebrate them.
Nobody celebrates "spirits" on Halloween. Not for a few hundred years, anyway.
Yeah- in general, I don't really care that much about or make that big of a deal about it. But I do take note of the origins so I am a bit leery of it for that reason. But that aside- I still wouldn't be taking any kids of mine (if God should decide to bless me with a wife and kids in the future) to strangers to ask for candy- I just feel safer doing an activity at a trusted venue, such as the church.
We should change this to "Do u believe in halloween and its meaning?"
LOL. What's to believe in?
Witches, goblins, and myths -Idk
as much as we hate to believe it, witches are real. of course, with God on our side we don't need to be scared or anything. as for goblins though, i don't believe it those. and myths are just, well...myths... ;D
I dont really believe in the supernatural
ya know, heaven could be considered supernatural ;)(see you signature). also, the Bible acknowledges mediums and the like. they have no power over us, but i believe the Bible is true, and the Bible acknowledges them.
I just put the signature beacuse i think its funny, i mean not ha-ha funny that doesnt mean that i believe it
so are you a Christian or am i mistaken?
yea i guess that would be it
uhmm, am i mistaken or am i not?
fine, your not
The David Crowder Band wrote a pretty neat book with that title- "Everybody Wants to Go to Heaven, But Nobody Wants to Die".
That is funny, isn't it? But of course, though there's still some trepidation on how I might die, I know that I don't have to fear death itself because as MacGyver said in the "Passages" episode- "Death's not so scary. I don't think it's the end of anything; more like just another step along the way." And for me, I know I have put my faith in Christ to save me and so death is just another step along the narrow way that leads to Heaven. :)
(And with that said- yes, I also acknowledge this thread has gotten way off-topic. We seem to do that a lot here- lol. ;D)
true, true! but what do you think about the witches and stuff, mac?
Witches are real and so are warlocks. They were around in Bible times (1 Samuel 28 mentions the witch of Endor in particular) and people still practice witchcraft today. And God definitely condemns that practice. (Deuteronomy 18:10, for one).
They are some who practice Wicca, which really falls under the same thing- and I've known a few Wiccans. Wiccans talk about using natural earth forces, but what force is that? What it comes down to is this- there are only two forces of power in the world. The forces of good and the forces of evil. The forces of right and the forces of wrong. The forces of God and the forces of the devil. Of all the supernatural phenomena out there, I believe in a few things- I believe in God and His angels and the devil and his demons. What people describe as ghosts or evil spirits translates into demons for me. The only good Ghost I know is The Holy Ghost. ;)
1 Corinthians 10:14-22 talks about idolatry and that when people worship anyone other than Christ, they are really worshipping demons. There are certainly a number of other passages in The Bible to look at on these topics. (Ephesians 6 is another great passage for instance.) Like DarkMist said, it's not something you necessarily need to be scared of when you know Christ as Savior, but you should be wary because even Satan masquerades as an angel of light. (2 Corinthians 11:14)
But take heart- because greater is He that is in you than he that is in the world. (1 John 4:4) And Jesus has overcome the world. (John 16:33) :D
WOW! that's like, exactly what my dad says! (and in case you where wondering, that's what i say too!)
Does that mean I can now use that cliche phrase- "Who's your daddy?" ;)
(j/k- I just couldn't resist a dumb joke.)
(But you and your dad have a good Biblical grasp on what God says then.) :D
nuh-uh! it's no excuse dumb (or cliche)! and yeah, my dad's cool. 8)
Yeah, he definitely sounds quite cool. Sorry- don't mind my earlier post. I was just being stupid. :-[
mmmm, i hadn't noticed ;D no really, it's cool.
Wow this thread got WAY off topic! lol
i finally got my friend hooked on them! yay! :D
YAY!!!
Yeah i was telling her about them and she said i was weird but then i let her borrow one of my books and she liked it. :)
OK so which one did you get her hooked with?? I have some suggestions! :)
Wanted from the UBs
Wanted is one of my favourite UB books.
Its the first one i read
It should probably be the last one, too.
Yea i like the casefiles better
I have Wanted but haven't read it due to poor reviews for the UBs... I guess I need to give it a shot if you think it's good.
DEFINITELY check out more Casefiles!! They are THE BEST. There are some great originals and digests though too!
I give every HB book i find a try and most of them r good

I once tried to get my little brother to read them and he read #1 of the UB books....he said he loved it but then he never read another one >:( lol. Btw, is it just me or is it insulting that they put 'Ages 8-12' on the back of the Undercover Brothers books..? Lol.

It's just the reading level. Like newspapers are grade 5 level (or whatever people claim).
But for the UBs, I think it's kind of the maturity level at times too...
