Title: Brotherly moments
Post by: Mrs. Nick Jonas on February 28, 2011, 01:44:51 AM
I was wondering if there are any sweet brotherly moments/brotherly love between Frank (https://www.hardyboyscasefiles.com/encyclopedia.php?entry_id=1) & Joe (https://www.hardyboyscasefiles.com/encyclopedia.php?entry_id=2) in any of the books. If you know of any, could you please tell me about it and which book its from?

A lot of the Casefiles and Digests typically have an ending scene with Frank and Joe playing around- chasing each other for some reason or giving each other a light punch in the arm, etc. Those would count I would think. Dead in the Water (https://www.hardyboyscasefiles.com/series/casefiles.php?book_no=127) particularly comes to mind with its ending scene.
I think Brother Against Brother (https://www.hardyboyscasefiles.com/series/casefiles.php?book_no=11) would be another great choice for this of course. And I'm sure there are others still. Maybe I can think of some more later.

Most "brotherly" moments are right after one of them is about to die.

From any series? Or were you meaning just from the Casefiles, or just from the UB's? Anyway, theres one in Frame Up (https://www.hardyboyscasefiles.com/series/casefiles.php?book_no=99), Joe falls off a trolley car (gets pushed off is more accurate) and Frank is very concerned.... In Training for Trouble (https://www.hardyboyscasefiles.com/series/originals.php?book_no=161), When Joe gets stabbed, Frank gets concerned also..... In Trouble in Paradise when they're about to jump off the ship to their deaths, they have a nice brother moment....And in the first Lost Mystery Trilogy book, Frank gets tased and Joe gets pretty angry... Dead of Night (https://www.hardyboyscasefiles.com/series/casefiles.php?book_no=80) and The Genius Thieves (https://www.hardyboyscasefiles.com/series/casefiles.php?book_no=9), when Joe goes psycho, Frank is scared for him and that's pretty adorable.... In Danger Overseas (https://www.hardyboyscasefiles.com/series/girldetective.php?book_no=2), when Frank thinks Joe got hurt when he won't answer his phone, he stays up pretty much all night worrying about him.... I'll probably think of a bunch more later. :D

BTW This is a great topic!

I think #11 in the Casefiles still has to be tops. Frank's concern for Joe is unmistakeable in Brother Against Brother (https://www.hardyboyscasefiles.com/series/casefiles.php?book_no=11)- there are a number of emotionally strong brotherly moments there.
Also, in Blood Sport (https://www.hardyboyscasefiles.com/series/casefiles.php?book_no=117), Joe is concerned for Frank when he goes missing and he goes after him to track him down.
And Thick as Thieves (https://www.hardyboyscasefiles.com/series/casefiles.php?book_no=29) has both Frank and Joe thinking the other is dead so there are definitely some strong emotions running there as well.
How about in The Vanishing Thieves (https://www.hardyboyscasefiles.com/series/originals.php?book_no=66) when Joe falls overboard from a ship with his arms and feet tied together to an anchor? Frank definitely had some concern going on there. (Thankfully Joe had managed to grab some wirecutters before he went overboard. ;))
And you can't forget Dead on Target (https://www.hardyboyscasefiles.com/series/casefiles.php?book_no=1), which certainly had some strong brotherly moments with Frank having to restrain Joe from getting himself killed trying to rescue Iola (https://www.hardyboyscasefiles.com/encyclopedia.php?entry_id=12) and just helping comfort Joe in general.

Those are great picks.  ;D 8)

And in Deathgame, when Joe thinks that Frank is dead, he can't focus, and then when Joe keeps getting slapped, Frank begs their captor to stop, and it's very brotherly concerning. And in that same book, Joe pretends to fall off the rock wall, Frank really thinks he's falling. In Crawling With Zombies, Frank is worried and says "You hear that Joe? I'm counting on you not getting yourself killed first." Murder House, when Frank is in love with Brynn, and Joe helps him let her go. In The Lazarus Plot, they are totally worried about each other all the time. Kidnapped at the Casino, Frank is worried when Joe is kidnapped at the end. LOL I'll have to look through some of my books, but I'll definetly be thinking of a bunch more! :D

I'm loving these examples and I REALLY love BAB. That one has some great ones. Mostly from Frank obviously being worried about Joe.

Also in DoT when Frank literally has to restrain Joe from killing himself. But is being worried like that or concerned the same as the original question asks about brotherly moments?

Sure that shows that they care, but it's not between both of them. Even in BAB, it's biggest criticism (from some board members) is that when Joe finally realizes who Frank is they don't really hug or have much of a "moment". I still like the ending and always defend it by saying that they really didn't have time for it because of what was going on.

Frankly (haha) I find it hard to think of true moments between both boys at the same time in the canons. Thick as Thieves is one of my faves and definitely has the element of brotherly love at least. Frank has to avenge Joe's death and Joe sees Frank get shot into the river. So they both think the other one is gone. Thus, the plot revolves around them finding justice for their dearly departed brother. I might have to read that one tonight. I LOVE it! :)

I can recall more from fanfic because this seems to be something they explore more in the AU of the Hardy Boys.

I'm just wondering here if we're all talking about the same thing. Joking/funny moments? Or serious "you almost died" moments? Or both?

I like this topic too :)

WOW- I'm loving all of these responses!

Yes, any series is awesome as long as it has the Hardy Boys!

I'd say that being worried/concerned is totally a brotherly moment!

Joking/funny moments & "you almost died" are totally perfect!

It looks like I'll have to try to buy some more Casefiles from Amazon! Looks awesome! I wish that I had enough money to buy ALL of the HB books that were ever made!

I also really like it in Boardwalk Bust when Joe tells Frank this when he thinks that they might be killed: "I just want to say, Frank, that it's been awesome having you for a brother." & in Blown Away when Frank wishes that he had hit the bad dudes harder when he sees his brother in pain.

In Operation: Survival Frank freaks out a bit when he finds out that he has to be a part of a group who want to "Teach Joe a lesson".

I know that those weren't huge brotherly moments but they are still moments that show that they really care about each other. =D

AWW! I loved those too!

I'll have to reread some, I know theres more!

In Endangered Species, Frank and Joe are walking through the desert, and Frank keeps telling them to kep walking, but when Joe says he can't, Frank helps him. Then later, when Frank passes out, Joe is pretty concerned. When Frank is almost attacked by a snake, Joe gets angry, and when Joe almost gets hanged (hung?) Frank is super worried.....

I'm going to read some UB's tonight to find some more. ;D

edit: I added some more moments.

The Hardy Boys Survival Handbook is also great for this, particularly in the story where Joe saves Frank from hypothermia and the story where Frank rescues Joe after he gets stranded in the wilderness.

Also, right at the beginning of No Mercy Frank and Joe share an especially deep brotherly moment when they are witnessing the aftershocks of Endangered Species.

What do you mean? Overly brotherly/emotional moments? I suppose there may be some of those, but I think the writers keep it pretty balanced most of the time.

There are alot of bortherly moments in the Operation Phoenix Trilogy........ And stupid? Stupid as in fake-sounding, or over-the-top emotional? ???

Well, sometimes they have to take calculated risks. (When Frank has a chance to have some input.) Other times Joe just goes off and takes crazy risks! But thankfully, it all usually works out well. :)

This must be from an UB book...because they are MUCH smarter, more careful, and more mature in the Casefiles, Digests, and even bluespines.

And I forget who mentioned getting more Casefiles...but YES you definitely need to check out some Casefiles. If you need suggestions on what to read/buy first...we can help you with that. :)

When the boys are returning from the SuperCollider, Frank mentions to Tom how recently the boys had thought that they had lost Fenton Hardy in an explosion.  And from what I've been able to tell from the story, even in the last chapter where we are told that the Casefiles universe will continue in another universe that breaks off from the one that was destroyed, Tom's experiment on the hill occurs within only about a month or two of the Operation Phoenix trilogy.
