Who do you think is a better couple,Joe and Iola or Joe and Vanessa ??? I think Joe and Vanessa are the better couple but thats just my opinion.
I haven?t read any with Vanessa so I can?t riley say, but I think Joe and Iola are pretty good.
Also I would have liked to see whet Joe and Iola relationship would have been like in the Casefiles, because the boys have a more serious relationship with there girlfriends in CFs. Since Joe/ Iola never appeared in the CFs its kind of hard to compare Joe/Iola to Joe/ Vanessa.
To be honest, I liked Joe/{insert casefile-guest-appearance girl here} better than either.
It was better for story development to have one of the boys not be attached. And Iola became a pretty quick choice to be the one that was done away with. This helped Joe's character stand out even more from Frank's. I was never very happy with the emergence of a new girl for Joe, but Vanessa's character was unique (at least at first).
The Casefiles were the first HB books I read, so when I read Dead on Target, I just never saw Iola as being the love of Joe's life! True she was his first love but the way the book read I just never felt that he cared for her all that much. I just recently started reading the Digests and in those he does seem to care but it seems like he cares for her more as a "good friend" than anything else.
I would have to say that I prefer Joe/Vanessa.

I agree.
I read a few of the digests too and your right Joe and Iola didn't seem as close as Joe and vanessa, thats why I think Joe and Vanessa are the better couple.
I've read all the Casefiles, and I must say that at the beginning of the series, the whole Iola being dead arc, gave Joe a different look on life. Plus, it gave Joe that drive that he needed to drive the series. But, as the series progressed, I think S&S wanted to heal a little bit, and get a steady girlfriend. I loved the fight between Iola 4 and Vanessa at the end of Dead Of Night.
I DONT like Vanessa. IDK why. Joe was ok with Iola and with anyone else i just dont liek Vanessa.
Joe always felt better with Iola but I think he got over it when he took on Vanessa. Personally, I like him with Vanessa.

;D What a different perspective! I never thought of how much Joe's character grew from his girlfriend's death to the
many girl guest appearances. On the other hand, I kept thinking -that Hardy Boy needs a girlfriend (that doesn't turn out to be the bad guy at the end of the book)...
I'll say. He's got a new girlfriend in like every book
Joe even chases after Sandy Swift in Time Bomb (HB/TS Ultra Thriller).
And what annoys me is, every book with a new girlfriend mentions either Iola, a car bomb or terrorists.
Yeah, and it seems like every time Frank starts to like someone else, she's evil. But, On topic, it's hard to chose becuase you never really saw Iola and Joe in the casefiles.
I don't think I've read any actual Casefiles book with Vanessa yet.
Vanessa enters the series in book #69 Mayhem In Motion.

They were a great pair in the originals, though

Vanessa Bender, she's Joe's girlfriend in the casefiles.

She was in the orginals, but they kinda wrote her out of the casefiles.I won't come right out and say what happened in the books, so as not to spoil it. ;)
But she was only in the very first casefile book, but after that she wasn't in htem anymore.
You don't have to do much research to find out what happened to Iola, it's even in the Network Database of this site!
I already know what happened to her. Was it in Dead on Target?
Then why did you ask? ::)

I loved the fight between Iola 4 and Vanessa at the end of Dead Of Night.
Were there 4 Iola clones? I know there was one in #4 but when were the other two? (besides DON)
In the Casefiles, that Assassins loved to torment Joe with Iola. Whenever Joe was up against the Assassins, the Assassins would always tell him that they were going to get some else he liked the same way they got Iola, and he would always ask why and where she was. And I remember they made a couple of copies of her. In Dead Of Night, that would've been Iola3 at least.
Ok, thanks
I haven't read enough Casefiles, but I have to say that I have a bias for Iola. I do like the edge her absence gave the series (as some of you has mentioned), so in my world they end up together in the end when they're old and the HBs are not on as many intense cases lol. Half-kidding.
I'll just have to see about Vanessa. Maybe she just worked better in the Casefiles, but imagine her in the Originals or Digests. Again, I can't picture it because I don't really know this character.
I've read about 6 casefiles, and one I did read had Vanessa playing one of the biggest roles. In book 102 WRONG SIDE OF the law she plays a huge role.. Here is a little excerpt:
"Vanessa Bender, Joe's girlfriend, was practically a profressional at creating computer graph-ics, and she worked out of her mother's animation studio.
Joe nodded, "I guess since she talked to you, she's changed her plans a little. She's going to volunteer with a teen program in town. It's called Hands to Help."
"Oh?" Callie Said. I've heard of them. They work with delinquents, right?"" (COPYRIGHT OF SIMON AND SCHUSTER)
I never read any with Venessa but I still say Iola is better! 8)
Well, at least you've seen an excerpt!

That doesn't make any sense.
Well, some people think that the only thing that they know is better without knowing the other part. Llike thinking Iola is better because she's the only one that he knows.
Other times, you just know ;)
Sometimes you can have a realistic view even if you know little. Or maybe not realistic, but you know enough so you're just like, "whatev".
Yeah, like if you know just a little bit about Vannessa, and alot about Iola, some people just decide whom they like better just by their little glimpses.

To reply to all of this...
The explanations you all give are kind of like, if I was only exposed to UB's, I would say they were better then the casefiles, because I think the UB's are the best you can get, but if I only read casefiles and never read UB's it would be the same way.
So hope that explains the Iola/vannessa fave thing!
Well, in Casefiles #80 Dead Of Night there is a fight between Iola and Vanessa, followed by a fight between Vanessa.
followed by a fight between vanessa.
Whats supposed to be there? and??? ???
between Vanessa-s, as in two Vanessas
Really, there was another vanessa in the series?
hmm, what did I just say? Seems to me that would imply more than one Vanessa

Iola.Alive, should start a Iola is the best character in the world club!
She did. It's called Iola's Inner Circle. So far, I'm proud member #2, JHR is #3 and Olivia (Iola.Alive) is number 1.
I've been on the thing. I was just saying she should retitle it!
I don't know if she's "the best character in the world". Anyways, I like the title. If someone within the inner circle wants it changed, we'll have a discussion.
Otherwise, I thought it was pretty original *shrugs*

I agree with Olivia, Bones. (are you gonna freak if I call you that? I'm not sure what the rules of that are yet ::))
This forum is supposed to be fun, so as long as you're not being

I was saying that I agree. What I meant was I think that it is bad to always make useless posts. Like if everytime that you post you never make a valid point about something, then maybe you need to think a little bit more before posting your stuff.
Good point Bones. You may want to try to follow your own advice sometimes

He didn't say he didn't make mistakes, he was just saying that NZone's posts aren't always perfect because he acts like they are.
I was referring to the not pointless and idiotic thing. And I don't use punctuation necessarily, especially if a period is not needed because it's the end of a post

If you like
Virtual Villainy because of the action points, then you should read the
Operation: Phoenix trilogy, since that story contains so many "action parts instead of boring plotting"., like Frank and Joe finding a cache of weapons with enough firepower to overthrow the United States.

Back in the late 90's before I found 1 & 3 for my own collection, I was only able to read #2 & #3 the most since I had a copy of #65, while the local library had a copy of #65 and #66. Plus I had read #64 in the past, and eventually I did get the library to get #64 in on Inter-library loan (I think it came from a library in Oshawa, or somewhere in Southern Ontario) and I was able to read the trilogy from start to finish.
But I agree, the ending to #64
Endangered Species is probably one of the best endings to any Hardy Boys story ever, with Frank and Joe vowing to get revenge. Plus, the opening scene in the next book where Joe 'flies off the handle' and Frank doesn't stop him like he usually does, and then tells Joe that there are no rules this time.
Quote
"You know, big brother," [Joe] said, "you did something earlier that surprised me."
"What was that?" Frank asked.
"When I flew off the handle back at the police station and tried to clobber Jellicoe," Joe said, "you didn?t try to stop me, as you usually do. You didn?t tell me that I had to play by the rules."
"Rules?" said Frank, his eyes taking on an intensity Joe had never seen before, an intensity that sent chills down Joe?s spine. "What rules? These guys killed our father. This time there are no rules."
