Title: The Hardy Men Movie
Post by: frankfan75 on June 25, 2010, 07:39:26 AM
What does every one think of the choices for the movie Tom Cruise and Ben Stiller? I just wondering if they are going to put in Chet, Tony and Biff also the girlfriends Nola or Vanessa and Callie.

Well Ben Stiller and Tom Cruise have been linked with the movie since word first surfaced in 2000.

Also its Iola not Nola.

It's funny how often people forget Iola's name. I've seen Lola a lot. This is the first time I've seen Nola.

I really hope this doesn't come out. It sounds horrible.
What we need is a Casefiles film.

I agree hexton!!

But according to http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0963174/ (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0963174/)....we shall be seeing it in 3 years.

Hahaha Exactly. I just hope the darn thing dies. But you never know. I thought a ND sequel was out of the question until recently when things started to surface again so we'll see.

Really? A sequel to Emma Roberts' 2007 Nancy Drew movie? That would be cool- I hadn't heard anything about that. Where did you hear that? I enjoyed the 2007 Nancy Drew movie- I would enjoy some more movies in that vein.
Title: Re: The Hardy Men Movie

Well, what do you know? Here's a listing for that Nancy Drew sequel movie on IMDB
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0991179/

Doesn't necessarily mean it's happening for sure, but it is being planned for 2011 apparently. I think a lot of fans panned this movie because they felt it was too much of a spoof of Nancy Drew than really being serious to the books. (Though I think it was more of some light comedic jabs but still respectful to the books. Yeah, it could have been better- but I don't think it was all that bad. I enjoyed it for the most part.)
That might sit better with most fans than The Hardy Men movie at any rate. I don't know what kind of merchandise this might generate- I'd like to wishfully think and hope for the long-awaited Season 3 of The Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew Mysteries on DVD, but seeing as how Nancy Drew was cut from the show in that last season, I would highly doubt it. Maybe whoever has the rights (I presume Disney) for the 2002 Nancy Drew pilot with Maggie Lawson could release it on DVD? There really isn't any other media appearances of Nancy Drew that I know of that hasn't already been released.

Okay- well, most all the stories about this possible Nancy Drew sequel are from 2007 or 2008, so I have a feeling this is probably an outdated story. IMDB.com does have the movie listed for 2011 though, so there's still a possibility of it happening I guess- but I'm rather doubtful on this now.

I didn't mind the 2007 Nancy Drew film but if they make another Nancy Drew film, I hope it's a reboot. I just thought there was a lot of wasted potential in the 2007 one.
Title: Re: The Hardy Men Movie
Post by: NancyDrew on August 16, 2010, 05:58:28 PM
From what I've read, both Emma Roberts and Andrew Felming have signed on for the one for 2011. I hope they do one but I agree that I'm hoping for better quality. I appreciated the little snipbits for ND fans in the movie like the beginning and the movie listing, but I'm not sure if they completely understood ND. My biggest annoyance with Hollywood: making movies about something they know nothing about. THANKS...I did love the movie but I think they missed potential. Why can't they figure out what HER did for the games? I don't know but I'm hoping for a sequel, one that shows ND for who she really is. At least it was better from the one from 2002.

And I agree that the movie was welcomed or would be welcomed much more than the Hardy Men. That clearly lacks respect for the series imo. It could be done well but as if that would happen.

Well, the makers of the 2007 Nancy Drew movie did get the creator of the nancydrewsleuth.com website as a consultant for the movie and she seems to have a favorable opinion of it. I've seen both the 2002 Nancy Drew TV-movie and the 2007 Nancy Drew movie (saw that in theaters actually- and there were very few males there when I saw it. Just a random observation there.)

Just to comment on the 2007 Nancy Drew movie...

It was actually kind of okay.

But IMO, the problem was that they were taking an classic/old-fashioned Nancy Drew and plopping her into the modern day. However, Nancy Drew is not like that: she's always up-to-date, but keeps the same kind of values. That's why she's been around this long.

Also, like someone said, they were poking fun at her a bit (which I actually don't care too much about 'cause it wasn't that bad), but it didn't work for me. I didn't even crack a smile - I just thought it was kind of cliche.

Just saw this synopsis on this website- http://www.ioncinema.com/movie/id/354

"This is a tongue-in-cheek adaptation of the classic "Hardy Boys" mystery series, "Hardy Men" is the story of the boys after they grow up. Although they haven't spoken since they ended their high-profile detective partnership 15 years earlier, they reluctantly reteam when their father is kidnapped. "

-I knew the basic story idea for The Hardy Men is that Frank and Joe have apparently grown up, enjoyed a successful detective partnership for a while, but disbanded and haven't spoken to each other for 15 years. But I don't remember if I'd seen this bit before- that they reluctantly reteam when their father is kidnapped.

So I guess Fenton Hardy would be in the movie too. But if Frank and Joe aged 15 years from their current ages of 18 and 17, they would be 33 and 32. Of course, since they must have run their detective business for at least a few years past college, I would think, maybe a safer bet would be that they are now 45 and 44, respectively. That would be closer in keeping with Ben Stiller and Tom Cruise's ages in any case. And Fenton would probably be into his '70s at that point.
Well, just speculating a little bit. I still haven't seen any new stories on this movie other than the same things I already know.
Also saw this site- http://starseeker.com/2013-movies/the-hardy-men-2013/
which is saying the movie is planned for 2013. The director is Shawn Levy and the writer is Simon Kinberg and it's a 20th. Century Fox movie.
I must say though- even if this were a straight action take and not a comedic/parody take, I still don't really like the grown up and fallen apart storyline- I'd much rather see a movie based on The Hardy Boys as they've been traditionally written in the Original 58 books (revised series.) Yes- I would expect some updates and such, but I think I would prefer it to follow the Digest storyline first. Perhaps a sequel could introduce the Casefiles world- though I'm not sure I'd want to have to see Iola dead in the movies....
But I'd much rather see The Network introduced than ATAC. But it might be best to avoid either one and just stick with the classic motif. I don't know- just make a movie true to the books and to the spirit of The Hardy Boys and their values and make it good. 8)

Oh yeah- and I definitely think Parker Stevenson and Shaun Cassidy should have cameos somewhere. I think they are by far the most popular and iconic (and best remembered) of all the actors who have portrayed Frank and Joe Hardy.
Title: Re: The Hardy Men Movie
Post by: MacGyver on January 06, 2011, 10:50:38 AM
Actually, come to think of it- if they had Parker Stevenson and Shaun Cassidy as grown up versions of Frank and Joe Hardy and then had their 18 and 17 year old kids being the ones with a successful detective agency and then a breakup and all- that might be another way to approach it. But it still wouldn't be a true movie for The Hardy Boys- just an idea though.

Whoa! Lots to respond to.

In a nutshell...

1. 15 yrs later is better than 20 or more, IMO. I agree that Ben and Tom STILL DO NOT = Frank and Joe. ESP. if that is the difference in age they are going for. Doesn't make sense. A 20something can usually play off a high school kid but a 40+ yr old really shouldn't be 33 or 32.

2. I commend 20th Century or whomever is trying to build a Hardy franchise or at least a big budget movie but Ben and Tom don't fit.

3. I don't remember the Fenton being kidnapped either. Who will play him I wonder? And why is a 70 yr old man (or younger if the boys are in their 30s) being kidnapped?

4. Mac, I still and will always agree that a HB movie based on the RT Originals or Casefiles would be MUCH better than what they are proposing.

5. JHR and Mac, YES Parker and Shaun as a cameo or otherwise would make me happy too. :)

Here's what they look like now...well as close as I could get. :)

Parker (JOE) THEN

Parker NOW

Just to clarify- someone on the message board was putting forth their dream cast and named Robert Downey, Jr. and John Cusack for the roles. But as far as we know, Ben Stiller and Tom Cruise are still attached to this movie as Frank and Joe Hardy in The Mystery of the Mid-Life Crisis. :P

I saw that too but I couldn't look more into without paying for the pro. So I wasn't able to see if there was any truth to that post besides it being a wish.

The Mystery of the Mid-Life Crisis?? Nice. :)

But they already had a convertible, boat, motorcycle, high tech van, flew planes, etc. What else can they do??? lol

Okay- this is probably the most official confirmation I have seen yet on this movie.
Here we apparently have some pictures from the set, where Tom Cruise is performing a stunt.
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-1245692/Still-risky-business--heres-Tom-Cruise-performing-stunts-latest-film.html

Now the article claims this is from The Hardy Men but I am somewhat doubtful as to the newspaper's accuracy. For one thing, this article is from January 25, 2010. So I must have totally missed this article when it originally released. I suppose it could well be for The Hardy Men movie, but I wonder if perhaps this wasn't for another of Tom Cruise's upcoming movies, like Mission: Impossible IV- Ghost Protocol (releasing December 16, 2011 :) - I hope it's a good as the third one was. Can't wait to check it out.) Or maybe even Knight and Day (since that one released June 23, 2010- I haven't seen it though I had thought about it because it looked like it might could be pretty good. Would anyone know if these stunt photos look like they came from that movie instead?) It could just be that the newspaper heard that the stunts were for Tom Cruise's next movie, knew he had been supposedly attached to do a movie version of The Hardy Boys, and assumed that these shots were for The Hardy Men and ran with it. [British tabloids seem to be notorious for this kind of thing.] Anyway- there you go.

I highly doubt it was from The Hardy Men. Most articles you find when you google are from 2007 and maybe one or two from last year.

I found this blogspot post but can't be sure if it's new or not. http://hardy-men-movie-trailer.blogspot.com/2010/12/hardy-men-2013-movie.html (http://hardy-men-movie-trailer.blogspot.com/2010/12/hardy-men-2013-movie.html)

So if Ben and Tom finally started production on this little "gem" of a movie, it would have been practically in secret at this point, don't ya think?
Title: Re: The Hardy Men Movie
Post by: MacGyver on February 28, 2011, 11:49:07 PM
Yeah- that's just it. If this movie is seriously in production, then it's either super top secret on the level of a J.J. Abrams film - or it just hasn't happened yet and all we're hearing is talk and old rumors. Because if the movie was already filming- we shouldn't have to be searching like crazy to find any kind of current mention of the movie- they should be doing a much better job on marketing and publicity. So that just makes me think that it's nothing more than an oft-repeated rumor that may finally come to fruition eventually- but if it does, we should hear a lot more about it at that point.

According to Wikipedia though...there is NO mention of The Hardy Boys movie. If it's slated for 2013 still then that could be the reason. Tom Cruise's Wikipedia is also missing any mention of this movie.

Hmm....

In someone's garbage can is fine with me. I think they should do a teen version first and set it like a Casefile but the best of all of the series put together (as far as technology, cases, etc).
Title: Re: The Hardy Men Movie
Post by: MacGyver on November 10, 2011, 04:30:01 PM
Well, not that I'm really wanting to see this movie go forward (at least not with the direction I have a sinking suspicion it will be from all that's been stated about it)- but I happened to actually find another article about its status, this one from September 25, 2011. So something fairly current then -http://collider.com/shawn-levy-hardy-boys-night-at-the-museum-3-interview/116833/?_r=true

Basically, Shawn Levy has said that though they've tried numerous approaches, they just haven't found the right script. I imagine they'll keep working on it, but hopefully they'll eventually give it up and realize that the whole concept is really not good to begin with and they're better off just not messing around with The Hardy Boys... I do kinda wonder though- if this project ever did come about, what would Simon & Schuster think about it? I suppose they would want to support it to some degree as it could help their sales....
But as pretty much everyone here has said, I'd rather see an actual movie for The Hardy Boys rather than this comedic approach...  (Now if this movie were done after a successful true-to-the-original-books Hardy Boys movie has been done- I would probably be okay with a parody- if it's done correctly and kept clean. But I feel pretty doubtful that would happen, so better just to not have The Hardy Men project at all.)

Just ran across this article (http://blogs.indiewire.com/theplaylist/shawn_levy_still_trying_to_crack_the_script_on_hardy_boys)- it's from the same time period as the last one I posted (this one's dated September 29, 2011) but it does offer a little more background on the genesis of this whole idea, at least as far as Shawn Levy's involvement in The Hardy Men.
Title: Re: The Hardy Men Movie

Well, I found this article (http://movies.yahoo.com/news/whatever-happened-ben-stiller-tom-cruise-hardy-men-174000109.html) from Yahoo today- but I'm not sure I'd actually call it news. There really is no new word on the proposed The Hardy Men movie. But this does offer one writer's interesting perspective on this possibility and how much he seems to want to see Ben Stiller and Tom Cruise together in a movie like this.
Now that The Hardy Boys Season 3 is coming to DVD, there's not even that motivation to see this movie happen. Since I doubt it would be anything more than a raunchy parody of The Hardy Boys, I would much rather not see it happen at all. However, it would be great to see an actual movie for The Hardy Boys instead.
