Title: Cave Trap: Why is it so bad?
Post by: Bigfootman on September 05, 2008, 06:16:11 PM
I've herd a lot of bad stuff about cave trap but no one has said why it's so bad, I don't mind if you give away details, I can't find it anyways.

Essentially the Hardys go into a cave and have a hard way finding their way out while some treasure hunter is trying to kill them by boring them to death.

For me, Survival of The Fittest is tied with Cave Trap as the worst book in the series.

The Hardys basically have to survive in the middle of the Utah desert when they get stranded and spend most of the book just walking around.

Perosnly the main I had with Cave Trap was it chages cases from sabotoge to ancent buryal grounds. Survival Of the Fittest was a mess.

Well, I had no idea that this was so bad. Is one of 8 new casefiles that I'm currently going through-worst for last I guess.

I started to re-read Cave Trap about 3-4 weeks ago...and after getting to about Chapter 5 I haven't picked it up since.  And in that time I've managed to read the novelization for Star Trek (2009) and half of Star Trek Voyager: Unworthy.  I'm just finding that Cave Trap has no action and really has no direction.

I think the athor was trying to coppy the style of the earler Casefiles. That's why it had so much action.

Action???  What action????  So far the most action has been Frank washing a rope!

Oh, just the scene where Frank gets caught in a whrilpool, the Hardy's being shot at, the last few chapters in the book which had several action scenes, and the part with the booby trap. The book's action does not come until the second half, it's like the editor nataced that the book was boring and forced the athor to add some action scenes.

The problem isn't that it has no action, as it does, it's that you already know who the bad guy is, so it's no surprize when the bad guy is revealed.

That means the last few chapters consist of Frank and Joe running around while the bad guy is randomly putting guns everywhere.
The athor also added a mention to a hit and run, but we don't know if the case was solved, because it's never mentioned again!

I can't help but wonder if the book was really writen by just one person, because the first half and second half really have no connection, it's like two person people wrote each half. First it's about the eviroment, then it's about burial sites and oil. Also, for crying out loud, the writer(s?) builds up so much suspence near the the end, then has the bad guy kill himself!

(hightlight to read the last sentance fully)

I didn't think Cave Trap was all that bad. It was a quick read for me...and my Frank was in trouble! Although I will also say that I have a hard time not liking any of the books. My main criteria for enjoyment is simple...Frank and Joe. :)

It just didn't work at all. Not too awful, but very close.
