Title: What Would YOU Like to See?
Post by: Olivia on July 18, 2008, 10:01:53 PM
I really didn't know where to put this topic, but anyways...

If we can't really change the overall concept of the HB:UB series, what little things (or big things, I guess) would you like to see featured?

1. I think it would be good if one or some of the books could show Frank and Joe actually training at ATAC headquarters physically and/or intellectually. I would like to see how and what they learn, and what kind of things they would do.

2. They could also go and get one of their assignments in person at a meeting, which would give us a picture of the people working there along with what the place looks like. It would also be interesting to see other people discussing a mission with them. I know the point is for them to do it on their own, but whatever.

3. Finally, the brothers could even take along a trainee on a mission, or help a trainee out in some way. There's many possibilities with this (both on a serious and/or humourous note).

:)

I think you may be on to something here.

If ocassionally more time was spent detailing more about ATAC and giving more stories dealing with ATAC itself rather than just having it play an obligatory story opener, then perhaps ATAC would be a little more interesting.  At least for a little while longer.

I think this is a good idea, as well. In the other YA spy series I read, he always gets his mission details in person.

Maybe S&S should do a story, in which it becomes to dangerous for ATAC to use the method they use currently for contacting their agents Something like, WARD starts sending out fake mission CDs, and other things along those lines, tricking them into traps.

The ATAC tech team adds more security features to the mission CDs, but WARD still manages to use them to their advantage, and ATAC if forced to change their method all together. Contact agents are assigned to certain areas, to be the contact for that area's ATAC agents. Nigel Penhurst is assigned to the area, that Bayport is included in.

Or something like that.

As for three on your list, something similar to that, was recently done, in Graphic Novel #13. You should read it, I think you would enjoy it, as like you suggested ATAC is used in a bit different way - Frank and Joe are back-up, and a new security feature for the mission CDs is introduced.

And another story they could do is Laura and Trudy finding out about ATAC. This would definitely make the series interesting, if they did it right, imagine how Laura would feel finding out that her sons have been endangering their lives with the help of her husband behind her back! I think this could be very interesting, we would see some serious tension between Fenton and Laura, and could ultimately lead to the end of Frank and Joe's career as ATAC agents.

That's more like something they would do in the Casefiles then in the UBs, HBWiki. I mean, can you imagine anything like that happening in the UB series? Thats one of the problems with the series, there is no evolution to it. It's like every book has nothing to do with the one before it! >:( Can you imagine Belinda Conrad or Vijay Petal getting killed off like Iola was? There are never any twists in the UBs that change the overall series at all! It's just the same routine over and over again! ::) >:( It's time they end the series or change it in a way that is exceptable to the fans who are tired of reading the same book again and again! Don't get me wrong, I enjoy most if not all of the UB books, but it's time for a change, and I mean a change for the better!

You are so right, Sam! The series never changes, and that hurts the series.

I think Scott Lobdell would consider it for his series, though, but getting the idea past S&S might be a problem!

I think it would be cool if they could take Vijay on a mission and then he keeps messing up but one of his mistakes helps catch the bad guy or something. If Laura or Aunt Trudy found out about ATAC, it would totally ruin ATAC and the whole series!! I hope they don't do that!! :o
Title: Re: What Would YOU Like to See?

drama, tension, and misunderstanding are all things that make good stories, Laura and Trudy's discovery of ATAC would be all of those. And it's just not realistic at all for them not to - they're both smart women!

By the way, I agree, Vijay Patel should become a field agent.

Actually, I think Laura and Gertrude should be let in on the ATAC secret, since they've got to be wondering just how the Hardy's are getting all the money to pay for all the music CD's, DVD's and Video Games that they're always buying or ordering online (even though they are ATAC discs).  And the excuses that the Hardy's are making now are starting to be pretty lame.
Title: Re: What Would YOU Like to See?

Yes, and notice the authors are even running out of excuses, lately - there hasn't been an ''on screen'' explanation for a while.

Your wish has come true, The Hardy Boys Graphic Novel #15 ''Live Free or Die Hardy'' will take part largely at an ATAC training center.

Good job Papercutz and Scott Lobdell!

I just re-read the plot blurb for ''Live Free or Die Hardy'' and this won't be any training center, apparently this facility is located on the grounds of A.T.A.C. headquarters it's self!

Close enough! First #13, then #15! Maybe I'm channeling them, or vice-versa :D Of course not though, because of the time frame and releases. And #13 was a given, because of the contest.

Actually, I was re-reading everyone's answers and they are quite good.

Sam Spade really had a point about nothing major happening to shake things up (WARD is sort of in there, but w/e).

SDLagent about Laura/Trudy being let in on ATAC. It would be an interesting twist, but I kind of like the idea that they don't know. Actually, if they won't go that direction (which they probably won't), it would be good as one of the last books. Or maybe in a trilogy, who knows. Just a rough idea.

Bigfootman, at least they had one case they stumbled upon in The Opposite Numbers (GN #7), if that counts. And Rocky Road, right? Or was that sort of indirectly assigned? Of course I don't remember much of it :-\

tomswift2002 about all the "lame" excuses...definitely!

JoeHardyRocks about Vijay making a mistake, but then it helps solve the case. I like this idea. Sounds just a smidge like something Chet might do too :)

Now I feel like we're in kindergarden and I'm going around the circle ;D

Actully, Opisite numbers took place on a train to a ATAC mission, and Rocky Road was caused by a false ATAC mission.
Title: Re: What Would YOU Like to See?
Post by: Olivia on August 18, 2008, 07:24:03 PM
Bigfootman - Well, to me it seems like they're both indirectly related. Especially GN #7, because what happened on the train wasn't a case that ATAC sent them. But then they had the case because they were a part of ATAC. So I don't know, I guess I'm getting too technical. Strictly speaking, I guess you're right!

SDLagent - It's still sort of on topic, we were talking about the "corruption" idea and other things *shrugs*
Title: Re: What Would YOU Like to See?

And you have to remember Graphic Novel #1 which made no mention of ATAC, but that book was actually published pre-ATAC so it's not really the same.
Title: Re: What Would YOU Like to See?
Post by: tomswift2002 on August 19, 2008, 08:17:49 AM
You also have to remember that at first, the Graphic Novels were going to be a bridge between the Digest series and the Undercover Brothers series,  but so far, #1 is an oddity in the series. Its sort of like Digests #84 & 85.
Title: Re: What Would YOU Like to See?
Post by: SDLagent on August 19, 2008, 01:03:37 PM
Did they actullay say it was going to be a bridge? I do remeber that they made it sound like Graphic Novel #2 would answer some questions, such as what happend to Iola and Callie, but as we know that never happend. I wonder why...maybe Papercutz came up with the idea but S&S didn't like it? I don't know.

On Friday September 10, 2004, Bob Nelson sent this to the Hardyboys@yahoogroups.com about the comic book line (note: at that time there were still plans to continue, what became the Graphic Novels, as a comic book line past #3):

QuoteI also saw the synopsis for the second comic book in the Hardy Boys Ocean of
Osyria story. Part 2 comes out in December. According to the synopsis, The
Gray Man is in the story. He was the head of the Network in the Casefiles
series. It seems strange that he is in the story, since Iola Morton is also in
the story, yet according to the Casefiles storys, the Hardys met The Gray Man at
Iola's funeral. Interestingly, since it was reported that the comic book
series will bridge the gap from the classic Hardy Boys series to the new Hardy
Boys (Boy Investigators?) series, I wonder if The Gray Man will be featured in
the new books. Only time will tell....=)

That's it for now,

Bob Nelson

Thanks Tom. On the papercutz website it still mentions the Gray Man, in the plot summary for comic book #1.

I noticed that Bob, refered to the UB as Hardy
Boys (Boy Investigators?).
Title: Re: What Would YOU Like to See?
Post by: tomswift2002 on August 19, 2008, 03:00:49 PM
Yeah, there was more to that email, but it was talking about the news of Grosset & Dunlap releasing volumes 59-66 of the Digest series as flashlight books, listing what volumes 1-6 of "the new" Hardy Boys series would be and mentioning that #7, in September 2004, had been given an ISBN,  but no title, and that on the phone, the automatic answering service at S&S had said "The Hardy Boys bi seven".  Apparently the service had been saying "new seven", but then when he called during that week, it was saying "bi", so he was guessing that that might've stood for "Boy Investigators".

One problem, Chet's only been in like 2 UB's while Fenton barely makes an appearance.  In Haunted, Fenton showed up for a few lines of support , and then he emailed advice on the haunted house they were going to.  I had to laugh when I saw that.  This is suppose to be a top-secret investigation that only Fenton and the boys know about, and yet he goes and emails the boys, even though it is well known that to a lot of computer hackers and addicts, even after the message has been deleted someone could still find a trace of the message somewhere in the computer.

What I'd like to see:
-Chet Mortion NOT dissapearing from the books.
-Them solving a case in the books without any help from ATAC. (not the GNs, since they have already done that)
-A book with actual casefile like fight scences (only has happened in Wanted)
-Frank not being dumb around girls.
-WARD appearing in books other then the GNs.
-A book WITHOUT ANY continulaity errors. (Ok, maybe 1 or 2 books have done that, but not too many.

You saying that makes we wonder tooo... I wish I was that close to the 1000 posts club.. Um I have 800 to go. Back when I was making closer to 30 posts a day.. I was doing better to getting towards 1000 but now I am slowing down rapidly. Don't really know why though of course I am starting to make longer posts.

Though, before people on the forum said "That I just post for the sake of getting more on my post count", well I don't its because I enjoy being on the hardy boys forum. I hope that other people feel this way.

On topic, I just want to say that I would like to see a ATAC fans only forum. I am actually working on making one for myself. You can all wait for the link that I will send out. I hope I will be the first though maybe someone will beat me to it...

Yes, an ATAC fans only form is needed, cause the war is getting boring now, and now it consists of fake quotes. Meanwhile, I am waiting for the Crimson Flame to come to libary through Inter-libary loan, so I can review it, wish me luck!

Here's some stuff I'd like to see:
1. No more  "mini-series"
2. The Hardy's finding cases on there own without whining about gadgets, or the case magicly turning out to be ATAC related.
3. More fist-fights and gang violence.
4. ATAC cases that are something better then sabbotoge at a theme park. Come on! They are a secret agency, give the Hardy's some good cases!

They're only teenagers, and ATAC is an agency that sends teens to investigate places where teens would fit in more. At an amusement park, teenagers would blend in better than an adult asking people questions.

Somehow I doubt that on a reality TV show an adult detective would stand-out as much as a teenager?

But also, think about, with the hot dog eating competition, if it's involved with the Super Bowl, do you really think that it is just going to be open to kids and teens, or would it be open to people of all ages.  Plus some of the areas that the Hardy's go would probably have age restrictions, just like the couple of Casinoes that the boys have been in.

But I would say that in the Casefiles it would be more plausible for the boys to be able to pull off early 20 year olds, but in the UB's, just the way the boys act, that is completely thrown out the window, so I don't believe that the Hardy's could've actually behaved enough in the Double Trouble trilogy to make people think that they were actually above the legal age to gamble.  Or be in a place that allows gambling and the serving of alcohol.

So people under 18 shouldn't be able to go into restaurants? They serve alcohal. :P

Going off the theme park point: as if the park couldn?t hire some undercover security. If they need young people to blend in, get someone fresh off of cop school. It?s a good enough assignment to be a learning experience for them, but not dangerous enough (like an international crime syndicate - which would be out of their jurisdiction, anyway) for someone?s first real case.

Although, I still get the point about "teens blending in".

But anyways, I don?t even remember what the big deal was about that case. Someone stealing cotton candy or something? ATAC should prioritize.

My random idea: why don't they have the Hardys go through some files and pick a case that they're interested in. I mean, I suppose that doesn't do much because it would just be a plot point...but whatever.

He doesn't, there is good evidence that Bigfoot may be real, or fake. Until people start looking for real, no one with ever know.

What proof do you have that it isn't real? I'm pretty sure you know nothing about it JHR, so until you do some research...

Don't get me, wrong I don't believe in Sasquatch either, but that doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

Anyway, lets back on topic people.

I'm with you - guilty until proven innocent lol. I mean, non-existent until proven existent.

Okay, kidding on that (sort of).

My only comment on this, people - don't worry.
