Title: It seems like a lot of the Hardy Boys Casefiles . . .
Post by: Hardy Boys UB Fan on May 30, 2011, 03:45:46 PM
Before 1991, I think, are dealing with the USSR & KGB, (I don't know what they are called now)

Some books that I see this in are:

1. Too Many Traitors.  HB Casefiles, No. 14

When Frank wins an all-expense-paid vacation to Spain's Costa del Sol, the brother detectives are set for some good times in the sunny paradise. But instead of flamenco music and bullfights, Frank and Joe find themselves running from the law.

It seems their official tour guide has been murdered, and the evidence points directly at them. To make things worse, the Hardys are also being    hunted as spies by the KGB -- and as traitors by the Network. Trapped in very tight spots, Frank and Joe need every ounce of daring and skill...to keep from being shipped home in matching boxes.

2.  The Borderline Case. HB Casefiles, No. 25

A student exchange program brings Frank and Joe to sun-kissed  Greece. But the moment they hit the scenic port of Piraeus, they land  in deep trouble. What starts as a street fight soon escalates to a hornet's nest of espionage, kidnapping, and diplomatic double cross.

Near Yugoslavia, the Hardys find themselves on a mission to rescue someone they don't know, for a cause they barely understand. Only one thing is certain -- if the brother team fails this border run, they'll be ancient history.

3.  Strategic Moves.  HB Casefiles, No. 43

While attending an international summer school at England's  Oxford   University, the Hardys learn just how much times have changed.  Frank's   roommate, Pyotr Zigonev, is the USSR Junior chess champ, and he  had   become a pawn in an international power play. But just as the boys rally to Zigonev, they discover that the CIA has joined forces with the KGB.

The American and Soviet spy masters are out to foil a master of terrorism, and Frank and Joe and Zigonev are caught in the middle. One false move and they'll lose the ultimate game -- a danger-packed contest played out in the cold gray shadows of Stonehenge.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this? This was just something I noticed.

You have to remember that it was only in 1989 when the Iron Curtain and the Cold War more or less came to an end with the fall of the Berlin Wall.  So back then it was natural for "spy" movies and novels to have the Soviet Union and the KGB be the bad guys, or be figured into the "evil" scheme in some way.  Plus, considering that back in the 80's and very early 90's (the Soviet Union dissolved in 1991) the USSR was the second most powerful country in the world, after the United States, and was seen as a threat to democratic government in the Western world, most authors and script writers placed the USSR in the position of not being trustworthy.

Well, the USSR and KGB made for an easy villian in the late 1980s as America was still embroiled in The Cold War at that time. But with the fall of the Berlin Wall on November 9, 1989 and the dissolution of the USSR in 1991, it wasn't really a viable target to use anymore. But the KGB is still around in Russia- that hasn't gone away.
And all three of those are some of my favorites of The Hardy Boys Casefiles- particularly Too Many Traitors- I've read and reread that one quite a few times. I like those international intrigue/foreign countries/secret spies type books. :)

Plus in the early ads for the Hardy Boys Casefiles, Simon & Schuster was trying to say that the "NEW" series mixed together elements of James Bond and Indiana Jones, so, considering that the James Bond movies had had the Soviets and the KGB in them as enemies and friends that you had to keep at arms length, you can see where the Hardy Boys Casefiles were drawing some of their plot points from.

He was just agreeing with you and pointing out that even the ads for the series mentioned a James Bond influence.

And what are you saying "why don't you?" about?

My post didn't mention the cold war. I did mention the KGB and USSR. They were mentioned on the back covers of the books. The collapse of the USSR was before my time. So, I don't remember those events.

Okay- officially the KGB dissolved along with the USSR back in 1991, but I have heard tales of KGB factions still operating. I shouldn't have definitively said they were still around- but I would not be surprised honestly. Kinda like how there are still KKK factions around too, sadly enough.

I would think you would learn about it in history class soon enough- it's been around since at least the end of the Civil War- I'm pretty sure that's when it was founded and some strains of it continue on today... it's even mentioned as the villian in a Sherlock Holmes story- The Five Orange Pips

I'm not sure that it's meant as a reference to that or not. I'd have to see the show.
And whether homeschooled or not, any American history class should teach something about the KKK in conjunction with a study on the Civil War and the Reconstruction period.

Depends on what classes you have to take (I'm talking the college equivalent here- taking summer courses to speed your graduation or literally make the grade for scholarships- though either way, I'd still rather not be in school during summer.) Depends on what classes you have to take (I'm talking the college equivalent here- taking summer courses to speed your graduation or literally make the grade for scholarships- though either way, I'd still rather not be in school during summer.) So yeah- summer school is no fun, but Summer School is pretty fun (when edited). ;D 8)

I've never had to do summer school, but it might happen. :-\

You're homeschooled? That's so weird! :P ;D
(Totally kidding).
Though I'm not homeschooled myself (at least in that sense), I do have friends who have been homeschooled. I never understand why some find this weird or whatever. Just because a family chooses to do education a bit differently from others doesn't mean it's weird. I can understand why some parents would want to be protective of exactly what their kids learn in schools today- I don't blame them. I don't really have anything against public school either- but I can see how things have continued to get worse in a lot of ways. And it may not even be an issue with the curriculum- some parents may just feel safer, considering the violence that has happened at public schools.
And from my understanding, many homeschooled kids in an area generally get together and have times of interaction and even hold their own senior proms. So I think homeschooled kids still get interaction with kids their own age in a school-setting. Of course, they can also get this through social groups at the local public library, sports teams, local clubs and groups and of course, church.
However, I was very much homeschooled as a kid in Bible instruction and learning more about God. My parents not only told me about Jesus and what He said- they lived out what He said as best as they could. (And they still do this now of course.) That kind of homeschooling, every kid should have. :)
(And yeah- I know that was way off-topic- but to be fair, I didn't take the conversation in this direction to begin with. ;))

You're not familiar with SKOOL? It's only the precursor to both The Network and ATAC, that's all. ;D
I'm being somewhat facetious, but nonetheless, I really did enjoy their appearance in the obviously The Man From U.N.C.L.E., Get Smart, Danger Man, and James Bond, etc.-inspired Hardy Boys book The Secret Agent on Flight 101. You should give it a read. And read about the great war between SKOOL and UGLI. :D 8)

In an attempt to bring this thread back on topic and as a point of comparison, I was just wondering... in the late 1980s and through the '90s, we had the KGB showing up at times as the bad guys in The Hardy Boys Casefiles, which as has been pointed out, would be appropriate choices at the time with the Cold War going on still and all. But the Cold War really was going since the 1950s honestly. The original Hardy Boys books started in 1927, so I was just wondering. Does anyone know if any of the original text books may have had The Hardy Boys fighting against Nazi agents? (As it seems they would have been the natural fall guy at that time- from the '30s through the '40s in any case.) There is kind of a parallel to the Indiana Jones movies here because Indy goes from fighting Nazis in the '30s to fighting Soviets in the '50s as well. Both groups make for logical bad guy choices for their time periods on a global scale- and The Hardys have definitely fought criminals on a global scale throughout their history.

In the original ads for The Hardy Boys Casefiles, the books are described as a mix of Indiana Jones and James Bond :) 8)
(which is pretty fitting since James Bond is Indiana Jones' father- in more ways than one. ;))

Not that I can think of but I'm sure there was at least some references to the Nazis. I do, however, remember some Japanese villains working for "foreign powers".
