Title: The boys in pop culture
Post by: SDLagent on December 07, 2009, 11:15:39 PM
Over on The Hardy Boys Wiki, I'm working on an article (http://hardyboys.wikia.com/wiki/The_Hardy_Boys_in_popular_culture) about The Hardy Boys appearances in pop culture, and I need some help. What I'm looking for are any references to the Hardys in TV, comics, or books. For example, in the last episode of Supernatural, "Abandon All Hope...", a demon mockingly refers to the Winchesters as "the Hardy boys". Have you come across any other references like this?

I like this idea! I think I already told you about the Supernatural Christmas special where they are referred to as the Hardy Boys as well. Hmm...I'll get back to you on this. I'd love to help. :)

I seem to recall that in That 70's Show on the bookshelf in one of the character's bedroom's or living rooms you could see the blue and yellow spines of the Grosset & Dunlap Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew books from the 60's and 70's.

In one supernatural episode there was a parody of the opening to The Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew Mysteries.

I saw that the Wiki has been updated! :) I know you can edit it or whatever but I was afraid of ruining it somehow...so I thought I would let you add it if you wanted.

In Season 3's A Very Supernatural Christmas, the Winchesters are in search of the Anti-Santa Claus. However, they soon find themselves at the mercy of two Pagan Gods posing as a nice normal suburban couple.

The male Pagan God says, ?Hardy Boys here make five,? when referring to how many "tributes" they took for the year as sacrifices.

There was Nancy Drew reference in Heroes this past Monday. Claire gets called Nancy Drew because she's spying on Samuel. I know it's not HBs but in the same realm at least.

The Hardy Boys have also been parodied in a sketch on "Muppets Tonight". In the Heather Locklear episode (Second Season, airing September 21, 1997), there was a sketch called "The Hardy Pig Boys in "The Mystery of the Zombie Queen of the Amazon Outer Space Jungle Bee-Woman Case (based on a novel by Jane Austen)"

Back in the early 90's I remember reading a magazine, which I think was published by Focus On The Family, where there was a parody story called "The Hardly Boys" where the author took the concept of the Hardy Boys series and kept most of the characters but changed their names enough (ie. Chet Morton=Chet Mountain) to make it a parody about how the boys never seem to be in life-threatening danger in the Hardy Boys series, but in this story someone was sending them warnings saying that they were going to die.  And, because it was a Christian magazine, the end had a moral about how we've all inheirited our sinful nature from our parent's because of Adam and Eve's disobedience and God's decision to have us live for only so long on this earth before we die.

Yes! I read that too. But I'm pretty mad because one of my family members lost that edition and I really wanted to keep it!!! >:(  And that was the Clubhouse magazine.

Cool! I remember Clubhouse- that's good stuff. I used to get the Breakaway magazine too. That's also a neat concept to illustrate the fall of man and the need for Christ's forgiveness.  :)

The Dresden Files mentions the Hardys. Police Officer Murphy says "OK so you're Nancy Drew. Which Hardy are you?" Episode 9 The Other Dick She was asking Harry Dresden who is a wizard and private investigator. The show is based on the novels by Jim Butcher.

Also, the new series on Toon Network, Unnatural History was described as a cross between the Hardy Boys and Indiana Jones. This was during a promo commercial. This show can be watched on Sunday nights.

ALF had a few funny moments in this, but for the most part- I think it's only worth having on DVD for the big time ALF completists- I wouldn't mind it as an extra on one of the season DVDs and I am glad I finally got to see it- but I'm sure it would be fairly tricky to get it to DVD- though I would imagine all the shows there would still be owned by NBC. I actually wouldn't have minded having ALF's appearance on Blossom included as an extra- that's a great and funny appearance for ALF. (If you're interested, just look for "The Geek" episode on Youtube.)

NBC probably owns a few of the shows, but just like Alf, other companies own the different shows.

On Married With Children, Al, Bud and Kelly find Peggy unconscious on the floor. Bud and Kelly piece together the clues. They see that Peggy fell and hit her head. Al says, "Listen Nancy Drool and Hardly Boy. It's impossible for your mother to fall down because she'd have to get up."

Title: Re: The boys in pop culture

Well, in the Married...with Children episode, Al was putting down Bud and Kelly more so than The Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew.
And since SDLAgent mentioned "Party Boys"- for the longest time, I thought The Bangles' Walk Like An Egyptian mentioned The Hardy Boys toward the end of the song until I realized that the lyrics were "The party boys call the Kremlin".
You can see my misheard lyrics in my little quote thing on my profile. ;D

Party boys doesn't have a direct link to Hardy Boys. Hard-LY boys is way too close for it not to be about Hardy Boys. Al might not have been put thing them down, but it's been usually a way to put them down in other things as well.

Just ran across this (http://www.time.com/time/specials/packages/article/0,28804,2061324_2061327_2061334,00.html) from TIME Magazine, listing their Top 10 kids' book series that they treasure from their youth and would like to see have a resurgence. I was pleased to see a great British series make it to the list- Biggles. (Though it would have been great to see some Enid Blyton on there too- The Famous Five and The Secret Seven are classic! But they did acknowledge that they would need a separate list to really do British series justice.) Anyway- though I didn't see Encylopedia Brown or The Three Investigators on the list- it was nice seeing some other classic children's book series- Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle, The Boxcar Children, The Baby-sitters Club and others. And of course, Nancy Drew and The Hardy Boys made the list. :)
I'll let you all look at the link to see the listings and rankings. 8)

Just a quick thing I've been meaning to mention. On most episodes of That '70s Show, whenever there's a shot in the Formans' living room, if you look in the background, you can see a stack of the yellow and blue spined Grossett & Dunlap Nancy Drew and The Hardy Boys books. :)

And a neat item for The Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew Mysteries show- they apparently had a contest to be on an episode of the show! Neat! Here are some scans (http://sparklepony.blogspot.com/2010/01/book-shelf-tiger-beat-super-special-vol.html) from a 1977 issue of Tiger Beat with pictures and articles on Shaun Cassidy and Parker Stevenson and some appearances from Pamela Sue Martin as well.

Farrah Fawcett on the cover also caught my attention. She reminds me of Charlie's Angels and then Ryan O'Neil. (I'm not even going to get into what a so-called prince he is ::))

That seems to be based on a puzzle that was issued in the late-1970's that I believe was suppose to depict a scene with Shaun Cassidy and Parker Stevenson from The Mystery of The Haunted House.

Never seen the cartoon, is Wanda a character just for the cartoon as she doesn't appear in any of my 100 odd books?

Anyway. I know South Park take the mickey out of the boys in an episode and I think The Simpsons mentions them at some point.

Nancy Drew vs. The Hardy Boys (http://community.sparknotes.com/2012/01/19/why-nancy-drew-could-sweep-the-floor-with-the-hardy-boys) - while I could point out factors easily giving The Hardy Boys an edge in popularity, etc.- I actually like both The Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew just fine. (Though being a male, I do read The Hardy Boys more so than Nancy Drew- but yeah, I've read some Nancy Drew too and I like those as well.)
I'm mainly just glad to see that both The Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew books still have popularity with kids today.

I disagree- I like them both the same! (Okay, maybe I like the Hardy Boys a little bit better) And I posted a poll on Facebook that said "Do you know who Nancy Drew is?" And only like 2 people said yes, another 100 said no! :o Lol I got branded as a nerd for a minute there... Okay, now that saddens me that so many people don't know who Nancy Drew is- and if they do, it's only because of the video games and not the book series that inspired them. Good to see someone knows The Hardy Boys through the actual books though.

Person 1: "What about Johnson?"
Person 2: "No way, too blonde. We'd look like the Hardy Boys."

I'm surprised at the kind of humor they got away with in this show- it seems like something that would probably run on Nickelodeon- in fact, kinda reminded me some of Rugrats-type humor, though probably a bit more mature than stuff they did on that show (not that I've ever seen much of it beyond some clips here and there though.)

I may have posted this before, but apparently The Hardy Boys action figures (i.e. dolls- lol) from the 1970s The Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew Mysteries may well have been inspiration (http://totallyjem.jemmagic.com/kennerhardyboys.html) for the 1980s dolls based on the classic '80s cartoon Jem And The Holograms :) 8)

I've posted some pictures here before that I've found on Flickr- and I've recently been playing around with a similar site- Pinterest (http://pinterest.com/). I'll suffice it to say that I found numerous interesting items doing a search for both Nancy Drew (http://pinterest.com/search/?q=Nancy+Drew) and The Hardy Boys (http://pinterest.com/search/?q=The+Hardy+Boys) on there. I've found that there are way more results for Nancy Drew than The Hardy Boys though- and since the site seems to be largely of interest to women more so than men (this is just the impression I get- I have seen some men posting on there too though)- I'm not too surprised.
Anyway- thought you all might like to give it a looksee sometime.

The Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew Mysteries show is mentioned and discussed in the "1977" episode of VH1's I Love The '70s Volume 2 series.
You can watch this clip on Youtube here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ptn3vBkEhk&feature=bf_prev&list=PL5B0236D828C9D261). (It's from 51:29 to 53:00. It's a pretty short clip but at least the people interviewed were all pretty respectful to Nancy Drew and some revealed their fondness for her. Unfortunately, they didn't bother to include The Hardy Boys segment of the show... :()

I didn't know where this best fit but I ran across this and thought it was pretty cool- fan letters to Franklin W. Dixon from the 1930s! :) 8)
I wrote a fan letter to Franklin W. Dixon myself when I was in the 3rd. grade. (My teacher had suggested that I try Donald Sobol instead, probably because he's a real person ;)- and I love the Encyclopedia Brown books too, but I was set on writing to the author of The Hardy Boys books.) Of course, I only got the standard message from Simon & Schuster, "We're glad that you like our books. Thanks for buying them. Please keep doing so." on a yellow postcard, but still- it was fun. I kinda wish I'd kept it now, but it wasn't anything to get that excited about.
Anyway, I thought it was pretty neat to read some of these letters to the author back when the series was first being written.

For even more photos, go look at the New York Public Library's photostream (http://www.flickr.com/photos/77503054@N06/6976761246/in/photostream/) on Flickr. It apparently has an awesome children's literature exhibit up right now with a number of letters written by Edward Stratemeyer as well as ones to him. Some are written from him to his ghostwriters, including a few to Mrs. Wirt, giving her some direction on the writing of the first Nancy Drew book, The Secret of the Old Clock! :)
And there is also some correspondence between Stratemeyer and Horatio Alger, Jr.! There are also letters from Harriet Stratemeyer to her dad! And production schedules for the various Stratemeyer Syndicate books, including one from 1930 that lists some of the Tom Swift, The Bobbsey Twins, The Hardy Boys and of course, the first three Nancy Drew books. 8)
This is a great exhibit for children's literature fans in general and certainly specifically for fans of the Stratemeyer Syndicate books, chief among them being The Hardy Boys, of course. :D

Okay- this isn't really a Hardy Boys cover parody like some of the others I posted, but it still evokes the same feel and still looks similar to a Grossett & Dunlap hardback classic. It's apparently meant to have more of a Scooby-Doo vibe- either way, I think it's pretty cool.

In the 80s Disney Channel series "Welcome to Pooh Corner" the opening credit sequence shows the stuffed versions of the cast, behind one of them you can see an American picture cover edition of The Hardy Boys (Ironic considering that Christopher Robin is a English child living in the 1920s...)

I think someone has mentioned the Supernatural references.

I believe Veronica Mars gets asked where the Hardy Boys are during season 2 (for shame the series didn't last very long, It was a wonderful mix of Nancy Drew and Sam Spade). She did get called Nancy Drew a TON (though that's a different thread).

Awesome! I loved watching that series as a kid. That is definitely funny too because I don't think the British got any versions of The Hardy Boys books until much later. (This site (http://www.hardyboys.co.uk) can probably tell you for sure.) Maybe Christopher Robin's parents or relatives visited America and brought him back some Hardy Boys books. :D

In the classic 1985 Steven Spielberg movie The Goonies, Mikey Walsh suggests an escape plan from the Fratellis towards the end of the movie, when he and his friends are on the pirate ship- He suggests leaving at trail of jewels leading to one cave while he and his friends hide in another one. While the Fratellis are busy getting the jewels in the other cave, then the gang makes a run for it. Mikey says he saw this in The Hardy Boys.

I'm pretty sure I've posted some of these type homemade craft items before and such- but here's a Hardy Boys purse...( that doesn't sound right saying that together like that- lol ;D)
(http://canadianhandmade.ca/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/Hardy-Boys-Purse-286x300.jpg) (http://canadianhandmade.ca/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/Hardy-Boys-Purse-286x300.jpg)
I guess girls would find this pretty cool- but wouldn't it be better to get a scan of the book cover and use that as a print on the purse (or tote bag or whatever other item you want to put it on- like making one of those book safe things) than actually gutting the actual book for this project? I guess if you have an original text Hardy Boys book to spare (maybe a really beat up copy that barely qualifies as a reading copy or something), then go for it. But I'd hate to see perfectly good books getting sacrificed for this- that's like sacrificing one art form to create another....
Well, I would guess the creators of such items are more casual fans of The Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew and not hardcore fans, obviously. If you like this, you can see more of such items here (http://www.etsy.com/shop/retrograndma).

I mean- yeah, I realize an updated version of this book has been released since this original released in 1959, and this is art project is kinda cool and all- but did we really have to spoil an original text copy printing of The Hardy Boys Detective Handbook for it?

When you look at the larger image from the source link, it definitely looks pretty clear that there is a Grossett & Dunlap Hardy Boys book on there- and I'm pretty confident there's a Grossett & Dunlap Nancy Drew book next to it too. The Tom Swift I'm not totally sure on it, but it looks like the right color scheme for the Tom Swift, Jr. series from Grossett & Dunlap in the '60s- which is when this show ran, so it seems likely.
Yeah, sorry about the size of the screen capture- I just found this online.

And I don't know exactly where this should go, but I guess it will fit here. Someone made an Edward Stratemeyer action figure! Okay, more like a miniature doll. Anyway, it's pretty cool. 8) :)

Accurate...to a point.  Edward Stratemeyer, while he wrote the outline for The House On The Cliff, he had passed away by the time The Mark On The Door was even thought of and outlined (if I recall, he had outlined up to #11 While The Clock Ticked, possible #12 Footprints Under The Window).
Title: Re: The boys in pop culture
Post by: MacGyver on May 09, 2013, 08:02:28 AM
Good catch. That felt like an Encyclopedia Brown moment- "That was their mistake! The figure had to be a fake because a real Stratemeyer historian would know which books Edward Stratemeyer had outlined." :D
Oh well- I imagine those two were favorite titles for the creator of the figure.
Title: Re: The boys in pop culture
Post by: tomswift2002 on May 10, 2013, 07:38:23 AM
At least, as far as the mistake goes, the person wasn't that far off, since "Mark On The Door" was first released in 1934 (four years after Stratemeyer died).  It would've been a bigger error if it had been a book like "Mystery Of The Spiral Brdge" or "The Night of The Werewolf" from the 60's or 70's.

This entry is going in the just-so-you're-aware category, certainly not to recommend it. It seems someone has recently put out a decidedly X-rated parody version of The Hardy Boys books. I just ran across this listing on Amazon.com for The Pardy Boys (http://www.amazon.com/Where-Moth-Rust-Destroy-Mystery/dp/0981213219/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1368820696&sr=8-1&keywords=Where+Moth+and+Rust+Destroy). Interesting- the title, Where Moth and Rust Destroy, alludes to Matthew 6:19-21, the part of the Sermon on the Mount where Jesus talks about laying up treasures in Heaven- where moth and rust do not destroy.
?Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; 20 but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." (Matthew 6:19-21 in the NKJV)

Apparently, part of the plot of the book involves Frank and Joe Pardy, sons of famed lawyer Benton Pardy, trying to solve a mystery that involves a family Bible, so this may help explain the title, seeing as how this Frank and Joe are looking for treasures stored up on Earth. You can read through a few sample pages of the book, but you will probably be thoroughly disgusted and gladdened that at least the UB and HBA books are nowhere near this level of dreck.
Sadly, it appears the author is writing a sequel as well. I don't want to discourage artistry and creativity, but such vicious parody and mockery I don't encourage at all. >:( :(

It is reminiscent of The Wailing Siren Mystery and The House on the Cliff and other covers where the Hardy Boys and friends are sailing in their boat, but I'm pretty positive this cover is directly inspired by The Secret Warning- it's almost an exact copy.

Yeah- A Star Beyond Time- a classic I will have to check out later. If you look through the forum posts above, someone on there was kind enough to provide a Youtube link, along with a number of other interesting songs. :) 8)

If you look through the forum posts above, someone on there was kind enough to provide a Youtube link, along with a number of other interesting songs. :) 8)
So there we have it- a Hardy Boys and Star Trek connection! Awesome! Totally groovy! And definitely far out! (I mean, really far out- they're out in outer space- the final frontier, man.)

I had never heard of that before.

Looking it up on Memory Alpha, the track was only released as a Promo in Japan back in 1979, and then, apparently because the buzz of the movie was over by the time it was to be released in the US in 1980, the track was sent back to the Paramount vaults and was not reissued until 2012 when La La Land records released 10,000 copies of an expanded version of the Star Trek The Motion Picture Soundtrack, with the song ending up on Disc 3.

But it looks like the track was reissued by itself on iTunes.

I'm pretty sure I've mentioned a number of the various stage plays that have offered light parodies (or sometimes darker ones) of The Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew. Here is a review (http://articles.chicagotribune.com/1996-06-07/features/9606070344_1_hardy-boys-queen-town) of The Secret of the Old Queen- a 1996 production- from The Chicago Tribune. (It also mentions a Nancy Drew parody stage play that was done in 1993- The Clue in the Old Birdbath.)

A funny little jab at The Hardy Boys from a Sunday comic strip called Can You Solve The Mystery?, based on the book series of the same name (which starred Hawkeye Collins and Amy Adams. It was very much inspired by Donald J. Sobol's Encyclopedia Brown books.)

First Lady Laura Bush is a big fan of Nancy Drew and The Hardy Boys, as she apparently had some figurines of all of these characters made to set up on display in the White House around Christmas in 2004. (It seems reasonable President George W. Bush is probably a fan too, hopefully.) Why not? President Obama has made clear he's a fan of comic books and characters like Superman and Spider-Man (and he got a guest star appearance in one of The Hardy Boys graphic novels). Here's another brush The Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew have had with the President of the United States of America. :) 8)
Check this site (http://hardyboys.us/bt43.htm) for the picture of the figurines.

I found this black and white rendition of the cover on a site and thought it looked cool. (If you check the site it came from, you'll see what I mean about the cover meaning different things to different people.)

I was just reading The Nancy Drew Files Case 4: Smile And Say Murder on page 52 one of Nancy's suspects mentions that he's been reading thriller novels since he started to read the Hardy Boys in grade school.  (The book was published in October 1986, before the Casefiles, so this kind of screws up the in-series continuity between the Nancy Drew Files, Hardy Boys Casefiles, Nancy Drew/Hardy Boys SuperMysteries & Tom Swift series, or I guess it could lend credence to the Hardy's being known by an ulta-secret government agency.  Of course  this mention of the Hardy's being in books within the series contradicts what is said in The Hardy Boys Casefiles #100 True Thriller where the boys find it amusing that someone would want to write a book about them).

I was just watching part of CBC's The National, and they had a photo montage on for Stuart McLean, a long-time CBC reporter.  Anyway one of the photos was of him reading a 1950's era DJ copy of "What Happened At Midnight", a story written by none other than Leslie McFarlane, another Canadian who at one point also worked for the CBC.

Also, Tom Swift Jr. got in on the photo as the DJ for Midnight was a wrap-around and the back cover was adevettising the Tom Swift series.  But the onscreen graphic was cutting the lower half off.

The show Only Murders in the Building, which I highly recommend, has the Hardy Boys as a major plot point. Selena Gomez's character used to play Hardy Boys with another character in the show when they were kids, and there are repeated shots of the books. In fact, the books themselves hide some secrets.

On the fourth episode of The Brady Bunch Hour, Greg Brady mentions The Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew when he is in his new apartment and Vincent Price is warning him that it's haunted. Greg says, "It's not The Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew here." This seems like it might be a reference to The Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew Mysteries, since the show alternated with it, airing every fifth week.

On the "Terminal Case" episode of Tucker's Witch, there is a mention of The Hardy Boys. Rick comments to Amanda about how being on a stake out at a high school makes him feel like one of The Hardy Boys. He then says that would make his wife Nancy Drew!
Great in-joke here! Tim Matheson plays the role of Rick Tucker on this show and of course he also played one of The Hardy Boys in the 1967 pilot The Hardy Boys: The Mystery of the Chinese Junk, in which he portrayed Joe Hardy! :-)
