On the List of Hardy Boys books article on Wikipedia,it says that the fourth book in the new ND/HB series is called Gold Medal Murder.
I hate that name. :P
I love that name. ;D
I don?t think I like the name either.
The Gold Medal Mystery would sound better.
I liked the other kind of names, like Club Dread, and Terror on Tour. :( :P
Chapters.ca, Amazon.ca and Amazon.com are all giving Gold Medal Murder a July 6, 2010 release date, and all three have this plot synopsis:
Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys are on the case when a Summer Olympics scandal breaks out in this Nancy Drew / Hardy Boys Crossover
Looks like Simon & Schuster goofed up again. The Winter Olympics are being held in 2010, not the Summer Olympics, which are being held in 2012. I think it's pretty early to be trying to tie into the 2012 London, England Summer Olympics. Sure I realize that Sabotage At Sports City had the Olympics set in that book in the US, but at least in the real world the 1992 Olympics were happening in the summer.
Ah man, that's lame. I wanted the Hardys to come to BC!
how bout ATL again!
I'm just starting to read this. Of course I've only read about 3 pages so far.
But I have noticed one thing with the Series list page at the front: apparently Club Dread is the 3rd Hardy Boys Undercover Brothers SuperMystery book, taking place in between #27 Double Deception and #28 Galaxy X.
But no mention is made of Terror On Tour or...or...or...or...(what's the name of the second NDGDHBUB Super Mystery'07?), in either the Nancy Drew Girl Detective or Hardy Boys Undercover Brothers list.
Now why would they leave out Danger Overseas?
because it was, excuse me, crap.

ha! technically, it's not a UB book. it's been tainted by nancy drew. and, contrary to popular belief, i do not love every UB book.
That wasn't a crack against Nancy Drew, was it? 'Cause like Relient K, I love Nancy Drew- yes, I do. ;D
sorry, but yes i am putting down nancy drew. and getting the almost unignorable urge to utter a few...not exactly G-rated words while doing so.

What!? Stone her, stone her!!
humph. i thought i clearly stated at one point that i quite strongly disliked thrill ride.
oh yeah, and with what i said earlier. i didn't mean i was like cursing nancy drew or anything. i meant that...well, i just all of a sudden felt like ahem, ya know...
Let he who is without sin cast the first stone ;)
(I think we might all be guilty on the UB lack of love deal- lol.
Except for the Nancy Drew knocking thing- I'm definitely a fan. But don't let her "Girl Detective" portrayal taint the overall character.
[Even though I don't know that it's honestly all that bad.])
sorry, mac ole buddy, but i strongly dislike all of nancy's series and personalities.
(and now that my opinion is stated, i'll be quiet about it :D)
Why do you dislike Nancy? You keep saying how much you dislike the character, but you haven't said why yet.
i really don't know. there are quite a few reasons to make me dislike her but i know that those alone are not enough. i guess i just can't enjoy another detective series after the hardy boys. but, no, i like the three investigators and tom swift. maybe i just don't...meh, i dunno, just don't care for her at all
I love Nancy Drew! Now, my feelings are hurt.
yeesh, sorry, baby :)
Don't make fun of me!
alright, man. i'll be nice (for now)
Hmm- interesting that two of the female members on here don't seem to care much for Nancy Drew and at least two of the male members (I'm including myself here) definitely love Nancy Drew pretty well. Of course, I also love The Hardy Boys and The Three Investigators and I enjoy other detective series too. Tom Swift is cool too, but I don't know that he really fits the "detective" genre.
Oh well- interesting...
me not liking nancy has nothing to do with her being a girl. she is just...cheesy!
so do you think she doesn't really resonate with girls today as realistic?
yes. also, she just doesn't, ya know...excite me. it's just blah...
okay- just curious.

Here's one female that loves her. Clearly. haha Although I don't know how I feel about the GD series yet.
And I just started reading this book. I got it today. I'm not too excited yet. I really liked Danger Overseas and I thought the last one was pretty good. Maybe I'll get into it more later.
I finished it today. I wasn't so thrilled tbh. I didn't care for it. I found it all over the place and too fast. The plot was lackluster and I felt it sounded like a bunch of little pieces of old ND/HB plots put together. Besides, it's a ND/HB book but they weren't together that often. I was disappointed.
And have the characters been cursing in the later UB/GD books? I haven't read them because my library doesn't carry them but they didn't before. Ok, once but that was it if I am correct in the UB series and never in GD series. I mean I can see it with Joe and even Frank. When I write ff, Joe is usually the one cursing if I even include it. But Nancy? NEVER. Just never. So I'm not happy at all with that. I know it's not the f-word or whatever, but still, I'm surprised and a bit disappointed because frankly, it's not necessary. Especially when they use it no where else! How come the bad guys have such clean mouths? Seriously.
What did Nancy say?
Okay- I had heard there was some cursing in some of the UB books but I thought that was just on the part of the bad guys. I'm really not liking hearing Frank, Joe and Nancy cursing. There's absolutely no need for that. (There's no need for cursing from any of the characters in those books.)
Yes- I know the Casefiles have a few pretty rare occasions where it might say someone swore, usually under great duress (not that that justifies it). But at least that's better than actually writing out any words. I know they're human characters and they do have flaws, but I don't need to see curse words written out to illustrate that. And I'd definitely rather not see them curse at all.
I remember one Casefile where Joe swore but they didn't put the actual word there. Besides you can't blame him when they're hanging around atomic bombs with loads of peoples lives at stake and someone misses something up.
Quote from: SDLagent on August 18, 2010, 01:35:01 AM
What did Nancy say?
Just damn. It's nothing off the scale but I don't see the need. She's never cursed in 80 years. Why start now?
I actually don't remember actual curse words in the casefiles but I haven't read them all. It was referenced that someone cursed but the words never were said. When I was a kid I thought that if it was in a HB/ND book then it couldn't be bad. Well not so much anymore.

I agree. I don't want to see it. And I've read one other HB book where someone cursed and that was a UB. But that was it. I was really floored by this book. And definetly not in a good way.

I know that in #102
Terminal Shock the author has Joe mention that Frank sometimes swears at his computer when it won't work right, but Joe doesn't actually say the words.
Exactly- that's always been standard. I mean, even The Bible records instances of people swearing, as when Peter swears with an oath in his denial of Christ before later repenting. (But that's all that is recorded- never any actual words.)
Well, lots of things happen in the Bible that you wouldn't want in a kids book. Hardly comparable to a book like this.
very true. some things there really shouldn't be in a kids book. however, i have noticed in a lot of books that the author says the person swore, but not what they said exactly. unfortunately, it's rather common...
What I meant was that even the Holy Scriptures record where people swore, but doesn't record any actual words. It used to be that when authors did include curse words- at least for some of the "big bad" words- they would use dashes so that the whole word wasn't actually printed. And there is a spiritual point with this because even though it may be a word that you tell yourself you would never use- constant repetition puts it on your mind. And I'd rather not have to see such words at all, particularly in children's literature.
Well, having the first letter and than dashes doesn't help much either. We all know what it says so it doesn't really help.

exactly what my mom says!
(oooh! freaky! ;D ;D ;D)
true.
I remember when Kobayashi Maru by Michael A. Martin and Andy Mangels came out in the Star Trek Enterprise line, in one of the later Chapters there is a line where the character doesn't speak the word, but thinks it, and I remember that over at the S&S board on Star Trek a very large debate began about the authors and editor's allowing that word to be printed. And sometimes, when I look at older books and younger books, in terms of when they were printed and not in terms of age level, I can see how there were higher standards in the past, and instead of using swear words in the text, the authors were forced to think of different ways to describe the way the character or characters were feeling without using an actual swear word.
I thought about that myself. Cursing and being aware of cursing is apart of a kid's world now-a-days. But you can still not curse -- I don't. And to have only Joe and Nancy curse blows my mind. I'm not going to lie that I don't want it cursing in the books at all. I don't mind referencing them cursing - except Nancy. I really don't like her doing it. Okay I hate it. - To me, it's not a big deal if they reference it, but I just wish they'd leave the real thing out of the books.
I don't curse either and one thing I've always liked about The Hardy Boys is that you could count on them being clean in that regard. Kids today need strong role models who do the right thing- they see plenty of the wrong in the real world as it is.

Hey I've been gone forever!! It's good to be back :)
I read this crossover, and thought it was okay.... the story wasn't great, and I really didn't like the cursing either. I know that they weren't really bad words, but I was still pretty surprised to see them, especially when Nancy said them. I think when there's cursing in books, it just makes the characters seem...I don't know, immature or something. It's just Nancy and Frank and Joe are supposed to be role models and stuff....

I agree. It really was surprising and weird. I wonder if they're trying to make them
seem older since some of us were complaining that they were written really immature before. It's just out of place, though. It doesn't really work :-\

I didn't particularly like this book at first, but I thought it got pretty good in the second half. I liked the action, and when I figured out who it was, I was a little too excited. It's been a long time since I've read any ND/HBs.

If S&S is trying to make them act more mature...well, most of the immature people I know, swear a lot.
well then, you must swear quite a lot, SDL! (JK!)
Another note on the swearing issue- I noticed this review for "Gold Medal Murder" on Amazon.com where the reviewer mentions that Simon & Schuster claimed it was an editorial slip and that the swear words would be removed in future printings. (At least for this book- I don't know if that applies for other books where curse words have slipped in.) Now that's interesting- I hadn't heard this. Perhaps S&S realized that they've definitely tarnished The Hardys' and Nancy's images, so they're trying to correct it. I don't know how much truth there is to this story (if any). Anyone else hear anything on this?

I guess I'm thinking media content with language like that is normally for an older audience. A lot of older teens and adults swear in media, so I was kind of speculating that they might have been trying to have them seem like older teens instead of kids.
I definitely see your point about the cursing not really being a "mature" factor, though.
From
MacGyver's post I see that it's probably an error. But who would write that in the book in the first place? That's a little off.
Either they had a writer who blatantly ignored set guidelines or just assumed it was normal usage language and it slipped in- and then Simon & Schuster caught it and are having to apologize for it. That's my guess.
Makes sense. It just feels strange that it really is just random people writing these books. I'm well aware about ghostwriters, but I feel like they put a little more care into it back in the day. Or it was just a different society, I don't know. I'm going into this too much.
Originally from reading the reviews on this one I didn't even buy it. It just so happens that I received it as a birthday present. So now I do own it. I am definitely interested in reading what words you are all talking about. I am sure I will surprising too.
A ghostwriter that is used to writing those things might be more prone to accidentally insert into into something he or she's writing...even the HBs. A lot of us are sooo desensitized to it, it becomes something we don't even think about.
I'm glad that someone is making an effort to correct this issue since the Hardys' image shouldn't be ruined by one story. ND's either, for that matter.
PRESERVE our classic characters, PLEASE :)
Can someone tell me why they even had to swear? I don't get it or see any reason for them to do so.
Me neither. I don't think any of us do. That's the point- there never is a need for swearing. The Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew should avoid that vice and set a good example for kids (and everyone).

Do you think that S&S slipped up or are they trying to make them fit in more with today's times? :-\
From what I read somewhere, their official word is that they slipped up and newer printings will supposedly have the offending words expunged. And not everyone in today's times believe in swearing- so it would be nice to maintain The Hardy Boys as the paragon of that high moral standard that they've always had and that kids (and adults) should strive towards.

Yeah. :) Unfortunately that's not the case, anymore. :( Just wondering, when did they start having Frank, Joe and Nancy Drew swear in the books?
Apparently a few words have slipped in here and there in some of the Undercover Brothers books- I think at first it may have just been the bad guys saying bad words (which I'd still rather not read in a Hardy Boys or Nancy Drew book no matter who's saying them)- but then Frank, Joe and Nancy have all apparently used some foul language at different places. I just noticed in the first few pages of Forever Lost that Frank says a phrase I'd prefer they didn't use.

As Mac said it was a slip-up not a policy change. No one at S&S ever said "From this point on Frank and Joe will swear or anything like that." I'm sure swear words have slipped into
Hardy Boys books for a long time but there usually edited out before publication. Overall, there's been more mistakes in the
UB than in past series and the swearing is just one aspect of that.

Well, some people might write this off as mild or not that bad, but essentially Frank was calling my God, but not really addressing Him. Thus, it's still taking The Lord's name in vain and I don't care for that.

I found that scene and I don't think that Frank said it, but rather someone in the crowd did. But still, I don't think it belongs in a children's book.
Okay- well, at least it wasn't Frank saying it then- but it still doesn't need to be there. (Of course, the first person narration sometimes makes it hard for me to tell who's saying what. Of course, that's just from glancing through them though.)
