I voted for "They should write another series" because this one stinks.

Personally, I don't really have much of an opinion at all when it comes to the UBs.

I voted for a rewrite, I don't like the first person narrative.  :P

I don't really care much for UB. They should write a different series. That's my vote.  :)

I put just okay. Of course I wouldn't mind a rewrite though. It seems like they are improving and then other times it's like they are taking two steps back.

Yesterday I was rereading part of Leslie McFarlane's autobiography, Ghost Of The Hardy Boys http://hardyboys.wikia.com/wiki/Ghost_of_the_Hardy_Boys (http://hardyboys.wikia.com/wiki/Ghost_of_the_Hardy_Boys), McFarlane mentioned that it took him only three weeks to write one of the early Hardy Boys stories, with an average of 210 pages and 23-24 chapters.  When you compare those books that contain all sorts of spelling and grammatical errors, next to the books that are being put out now, the Hardy Boys Undercover Brothers series pales in comparison.  And we're guessing that it only takes the authors maybe two or three weeks to write the books, plus add another couple of weeks of editing and revision writing, and you end up a lot of times with books that are not even worth the price that you paid for them.  I started #18 Pushed back when it first came out in September/October 2007, and I dropped it after I had read almost 6 chapters and I haven't picked the book up since, and yet I've read the three books after it.

If I was given the option of picking between the two most recent stand-alone Hardy Boys volumes 18, A Killing In The Market (1988) and Pushed (2007), I would take A Killing In The Market over Pushed.

Most of the books are pretty good. Some are stupid, but overall I think they're pretty good.

I voted for ''they should write a new series'', because while I don't mind the series, I know how much better the Hardys can be (even the Graphic Novels are better, these days).

On the other hand it probably wouldn?t be the best idea to start a whole new series, maybe just a revamp.

In a perfect world cut back on ATAC, but if S&S didn't want to cut back on ATAC, then take it another direction. Maybe make like MI6 in the Alex Rider series, because I wouldn't mind ATAC that much, if it meant that Frank and Joe could go up against big organizations. What?s with the one man shows ATAC always has the boys investigate? Please that?s see some GANGS, as in a group of more then one or two people! It would be great if they brought WARD into the series, but I don't think they will, since it is Scott Lobell's creation.

I agree with the gangs.  In the UB's it seems that the Hardy's are always battling one man shows who only want to murder other contestants or kill for some other reason. I mean, reading a murder mystery can be great but in the UB's S&S is just beating the murder story to death.  Will they ever stop flailing a dead horse?  Even the new trilogy appears to be 3 different murder crimes committed by 3 different people and are connected by another overused plot: they all take place on the set of a reality TV show.

What the UB's need is a group like the Assassin's from the Casefiles, and even then, gangs that are not even connected to the Assassin's (WARD) or The Network (ATAC), but are stand-alone and last for 3 volumes like the Phoenix gang did.  And each book was about a different crime Phoenix was involved in - Poaching and animal smuggling (#1), environmental crimes and weapon smuggling (#2), people smuggling and slavery (#3).  Sure smuggling was the main crime, but there were also crimes that were minor plots in the books: attempted murder, murder, break and entry, terrorism, molotov cocktail explosions, etc.

You both have very good points. They are overdoing the whole murder mystery aspect.

I think that the UB series is awesome!! I love the updated version and the first person narrative style. I think they should keep the series just the way it is.

Most people were grateful when the Casefiles had bit the dust, since for the first 66 books the series was actually a completely different series, and then, either because the editors thought the series would continue on its own momentum, or they just didn't care, 67-127 essentially became The Hardy Boys Mystery (Digest) Stories Series 2, although there were a few books, like #80 Dead of Night that were done in the early-Casefiles style.

There were also some earlier ones that were more like digests than casefiles. Like the one with the Formula-1 racing cars. What is that one?

You know, I can't even read what that says. So I'll just ignore that, whatever it was.

Funny, since you are the one that wrote it and started it.

It says "Undercover Brothers Suck". And JoeHardyRocks, calling someone else what you distinctly are yourself is kinda weird ;) Plus, it's not really an insult because it's just calling it as you see it...

***

So I think we can define success on different levels (I'm just numbering these, but not in a specific order of importance per say).

Success #1: Continuing to release new books.
Success #2: Making a profit.
Success #3: Being ranked high on a best-selling list.
Success #4: Most HBs fans happy about the books.
Success #5: One individual fan happy about the books (i.e. I would call it a success because I like it).
Success #6: Having believability in the series (including continuity, some realism, etc).
Success #7: Being true to previous HBs series on some level.
Success #8: Dialogue between fans and $&$ to feature some of what they want, and for everyone to benefit this way.

So, what "success" does this series fall under? I think mostly success #5 which can be considered pretty mild.

I'm not saying that no one likes them, just making some observations. Anyways, I probably like things that aren't exactly "successful". But if you want to see it as successful...well...no one can stop you. Except maybe the Hardys in the flesh.

Are you sure the games in the UB universe?  Does it actually mention ATAC anywhere?  Or is the game just an Alternate Universe game with no mention of government affiliations?

Hopefully the people at Dreamcatcher will have made it an actual mystery with an actual gang behind it.  But considering all ATAC criminals seem to be one man gangs...its a stretch.

I said in the THT Ships to Retail topic it was basicaly an AU Tower Treasure and there was no gang in the Tower Treasure. But so far it is a great story. Only flaw is its so new that its not on Uneversal Hints System and the solutions guide is not yet avadle. Must finish ch. 2 today!

While that is true, in The Tower Treasure you had Hurd Applegate accusing Mr. Robinson of being in league with Jackley, and then at the end, the Hardys had to battle a local bunch of tramps from getting the stolen loot.

In the revised there was the one who locked them in and then went to get his other buddies.  And while the boys didn't fight the hobo's, the hobo's did lock them into the old water tower and the boys had to bust out of the tower.

Theres a PSP for you..
Just cause I thought I'd mention it, Robin was trying to agree with something someone had said. Saying you agree, is a reasonable statement. The way he said it maybe not right, but still, there was a purpose to his post. Whereas telling people what the post is pointless, while I think that would be pointless.
Back on topic, so I don't make this a PSP, Undercover Brothers, was succesfull!
