Title: What's the last book or item you added to your Hardy Boys collection?
Post by: MacGyver on March 20, 2013, 08:18:26 AM
I thought this might be a fun idea for a thread, if we don't already have one like it somewhere. This is just a thread to discuss any of your latest Hardy Boys finds- basically to let everyone here know of whatever cool Hardy Boys item you ran across recently because no one else you know would really care about it or understand the same way- lol. ;D
Anyway, I was a bit excited because this last weekend, I finally got the last book I was needing to have a set of all the original text Hardy Boys books. Of course, I don't have the first 38 books all in one format or anything (some are Applewood reprints, some are the later PC releases, some are the tweed covers, some are the brown covers, and one actually has the original dust jacket, etc.)- but at least I have them all in some format or another and can hopefully read all of them at my leisure at some point.
I also recently found a Minstrel copy of The Outlaw's Silver, which I'd been wanting in order to have a uniform set of the Digests. (I have a Wanderer printing, but I've been trying to get a complete set of all the Minstrel printings- again, in some cases I have the earlier cover art and others I have a later cover art- I'm not worrying about that issue right now. For now, I just want to have a uniform set of some kind or another.) I have one other title to track down the Minstrel cover art for and then that will be complete.
But I'm always on the look out at thrift stores and yard sales and antique stores, Ebay, etc. for any other cool Hardy Boys collectibles I might happen to find.
Anyone else have any other cool finds lately to share? :) 8)

Awesome finds, MacGyver! 8) That's great and exciting to have a complete original text set! They must look really nice and your Minstrel set, too, just needing one more is very cool. :)  It is so much fun looking for Hardy Boys books! ;D

Thanks, Hardy Sleuth. Sometimes it's a bummer driving out to an antique store or antique mall or thrift store, etc. and not really finding anything- but other times you have great finds and those make it really worthwhile! The thrill of the hunt! :) 8)
And yeah- it is pretty neat to have my Hardy Boys collection "complete" in some areas. (Just to clarify- I think everyone has their own definitions for when their collection is "complete"- but I'm happy to just have a copy of the different books right now. Here and there I'm still filling things in with the nicest copy I can find or a certain printing, etc.)

You're welcome. :) I know exactly what you're talking about, it's awesome fun searching for Hardy Boys books! I love going to bookstores and used book sales. ;D

Really really cool! Your definition is what counts on whether or not your collection is complete, not someone else's, because it's yours. :) Yeah, I have some books that aren't in great condition that we found at used book sales, but I'm happy to have them. Although the best condition is preferable. :D

And, much as I'd like to say this now sits on my bookshelf with all of my Hardy Boys books- no, I didn't actually buy this one. I just couldn't really spend $45 on an action figure, even though it is the Frank Hardy action figure made by Kenner as a tie in to The Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew Mysteries. :) 8) (And still in the box, no less- though the box is definitely pretty bent up.) (And as I know I've said before, I'm both a huge fan of The Hardy Boys books and this 1970s TV show version in particular- so it was really quite exciting for me to find this.) I saw this at an antique mall a few weeks back and I was ecstatic to find it! It was really cool to at least be able to look at it up close and hold it, but I just really couldn't afford to shell out that kind of money on a collectible, even a cool one like this. Still, it was neat to find it and take pictures of it. I will post some more later on.

With how much you love the 70s TV show, MacGyver, I know you had to be excited getting to see it and take pics. :) Hopefully you'll find an even better condition one to buy, and for less even! :)

Yeah, thanks- the action figures are nice for decoration and maybe to make fun photo stories or something- but honestly, I kinda figure that at least with a book collection, I actually read the books. I doubt I would seriously actually be playing with these action figures if I did get them..... but who knows? If I ran across them for the right price, then maybe I'd get them.... For now, it was just fun to actually find one and get some pictures of it. I've still got a few other pics to load when I get a chance.

I've been running across a couple of the original text Hardy Boys books lately- the PC printings from later years, that is. They are in generally nice shape and pretty cheap- I've almost considered getting a few (particularly at this one used book store where I have credit from things I've sold to them- so I have enough store credit to pick up some used books for free now. :D)
But I'm mainly only doing this for condition now- if I find a book in better condition than the one I have and it's not too bad on price- then I might pick it up. But sometimes I pick up some books for cheap like the ones I got at the library book sale this last weekend and then later come to find out that- one book is about cracked down the middle, so even though the cover and spine are in nice shape- I'm sticking with the copy I've got for now. And the other book I already have another copy of anyway. Oh well- those kinds of books either get donated somewhere or put back into an Ebay auction or something. :) 8)

That's a great deal, to be able to get HB books with your store credit! :) And that's fun, too, finding the books and then seeing which ones are in better shape! 8)

Not counting the Nancy, Dana, and Chip Hilton scores, I nabbed an upgrade of High Speed Showdown that will be the archive copy and will allow be to take the Ex-library copy as my reading copy. The great thing about library book sales, is that you can always find a good digest if your lucky. If your really lucky you'll find a early PC or a like-new casefile. If your not lucky, you'll get stuck with those icky 70s PC that are always skinny and look like they were dragged through the mud :P

Nice! Yeah, you can always find good stuff at library sales. Just recently I found some series titles myself at a library sale, but it was mainly other series and not too much on The Hardy Boys- but I did wind up buying an original text PC Grossett & Dunlap book-  that was nice.

Just got Secret of the Red Arrow in the mail today. It looks really thin ,but I measured it against the flashlight edition of #63 but their the same thickness. I believe the boards are thicker on Arrow as #63 is a good 20-25 pages longer.

Cool! I still want to get the hardcover copy of that book too. My latest item I've picked up is the audio book version of The Missing Chums on cassette tape that I found at a thrift store. :) 8) (I got this and another book or two and maybe 4 or 5 VHS tapes for 75 cents. Pretty good deal. :) 8)

Not bad!
I like the hardcover it's really tall though, the paper is the best part. It's almost like the paper Applewood used on their facsimiles.

If you're referring to Arrow, it's paper stock is not even close to the Applewood stock.  The Applewood paper is a thick, very low acidic stock, whereas S&S is using a thinned, higher acidic stock.

Hmm, I thought it did, but then again I've not opened an applewood in ages. *goes to check bookshelf* Yep , your right... but it is the same paper stock that Aladdin used in their Oz collection I have here! Maybe I was thinking that. XD (Soooo many books go through my hands...). seems a wee bit more pulpy. Sorry.

I've read UB #4 "Thrill Ride", and while it's not as bad as the book that comes after it ("Rocky Road"), it's still not very good. While there are one or two good cliffhangers, the plot was mediocre, and the villain was awful. White text contains spoilers: The bad guy was a 12 year old, and Frank and Joe needed a gadget to defeat him. Why did the UBs have such lame villains?

Yeah- it's reviews like this that keep me from reading the Undercover Brothers series......So far, I have only read the first one in the series- and even that was just like last year when the series was pretty much dead- even though I'd been buying the whole series as it was first released- and I posted my review (http://www.hardyboyscasefiles.com/forums/index.php?topic=2357.msg64655;topicseen#msg64655) of Extreme Danger elsewhere on these forums- overall it wasn't so bad as a whole- but there were things I didn't like about it from the very first page of the book! One of these days I might get around to reading the rest out of completion's sake.....but so far I've been working on finishing reading the Supermysteries series first (the '88 one, that is.)

I just got The Hardy Boys Handbook: Seven Stories of Survival in the mail. I've had the British printing for years; now, I finally have the American printing as well.  :) 8)(This is the paperback version though- the hardcover one is out there from what I understand, but it's pretty scarce to come by it.) The American printing doesn't seem to be really different from the British one though, apart from any Anglizications in the British book and different covers of course.
I did notice the size of the American version book is quite bigger than the Digests though- it's more like the size of the two books that were released based on The Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew Mysteries. (The Haunted House/Flight to Nowhere and The Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew Meet Dracula.)

Which edition?  The first four printings all contained a plug for "Night Of The Werewolf", along with the first printing mis-titling the Detective Handbook as the Detective Magazine.

Interesting- I hadn't noticed that part about the mistaken title used for The Hardy Boys Detective Handbook- I'll have to check my copy for that. Thankfully, I was able to get an early printing of The Sting of the Scorpion some years ago and it does indeed have Night of the Werewolf mentioned as the next case. :)

Hmm- okay. If it's one of the flashlight cover printings, it's a newer printing of the book- I believe that run of printings began somewhere in the late '80s. (I want to say 1987 for some reason, but I'm not sure on that.)

Sounds like you've got a post-2005 printing, since 2005 was when G&D released "Night Of The Werewolf", but they didn't re-insert the plug. (In the Flaslight editions the year of printing is listed on the copyright page.). But the Flashlight editions were first released in 1987.

A few weeks back I picked up an official VHS release by Universal of The Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew Mysteries episode- "The Mystery of the Jade Kwan Yin"- the tape looks like it's about in brand new condition, so that's pretty cool. I don't think there's any difference in it or the Season 1 DVD release though- I guess I don't really know why I grabbed at the library sale- I just had it among some other videos and it was pretty cheap in any case. :) 8)

Universal seemed to use the same master for the DVD's that was used for the VHS/Beta releases back in the 80's.  On Kwan Yin you can freeze frame it on both the VHS & DVD when the boys leave the office, and you can actually see the editor's thumbprint on the video.

If you go to this groups Facebook page you can see the scans of the "A" side and the "B" side of the Portugese version of the 1970 Hardy Boys 45 single "Love and Let Love/Sink Or Swim".  Remember the American/Canadian version of the single used the same cover artwork as the 33 album (the group around the angel statute).  (Sorry, I can't get the photo's to appear here.)

yeah- thanks, Hardy Sleuth. I have read The Sign of the Crooked Arrow some years ago and I definitely enjoy it. I mainly picked up that book because I didn't have a Grossett & Dunlap copy- there are still some of the original 58 books (revised editions) that I only have a copy of via a British paperback printing, so I'm trying to fill in those with a Grossett & Dunlap hardcover printing where I can.

So, you all remember this post?...
QuoteAnd, much as I'd like to say this now sits on my bookshelf with all of my Hardy Boys books- no, I didn't actually buy this one. I just couldn't really spend $45 on an action figure, even though it is the Frank Hardy action figure made by Kenner as a tie in to The Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew Mysteries.   (And still in the box, no less- though the box is definitely pretty bent up.) (And as I know I've said before, I'm both a huge fan of The Hardy Boys books and this 1970s TV show version in particular- so it was really quite exciting for me to find this.) I saw this at an antique mall a few weeks back and I was ecstatic to find it! It was really cool to at least be able to look at it up close and hold it, but I just really couldn't afford to shell out that kind of money on a collectible, even a cool one like this. Still, it was neat to find it and take pictures of it. I will post some more later on.

Well, I've got another cool and exciting find like that to share....... I'll post about it soon- once I get the pictures ready... :) 8)

In the mean time, I've also recently gotten a Grossett & Dunlap printing of The Haunted Fort (newer Flashlight version).

And this can fall under either the Hardy Boys or Nancy Drew threads, I guess, but anyway- just yesterday I got a copy of Process of Elimination- the last book in the Nancy Drew & Hardy Boys Supermystery series. (I already had a copy of this book, but the one I had obviously had some water damage to it, so I was glad to replace it with this much nicer copy!) :) 8)

About a month or two back, I actually found the Joe Hardy action figure from Kenner! Yay! (And at the same antique mall too- wow! Of course, again- I'm not going to pay $50 for it.) So now I've found both of The Hardy Boys action figure tie-ins to The Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew Mysteries. :D It is a cool collectible, but honestly- it's not like I'm going to really pull it out and play with it- so, I just don't want to spend a ton of money for something that will just sit on display on a bookshelf and gather dust. But it was really cool to find it- I was pretty ecstatic for that. And I took some pictures of it to remember it.

Ebay is a great way to build your Hardy Boys collection! :) 8)
Another good way is library sales! Woohoo! :) 8)
My local library just had one of their sales last weekend and so I picked up a few good books. For The Hardy Boys, I got a different copy of The Secret of Wildcat Swamp (newer printing and in better condition- I will probably decide which one I want to keep, as I mentioned I got a copy of this a while back and then sell or give away the other.)

A few days back, I got the Wanderer hardcover reprint (i.e. Flashlight style) of The Stone Idol. With those going out of print now, I'm trying to get the few of those I don't already have. Of course, I'd love to find some of the original Wanderer hardcovers with dust jackets- but those seem to be pretty hard to come by....

Last time that I was at my local library they still had a few of the original Wanderer hard cover books on the shelf, however, most of them were just as they were years ago when I checked them out, missing their dustjackets. Having a DJ on the book will make the books even more valuable.

Oh yeah- definitely. If I were to ever find any, I would want to have the dustjacket if at all possible. I actually have run across some of the Nancy Drew books, but not The Hardy Boys. (i.e. in physical stores. I haven't really scoured the Web for these books- I'm sure they're out there somewhere.) I don't know if I'm ready to really invest in the books- it's just one of those things I keep an eye out for if I ever happen to find some at an affordable price.

Yeah, I enjoy it. It actually feels like an early version of things to come- I mean, here in The Hardy Boys Mystery Stories series we have SKOOL versus UGLI in this book. (I'm guessing obviously inspired by TV shows and movies of the time- like Get Smart and The Man From U.N.C.L.E. and I Spy and the James Bond movies. :) 8))
And of course, years later in The Hardy Boys Casefiles we had The Network versus The Asassins (and MUX as well.) And then after that in The Hardy Boys Undercover Brothers- ATAC. (Okay- I don't recall if there was an evil organization they fought against though.)

Nice find. I remember getting and reading The Hypersonic Secret back when it first released- great book. Jamal Hawkins makes his first appearance in this book, I do believe. And it's also the last Minstrel book to use what I consider the classic Digest look that I love from the '80s before getting a big makeover come 1996. :) 8) (The other design styles are cool too though.)

YAY! Just the other day, I found The Hardy Boys Favorite Classic copy of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain! That was so crazy just to find a copy at my local used bookstore the other day. Totally unexpected but totally welcomed! So I have one book in my collection now! Woohoo! :) 8) (Hopefully, I can track down the other two books in time.) Honestly though, for anyone interested in these, I have to tell you- it's not that terribly exciting. The book is clearly marked as "A Hardy Boys Favorite Classic" and the titles released are actually numbered as well. And there's a foreword by Franklin W. Dixon- but that's really it for The Hardy Boys' tie-in. I guess there isn't much else that could have been done with this- unless maybe they had added a backstory with Frank and Joe somehow involving a short mystery involving the book in question or referencing it or something- that could have been a neat little bonus.
Oh well- still a fun collectible and the actual story by Mark Twain is certainly a classic worth reading. (I should note too that this copy of the book actually attributes the book's authorship to Samuel Clemens, which is Mark Twain's real name, of course.) :) 8)

Interesting, I've never heard of these before! So it's a Tom Sawyer book, but the series is called Hardy Boys Favorite Classics, huh? What do the covers look like? What years are these from? I wish they'd have thought of your idea, it's a good one! 8)

The Hardy Boys Favorite Classics were released in the late-1970's by Grosset & Dunlap, and there were only 3 books released.  "Treasure Island" and "Huckleberry Finn" were the other two books released.

Awesome! According to The British Hardy Boys site (http://www.hardyboys.co.uk), that title is quite rare- apparently, it was the last of the Casefiles to be printed with the Brian Kotzky art and of course, the last from Armada. Nice find. :) 8)

QuoteInteresting, I've never heard of these before! So it's a Tom Sawyer book, but the series is called Hardy Boys Favorite Classics, huh? What do the covers look like? What years are these from? I wish they'd have thought of your idea, it's a good one!
Thanks!

I just picked up the dj version of "Mystery Of The Desert Giant" for $8.  (I put a picture of it up on the Facebook page.). This book was only printed in DJ format in 1961, the year it was issued.  In 1962 G&D switched to the cheaper PC versions.

And it was one find that didn't require the internet.  I just walked into the used bookstore in town and there it was (along with 4 other 1960-61 printings of Flickering Torch, Short-Wave, Secret Of Skull Mountain & Wailing Siren that still had their DJ's) and all 5 were $8.

That's always great when you just have random awesome finds like that at the used bookstore. That's how it was when I finally picked up that copy of Hardy Boys Favorite Classic #2 The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain- I had known about the book and been interested in finding it- and then suddenly, I just walk into one of my local used bookstores and it's just sitting there that day! :) 8)

Especially since, I just looked on Ebay, and there's one on there right now for $119.79USD/$127.92CDN before shipping, in worst condition, and with a faded spine.  So you can get better bargains sometimes for the books.

Wow- that's crazy. Yeah, Ebay definitely has some jacked-up prices at times... but it all depends on the rarity of the book and the condition.

Nice! I haven't read The Mummy Case in a long while, but it's a good one. (Of course, they all are.) :) 8)
This book is one in a range of Hardy Boys books that I particularly like because the Hardy Boys delve a lot into the supernatural and/or fantasy realm for a bit here. (Basically, #59 through #85 or so.) Though I don't believe in werewolves and zombies and such, of course- it's still fun to read books that play around with it a bit and make you think, "What it?"..... As long as they have a logical explanation at the end, which these books do, I'm okay with them. (I take issue with others though...particularly #177, which is probably one of my least favorite of The Hardy Boys books- though even that one did have some cool things.)
And of course, as I've said on here a number of times, I LOVE the 1970s Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew show. :) 8)

Just yesterday I ran across a great antique mall with an awesome selection of children's books- they had so many various series. I found some cool items, but my most exciting find was definitely my Hardy Boys find- some of the hardback Wanderer books with dust jackets! I very rarely seem to come across those- in fact, while I've come across Nancy Drew Wanderer hardbacks before, I think this may be the first time I've found Hardy Boys Wanderer hardbacks before, so that was way exciting. :) 8) (I should clarify that it's the first time I've seen them in person for sale; I actually had shortly before this ran across a few that my church library now owns. :o :) 8))

I recently upgraded a few of the original text Hardy Boys books (G&D PC cover printings) and that was neat. (Specifically, The Secret of Wildcat Swamp, The Secret of Skull Mountain and The Clue in the Embers). And I added a tweed cover G&D printing of The Tower Treasure (revised). (Would have been nice to get this with the dust jacket still on it, of course- but considering I rather shockingly :o found this in a free bin at a used bookstore- I'm not complaining.) :D 8)

Yeah- I read all the revised books while growing up, but it's only recently that I've read any of the original text books. I went on a binge a while back trying to get a copy of all of them and I do have all the OT books now too- it's just a matter of finding time to read them all. :)

In the case of "Skull Mountain" "Wildcat Swamp" and "Clue In The Embers", the original texts read as longer versions of the revised texts, with a few minor changes here and there.

I wasn't terribly worried about getting these for my collection, but since I happened to find one at random at a used bookstore, I was happy to grab it up.

Are there UK spellings?

Cool! I haven't gotten any of the new cover re-releases yet, but I might like to pick up The Secret of the Old Mill at some point (as that's about the only one that I really like pretty well.) :)
So I take it this means they're already in stores now? I will have to look for them.

I got my new cover books from Chapters-Indigo.ca.  When I asked at the store, the sales person told me that the books will probably be available on the shelf in the big Chapters - Indigo box stores in Ottawa and Toronto.  But in the Coles mall outlets, again probably in Ottawa and Toronto you'll see them (maybe not all four, but one or two), but in the rural regions the books will probably be only available online.

#160 A Game Called Chaos

The price on the back of the book says $9.95 ($11.99 CA).   That sounds awfully expensive for a paperback.

Wow- that can't be right. I bought that book when it released and I'm pretty sure it didn't cost quite that much. I hope that's a typo and not the current price for Hardy Boys books.

It was selling brand new on Amazon for 5.99 (via amazon, not there marketplace), but the back of the book says 9.99.   And the book is taller than the rest of the books.  That doesn't make much sense either.  And the paper is different than the rest too.

A few years ago (about 2010), for some reason it was reprinted and available on S&S's website for that price.  No one could find it in stores, but I remember someone ordered it and said it felt like it had been printed on heavier paper stock than normal, hence the more expensive price.

I just got two more books with this same increased price, taller shape, and heavier paper.  The price I actually paid for it was not the 8.95 and 9.95 that the back covers show.

WOW! I had a great find at random this last weekend at a thrift store.
I got these two books- The Hardy Boys Mystery Mazes by Vladimir Koziakin and Nancy Drew's Clever Crosswords by Dawn Gerger. They were used, of course, but neither one was totally completed, I don't think, and they were still in generally good shape.
I like how both these books included mazes or crosswords respectfully, all based on books in the two series. The Hardy Boys book utilized the cover art from the Grosset & Dunlap books for the most part. It's also kinda neat to see order forms in these books that didn't list the entire G&D catalog as we know it now- because some books were still yet to be printed! (These activity books are copyright 1977, of course- as they were tie-ins to The Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew Mysteries television show!) One of the really cool things about these books is that they include a lot of promotional pictures from the show- including some I haven't seen anywhere else before- some that I'm pretty sure were not even used on the show or in merchandise otherwise.
These books are not something I've been really actively seeking out to order online or anything- but when I run across them at random like this and can pick them up for super cheap- I'm certainly happy to grab them up to add to my Hardy Boys collection (and very small Nancy Drew collection.) :) 8)

This isn't a Hardy Boys book, but it's certainly related, so I thought I'd post it here too.

Nancy Drew Mystery No. 19 The Mystery of the Tolling Bell

For people used to the North American releases, yes, you may realize that the numbering is off here- that's because this is a British paperback from Armada that I got here. :) 8)
It's in fact a 1979 printing that features Pamela Sue Martin as Nancy Drew on the cover!!! (With a "Now on T.V." banner on the book!) I LOVE this! I have been aware of these books featuring stars of The Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew Mysteries, but never owned one until now. It hasn't been a huge priority but I came across it recently and was ecstatic to have this to add to my collection. It's really cool to see things come full circle with this, with the books being turned into a TV show and then have the TV show selling the books with covers like this! I'm totally counting this as a collectible from the show as much as from the book series franchises themselves as well.

On Christmas Eve I picked up the "Nancy Drew & Hardy Boys: Be A Detective #4 Secret Cargo".  This one was kind of interesting, as the book has a white square where the UPC would normally be, but the ISBN is there, so I wonder if the copy is a book club edition.

Nice find! Yeah, that could be- I know there are some Scholastic book club editions of The Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew- usually, it's not much difference other than their logo on the spine of the book- but in some cases, there have been entirely different covers produced and those are interesting. (I'm thinking of Nancy Drew books #63 and 64 here.)

I had another totally unexpected but really cool find at a thrift store yesterday! I got The Hardy Boys Adventure Activity Book #1 by Tony Tallarico! He did a series of books like this, presumably as a tie-in to the '70s show. The illustrations are based more on the books themselves rather than the show. (i.e. The cover features Frank and Joe looking more like their appearances on the Grosset & Dunlap books than as Parker Stevenson and Shaun Cassidy.) And these books are longer and taller than the other set of activity books released that were very specifically based on the '70s show with pictures from the series.
For the most part, this Tallarico book was unused as well and in good shape! It's not something I've been very actively pursuing, but I was happy to add this to my collection for cheap.

Now that I've finally looked through this whole book, I can also add that it contains an activity of some sort (connect the dots, coloring, word searches, picture puzzles, etc.) for the first 56 books in The Hardy Boys original series. (Since the copyright is 1977 from the Stratemeyer Syndicate, it wouldn't have #57 and #58 yet, as they hadn't been published yet.)
It's pretty cool. :) 8) Reading through all the activities makes me want to go back and reread all these great books. :)

From 1992-2006, Applewood Books released reproduction copies of #'s 1-16.  #'s 1-11 were facsimiles of their original first editions from 1927-1932 printings in the red covers.  #'s 12-16 were changed by continuing the red boards under the dustjackets, which these numbers were never released in.  So those might be cheaper—-although the later numbers were not out all that long, and at one point #7 seemed to be the scarcest.

Cool- I enjoyed that one pretty well due to Chet and Iola and the Morton farm having a large presence in the book.

"Farming Fear" was also odd in that the Morton farm is apparently owned by Chet's grandparent's, with Chet & Iola's family living in Bayport, whereas all of the previous 187 books had Chet's parents owning the farm and living on the outskirts of Bayport.

I have had both of The Hardy Boys PC games but I have only recently finally started playing them some. I hate to say it but I've gotten tired of going through The Perfect Crime real quick. I may try to stick it out just to say I beat the game but I don't foresee any real replay value with this one.

At least the first Casefiles logo that ran from 1-104.  But, does this mean the series is going to incorporate elements of the Casefiles?

Or I wonder if we might see the Casefiles reissued to tie-into the series?

My guess this was simply a marketing ploy to get more viewers.  I would imagine that logo is the most recognized logo of most of the hardy boys logos and it probably hits a certain demographic that they want to pull into the audience.

Yeah, but it's kind of odd, since no books have used that logo in 25 years!  Of course the other well known Hardy Boys logo is the banner logo that was on the Mystery Stories from 1985-1995.

Just got The Hardy Boys 101The Money Hunt.  (Published April 1990, 30.75 years ago!) I remember reading it in the late-90's when I borrowed it from the local library, but that's the last time that I recall reading it.  I still have a few books to go before I get to it (I'm just about to start #95 Danger On The Air, but it was the only one in the next 20 or so numbers that I didn't have).

I like the cover art on this one, reminds me of The Arctic Patrol Mystery with the bear bearing down on Frank.

This is kind of interesting, but Tom Cochrane's 1991 album "Mad, Mad World" (that features the hit song "Life Is A Highway") was produced, engineered and mixed by Joe Hardy!  Joe Hardy also played percussion on some tracks and 12-string on one track.

I just got "The Hardy Boys Adventure Activity Book #2" by Tony Tallarico.  It's from 1977 by Grosset & Dunlap under their Elephant Books imprint.  Plus mine seems to be the scarcer Canadian edition, not to mention but being #2, it's not as common as #1, but it is more common than #3.  One interesting thing with this book is that on the copyright page, the Stratemeyer Syndicate is given copyright credit, unlike the main series where it would say "Copyright 19XX Grosset & Dunlap", and then in 1980's printings have the extra line of "Copyright Awarded to Stratemeyer Syndicate 1980".

I'm now only seven books away from a complete Casefiles collection. Also, the bottom isbn in the encyclopedia for each of the first 10 casefiles is for the largeprint library editions of the casefiles - I would highly recommend if for nothing else than the large cover art alone.

I recently got a copy of The Hardy Boys Three-In-One hardback released by Grosset & Dunlap, featuring The Tower Treasure, The House on the Cliff and The Secret of the Old Mill. Unfortunately, the book is very weathered and battered; the spine is held together with thick tape. Still, it's nice to finally find a copy at a used book store.
And just yesterday, I found a really cool find quite unexpectedly at my local Goodwill. I now have a copy of Nancy Drew and The Hardy Boys Super Sleuths! 2 that is the quite scarce standard release version. (There is another version that has a banner on the front saying "Compliments of Walden Books and Kool-Aid", which is far more common.) The copy I found has water damage and some tears but it's still a neat, rare find that I'll happily take for cheap from the thrift store. :) 8)

"Super Sleuths 2" is also scarce in the "Compliments of Hastings" banner.  But, by and far that Waldenbooks/Kool-Aid version seems to be the one with the highest release.

I've never seen the back cover of the standard edition.  Does it have a write-up on it?

Just got in the mail today a rather scarce Hardy Boys book—-even though the book is very well known and is still available brand-new nowadays.

It is The Hardy Boys Ghost Stories!  However the cover art is the Wanderer cover art cropped within the Minstrel border and flag (someone uploaded an image of one at the Hardy Boys Wiki, I seem to have a variant, as mine is more centered than the HBW scan since the banner doesn't go as low and there is not as much purple at the top but there is more purple at the bottom.)

For decades people thought that the first Minstrel cover art was the familiar orange one with Frank and Joe opening the chest and being surrounded by the ghosts.  That cover art was issued sometime in 1987/88.  The second Minstrel artwork was released around 1996 (I have a 11th Minstrel printing that lists to "Slam Dunk Sabotage" which came out in October 1996, while I have a 9th printing with the chest cover that lists to "Day of the Dinosaur" from October 1994).  Then the third Minstrel artwork (scarecrow cover, not to be confused with the 1984 Armada Scarecros cover from the UK), which was also used on the current Aladdin editions, was released in 2001, with the first Aladdin printing appearing in May 2002 (between "Trouble In Warp Space" & "Speed Times Five") with the book's 15th Minstrel printing.  Also of note, for some strange reason, between 1989 and 2001, the copyright page for "Ghost Stories" contained a 'Copyright 1989 Simon & Schuster' line even though it was first released in 1984.  This Wanderer/Minstrel hybrid contains a 1984 copyright, although by this time the internal artwork has been removed.

But clearly, that was in error, as "Ghost Stories" falls into that odd Wanderer/Minstrel hybrid category that only one other Hardy Boys book fell into: The Four-Headed Dragon's first Minstrel printing used the Wanderer artwork (this is another scarce Hardy Boys book) and didn't get its second artwork until 1988.

Before this cover I thought the scarcity of GS covers was like this:

Aladdin Scarecrow (extremely common)
Orange Chest (extremely common)
Wanderer Paperback (hard-to-find)
1996 - 2000 "Scarecrow Face" (difficult to find)
Wanderer Hardcover (scarce)
Minstrel Scarecrow 2001 cover (scarce possible due to one print run before switch over to Aladdin)

But now I'd put this Hybrid edition in with the Hardcover & 2001 editions as "Scarce".

I can't date my copy any more than after July 1987 but before the end of 1988.  There's no sign of pages being ripped out, but there are no order forms or even a series list, and no teaser page.  1st Minstrel printings would, if there was a list, only list to The Skyfire Puzzle, as The Mystery Of The Silver Star wasn't released until September 1987.  But my book's a 2nd Minstrel printing.

Also the title page is different from the later Minstrel editions.  It looks like it came from the Wanderer edition but with the Minstrel info; the later ones use the stylized GS title from the orange edition (even both copies of the FACE one I have), and then the Aladdin uses the file folder fonts.  Also the page order is title page, copyright, forward, blank, contents, blank, first story page.  The later editions go (after teaser/series list) title, copyright, contents, forward, first story page.

Also the hybrid edition uses the Wanderer tagline of "Will Frank and Joe survive the supernatural spirits that torment them?" rather than the later "Six spine-tingling adventures of supernatural mystery!" Or the Aladdin one: "Six Bone-Chilling Tales of Mystery and Terror!".

Oh and a few more things, on the hybrid there is no reading level or age range on the back cover (later ones have a 6.3 RL and 8-14 while the Aladdin gets rid of the RL).  And the spine has the Minstrel Logo at the bottom, above the ISBN & $3.50 price (my orange one is missing the ISBN & price), and the Hardy Boys logo at the very top (so close that it was almost cut off!)

Cool find!
Is this book the same size as a standard Digest? I have seen a pocket size variation that is almost the size of a Case file with the Wanderer artwork. (I think it's the Minstrel purple background print.)

Just got over the past week both the paperback and hardcover version of "As The Falcon Flies", the new Adventure book.  Don't know when I'll get around to reading it, as I still haven't read "Troublesome Tide" or "Mystery on the Mayhrm Express".  The Adventures seem to be very clumsily written and not that interesting for adventure stories.

I recently picked up a copy of this 3-in-1 book from Grosset & Dunlap.

(I mentioned finding a copy before but that was a badly damaged copy. This one is in much nicer shape and the spine isn't held together with brown tape on this one!) :) 8)

Both The Shadow Killers & Breakdown In Axeblade seem to have been written for the Casefiles but then changed into Mystery Stories.

There's not much to say about Sabotage At Sports City

But Past and Present Danger is an interesting book, as it focuses on Aunt Gertrude, kind of like the Casefiles[/b] A Killing In The Market, 13 years earlier. It also fleshes out Gertrude's engagement that Fenton Hardy mentioned in The Phantom Freighter.

But PAPD's claim to fame is that it was the first Hardy Boys book ever to have Digital release and that Digital release is still available now, 21 years later (although I'm not sure if it's still in the same Microsoft e-reader format as it was released in 21 years ago, or if S&S has discontinued that format).

The main thing I say about Sabotage at Sports City is that it's a mystery set at the Olympics that seems huge and daunting in scope at first but turns out to be a smokescreen for something else, which involves some interesting observation skills and arguments in court to make the case stick. I like all those aspects, along with the general sports theme. It's just one I've enjoyed reading and rereading at various times. :)  8)

Just got in the mail yesterday, a 16mm print of Episode 10 of the Disney serial "The Mystery At Ghost Farm" called 'Detectives In Trouble', that aired October 14, 1957.  This 16mm reel has the whole Mickey Mouse Club episode on it.

Wow! That is pretty cool! I assume you have a projector to watch it on too?
I have a VHS and DVD release that have segments from "The Mystery of Ghost Farm" and those are the only official releases of any portion of that Hardy Boys serial as far as I know, outside of the 16 mm reels. I'd still love to see it on DVD or at least streaming on Disney+.

I think what's been released on VHS & DVD have been the intro segments where they just introduce the cast and what the serial will be about.

I do have a projector but it needs a little work.

I just got in the mail Dead On Target, Evil, Inc, Cult of Crime, The Lazarus Plot, Edge of Destruction, Hostages of Hate & The Haunted Fort in paperback by Armada from Australia.  It still interesting how The Lazarus Plot uses Brian Kotzky's cover, but flipped it, so that Frank is on the right, rather than the left.  Armada did the same for the cover for The Genius Thieves as well (the reversed GT cover also appeared on a couple omnibuses.)

Also, I noticed that with The Haunted Fort, on the copyright page it has a 1973 copyright to Simon & Schuster.  (The copy I got is the sea dragon cover from 1992.)  My North American version has a 1965 Copyright to Grosset & Dunlap, so the copyright should've been 1965, not 1973.

Just got in the mail today the physical #142 Lost In Gator Swamp.  I've been looking for it for the past 25 years, but I never could find it.  This is one of the few The Hardy Boys Mystery Stories that I have not read.  But the cover has always been an interesting cover.

The book was digitally released on January 29, 2013 after having been out of print for nearly a decade.

Wow! Nice to finally find this Hardy Boys book! Hope the read is worth the wait!  :)  8)
I was able to complete a set of Digests some years back. I have read all The Hardy Boys Mystery Stories From 1 to 190 in some form or another, but that's over the course of childhood to adulthood. (And I should clarify that I have read most all the revised editions, though I have read some of the original text too.)
I am at a place where I am content with my Hardy Boys collection but there are a few things here and there I wouldn't mind getting if I run across them for cheap.

I'm still trying to fill in a few spots.

But that's one of the reasons that I've been reading the series from The Tower Treasure through to Motocross Madness, since there are titles that I haven't read like Robot Revenge or Gator.

Just got the scarce dust jacketed version of The Crimson Flame published by Wanderer Books in 1983.  It's an ex-library copy, but while the dj Isn't pristine, it's also not as not as ratty as a few other copies I've seen.

Just to give you a sense of inflation over the last 40 years, the dj contains a price of $8.95.  That's equivalent to $25.57 in 2022.  By comparison the new Hardy Boys dj versions are $17.99 US.

Yeah I'm on the look out for them.  The two really scarce ones are Revenge of The Desert Phantom & The Skyfire Puzzle.  There might've only been 5,000 or less of each of those books printed by Wanderer (in the UK & Australia they were printed by Angus & Robertson, and there seems to have been more hardcover printings of those books than the American Wanderer books).

Just got the scarce audio cassette version of Here Come The Hardy Boys.  It's period, since the tape has paper labels on it, a trend that didn't extend much past-1975, since in the mid-70's, a lot of tape has been silk screened because silk screening prices dropped, and the plastic case enclosing the reels is a white plastic case.  The clear-plastic see-through cases started to be used in the early- to mid-80's.

Also I just noticed on the back cover it's stamped "Not For Sale Promotion Use Only".  That makes this copy really scarce.

Just received in the mail this morning The Witchmaster's Key the scarce 1980 Collins hardcover edition.  Collins only did one print run of this book in 1980, and they had Grosset & Dunlap actually print it in the US, along with #'s 49-54 & 56 in the Collins ordering as Collins was about to loose the hardcover rights.  Now then, the Collins version of The Witchmaster's Key is also infamous in the series as it is the only title in both the Collins and Grosset & Dunlap orderings to have the same number, 55, and the 1980 Collins hardcover removed the box with the number from the front cover, even though it didn't need to be, unlike the Collins printing of The Sting of the Scorpion that needed the number removed, because Scorpion moved up 2 numbers from 58 to 56.

After 1980, The Witchmaster's Key would not be available from Collins until 1991!  So in between British and Commonwealth (except Canadians) would've been relying on imports of this title and the other G&D printed Collins books.  http://hardyboys.co.uk/gallery/55.php#co

I also received in the mail this morning the Collins hardcover edition of #47 The Jungle Pyramid.  This is the original 1979 printing, as again #'s 37-48 were reprinted with red spines in Italy in the 1980's for some reason, and I think I've got JP in red, but this is the 1979 edition. http://hardyboys.co.uk/history/collins2.php

It seems like the 55 is still on the spine though, at least in the picture on the site. It seems like it would have been easier for Collins to just leave the front cover of this book alone.

Well the other G&D printed Collins Hardy's didn't have numbers on the front covers, so the editors might've been thinking that it would make the book look odd, also the first 48 Collins hardcovers didn't have numbers on the front either.

But G&D did change the numbers on the spine for the other Hardy's, and the back list.

But with no text changes, I've got wonder what UK and Australian fans in 1980 were thinking when they read that the Hardy's first case was The Tower Treasure and their most recent was The Mysterious Caravan and the next was The Jungle Pyramid, as those were #'s 31, 41 & 47 in the Collins series, while Collins #1 was The Mystery of the Aztec Warrior.

As a Hardy Boys fan who grew up with the Collins/Armada order, I can tell you it was weird to later find out that the USA books had a totally different order.
At the start of The Mystery of the Aztec Warrior, Frank even has a line that makes it sound like it could be their first case, saying that he and Joe are ready to tackle a mystery.

I stopped reading the Hardy Boys after #84 Revenge of the Desert Phantom back in the 80's.

However, my wife and I became empty nesters last year, and we decided to collect Hardy Boys books as a new hobby. I've had the original 58 books and the digests up to #84 for several years now.

I've been collecting the remaining digests from eBay and Amazon. I'm getting #121 today and am currently reading #91 Shield of Fear.

Wow! Even simpler than I thought! Thank you for that information. I'll review my books - I do have some small plot errors I need to fix, but I'll try to get those uploaded sometime soon.

They're a hybrid of the digests and the casefiles and take place in the 1980s. A bit more violent than the digests but less violent than the digests.

"Less violent than the casefiles" is how it should have read...🤦♂️

The Mystery Stories had a run of those type of stories between #84 and #105.  It seems from 1987-1990 Mega-Books had more Casefiles-type stories commissioned, so they turned some, like Breakdown In Axeblade &Shield of Fear into Mystery Stories

Also in the early 80's you can see the Stratemeyer Syndicate experimenting with what would be Hardy Boys Casefiles elements.  If you think Dead On Target was the only time the Hardy's yellow convertible was blown up think again!  Their yellow convertible was blown up in #74 Tic-Tac-Terror in 1982 and then replaced with a newer yellow convertible, which was the convertible blown up in Dead On Target.

Good point! I remember that in both books because in the Armada paperback version of Tic-Tac-Terror, the cover artwork depicts the explosion, like Dead On Target depicts that other explosion.

I wound up selling it because I didn't have that much interest in it but I thought I would mention that I recently picked up the Scholastic paperback printing of Night of the Werewolf. I think that's the first time I've run across a Scholastic printing of The Hardy Boys though I've found plenty for Nancy Drew at times.

I've never seen the Scholastic version of Night of the Werewolf.  But I've got both The Tower Treasure & The House On The Cliff (flashlight printings) that were published by Scholastic.  I think I might have one or two of the later file folder Mystery Stories published by Scholastic, but Scholastic published a bunch of Mystery Stories in the early-2000s (I think we're talking the Aladdin era so 2002-2005) including the Scarecrow cover of Ghost Stories

In the late-70's, Scholastic also published what could be considered the only bonus feature for the 1977-1979 Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew Mysteries, the behind the scenes book by Peggy Hertz Nancy Drew & The Hardy Boys (aka The Hardy Boys & Nancy Drew in later printings).

I also have from Nancy Drew the early-80's printing of The Captive Witness.  This is one Nancy Drew book that many think was a Hardy Boys originally, but was changed to a Nancy Drew before publication.

I just recently got two really cool items!
The first one is The Hardy Boys Secret-Code Activity Book by Tony Tallarico!
It includes illustrations and activities, along with short stories to set up the activities. I assume the framing stories are based on the books but they might be original material!
I will have to look more closely to confirm that.
The other item I got is an Armada boxed set of The Hardy Boys books that features Parker Stevenson and Shaun Cassidy as Frank and Joe Hardy! It also includes While The Clock Ticked and The Wailing Siren Mystery, the two books that featured photographs of Stevenson and Cassidy on the covers! As a huge fan of The Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew Mysteries TV show, I am particularly happy to own this one!  :)  8)

I also recently got The Hardy Boys Adventure Activity Book #2 by Tony Tallarico. It's totally unused too! :)  8)

I've gotten two Hardy Boys collectibles recently. For one, I finally decided to buy the board game (https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/14081/hardy-boys-mystery-game-secret-thunder-mountain) released based on The Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew Mysteries TV show. This is the standard American release, which is just in English. (I'm just mentioning this to differentiate from the Canadian version, which has both English and French.) It's called "The Hardy Boys Mystery Game: The Secret of Thunder Mountain". It's a fun collectible to have from the show; hopefully I'll get a chance to try playing it soon enough.
And just today I got in the mail the book numbered 17 in The Hardy Boys Mystery Stories in the British numbering system used by Armada and Collins- and that would be a Collins hardcover (http://hardyboys.co.uk/gallery/17.php#co) copy of The Shore Road Mystery. :)  8)

Collecting has changed so much over the years.  What took us months to find is now available so easily.  searches on the internet and online book stores have made so many things possible. The only comment about collecting that I can extend is:  The quality of the books have diminished so much.  Back in the 70's and 80's finding books were harder, but the quality of what you could find was amazing. There are still some very hard to find books.  Example:  I wonder if anyone has come across an edition of "The Short Wave Mystery" in purple binding. It was the only book bound in purple boards. I will look to see if I can find one and get someone to post it. The oddities of the printings are truly remarkable. If you can get a copy of Tony Carpentieris book from Synsine it is well worth the bucks. He has the most detailed book in the world regarding editions and printings. I have not talked to him for some years, but I do know that he is very helpful. I also have stayed in touch with several of the earlier artists.  Several still sell art on the internet and are available for commissioned pieces.  If you want to see some of the art, email me at lathdon @ yahoo . com      HAPPY HUNTING!!!!
