Title: 2011 Book Club Schedule Sign Up
Post by: hardygirl847 on November 14, 2010, 11:08:47 PM
Welcome to the Book Club!

Anyone new is welcome!! :) Feel free to PM me with any questions or respond on here.

Depending on how many participants we have we may be choosing 2 books or we can vote to have a trilogy for 3 months. We'll see how it goes. :) DEADLINE FOR CHOOSING IS DEC. 1st. After that we can fill in the rest by doubling up or using a trilogy.

First come, first serve. For now, please choose 1 book for 1 month of your choice. Please consider the books that are before or after yours. We like to keep the series different from month to month. So if March is Casefiles and June is Digest, I'd suggest a SuperMystery, Original, Graphic Novel, or Secret Files....

When filling out the month, please indicate your username, the series, and the title of the book. Revised and Original texts are okay. It's too hard to do one or the other, so we include both.

Example: December- MacGyver- The Hardy Boys (Originals) #8 "The Mystery of Cabin Island"

January-

February-

March-

April-

May-

June-

July-

August-

September-

October-

November-

December-

Happy choosing! If you choose a book that was already discussed this year, you will be notified and given the chance to change it. :)

Last note....Please do not choose something that is rare or hard to find. Doing so limits who is able to discuss and who is not.

I hope to see some new and familiar names on the list!

Awesome! Breakdown in Axeblade is one of my favorites of the Digests. I will have to ponder a while on this and choose a book or two for the coming months... :)

Just echoing someone in another post, but December 1st is the deadline for picking the books for next year, and that's on this upcoming Wednesday.

I've already picked mine and it's already up there.

So, MacGyver, you picked 3 books?

Yeah- I hope it's not overreaching... I will be glad to retract some choices if others want to claim some months.

Captain, I don't see yours up there? I see tomswift and Mac. I guess I need to choose too. :)

Mac, I think you're fine...seeing as we don't have anyone else. Perhaps I will send some PMs tomorrow and see if Olivia or anyone else wants to add. Where is Spencer????

Then we can decide for sure.

I can wait to be last. :)

Sorry for the double post...But I think it will benefit us all if we give this a little more time. The holiday was just last week and I'm sure some of our regulars weren't able to get on here as much.

NEW DEADLINE WILL BE DEC. 15TH. That gives us 2 whole weeks!

January is already set...so we're good to go on that one! :)

Unless we have a huge amount of participants, current members can have 2 books on the list. Please update accordingly. Mac, you can wait to see what happens before you change or keep the 3rd one. :D

Did we already do The Melted Coins? If not, I'd like to read that in May. Preferably the original text. And for my second title, The Secret of the Old Mill. Put that anywhere you like except for February.

How about Hardy Boys casefile: The Genius Thieves? Could we do it in March?

On a side note, I might not be able to participate in each month. I have some of the listed books, but not all of them.  :-[

That's a good one! Did I forget to include March before? Duh to me!

Thanks AlwaysaJoeFan! :) I will add that on there.

Also, don't feel like you have to participate every month. :) However, sometimes the conversations start out about the book's specific plot or whatever...but it can turn into other discussions. So definitely stop by and check it out. You never know what will happen!

hardygirl847, thanks for the PM. I really was going to get back here a couple of days ago, but things have been so crazy. I apologize for my lateness.

Can I have dibs on March? I don't have a title yet because I need a bit to think about it (one that came to mind is already taken), plus I need to look at my books. And I'm not alert enough to make a decision right this second, so I'll let you guys know asap if that's okay :)

It's hard to know which one you have sometimes...and of course hard to find the RT. So, we usually say either one is fine. My book is an older copy but I'm still not 100% sure it's the OT.

Yes. I just failed to post the updated schedule. My fault! Sorry!! I would have noticed earlier but I haven't been on my computer in a few days.

I just noticed Trevor's second pick too...SO yeah...I am behind. SORRY guys!

UPDATED SCHEDULE AS OF 12.06.10

January- MacGyver, A Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys Super Mystery (1988 series)- #19 Passport to Danger

February- Hardygirl847-Hardy Boys Digests # 96-Wipeout

March- AlwaysaJoeFan-Hardy Boys Casefiles ?The Genius Thieves

Olivia, please let me know what you think.

I know it's probably in one of the threads that I haven't sifted through yet (which I will), but does the discussion start at the beginning or the end of the month?

I have a few picks, so everyone let me know which book you have better access to and we'll choose based on that. Also, let me know if it has been covered before.

New Year's Evil (Super Mystery) - Thought it fitting with the new year.

The Paris Connection (Super Mystery)

The Secret of the Soldier's Gold (Digest, #182)

The Borderline Case (Casefile, #25)

If none of those seem to work, and if anyone has an extra pick they really want to do, that's cool too. I just picked based on what I was going to read next anyway.

Sorry for making this such a lengthy process! I just got back on the computer today :-\

New Year's Evil would be a cool one. We've done a few books already to tie in with holidays during the year (which is why I chose Dead of Night for Halloween and The Mystery of Cabin Island for Christmas)- so that would be a nice book to do for one we haven't covered yet.

January and October are yours, Olivia.

Good choices! I have 3 of the 4. Maybe you could  think of a few more. Hopefully we can figure out something that the majority of us have access to.

Also, to answer your other question, we post discussions around the middle of the month. Then it goes from there. Sometimes it's a slow start and sometimes it's not.

If the person who is in charge of the discussion that month doesn't post it for a few days, I will post it for them. That way if someone can't make it on here (especially during the holidays), someone else is there to make sure the discussion starts.

I tend to try to post around the 15th of the month...give or take a day.

Hope that helps!

The Borderline Case (Casefile, #25)

All interesting choices, and books that I have access too.  But with The Paris Connection, considering that that is a sequel of sorts to A Crime For Christmas (Christmas introduces the Foxes who appear in Paris), I don't know whether people would want to read the sequel before the original story?  What do you guys think?

I've read both those books but it's been so long ago (and both books were read with some years in between the readings), I totally didn't realize The Paris Connection is something of a sequel to A Crime for Christmas- that's cool to know. 8)

I know I'm the holdup :-\  Every time I make time to go on here it never seems to be enough, and then I have to log out because of an appointment.

Okay, we'll do The Borderline Case (#25 Casefile) for sure.

Here's a few more choices for Originals (I figure they're the easiest to obtain):

The Great Airport Mystery
The Secret Warning
The Shore Road Mystery
The Missing Chums

Speak up with what you have or even which of the four you would like to do.

Let's try to decide in the next couple of days! hardygirl847 has been more than patient with me, and I thank you for that ;)

I vote for The Secret Warning. I've been wanting to read that one and haven't heard much about it.

A number of fans consider the 1966 version of The Secret Warning to be far superior to the 1938 version, and considering that I've read both in the past, I tend to agree, which is why I say that people who have not read the 1938 version are in for a doozy of a story.

I always like to do a reminder. Even I need one now and then. :)

Looking forward to it Olivia! :)

4 Casefiles, 4 Digests, 3 Originals, 1 SuperMystery

Looks like a good mix!

Also looks like a year where people don't want to discuss anything in the Undercover Brothers continuity.

Haha- guess so. Have we even had any of the Undercover Brothers books to discuss yet?

We had a Secret Files book back in September? October?  That's the closes to an Undercover Brothers book that I can think of.

Yeah no one even mentioned one. They don't tend to get the best reviews. Anything new coming out will be discussed separately anyways. I was going to mention Break Up for a book club discussion but decided against it because it will already be talked about to great lengths in March.

Yeah we did Trouble at the Arcade. I think they're cute stories but are less popular than say the Originals or Casefiles. I'm not opposed to any discussion but I know we try to pick things that most people have or have at least read once.

Not everyone can order the ones they don't have online like I do. I'm bad...don't tell the hubby!  ;D To clarify, I am not bragging at all. I don't want anyone to feel like they have to do that either. It's something I choose to do. That's all. :)

Maybe eventually we can at least do Extreme Danger, since that's the first one in The Hardy Boys: Undercover Brothers series.
It would be good to at least give it some mention and do some comparison with the Original 58 books (Original Text and Revised Text), the Digests, and the Casefiles and Supermysteries, etc.
(But I do wish they could've gotten a better subtitle name for this series- every time I hear it, I can't help but think of this really stupid movie from 2002- (Undercover Brother) (http://www.amazon.com/Undercover-Brother-Widescreen-Collectors-Griffin/dp/B000071ZZJ/ref=sr_1_1?s=dvd&ie=UTF8&qid=1294505135&sr=1-1)

Ugh I know what movie you're talking about. I think of that sometimes too. And it's not really a good thing. lol

I wouldn't mind at least doing the first one for comparison. I don't think I have that one but that doesn't mean I don't know how to find it. :) I'm soo bad. hehe

Looks like the boys are headed for a Wipeout in February 2011.  I remember that I've read the book a couple of times years ago, and I seem to recall finding that it was okay.  I'll have to re-read it.

Yeah....I think I did a reminder in the wrong thread. Oops!!

I'm excited to read it and see how it compares to the episode with Parker and Shaun. :)

As I recall there's surfing and that's about it, since the episode took place on one of the Hawaiian islands, whereas I think the book is set on the Mediterranean.

I think #40 in The Hardy Boys Casefiles, Fright Wave, might be a closer comparison. I know that one is set in Hawaii and it definitely involves surfing as well.

What do you mean you have to pay?   Last time I got book in on inter-library loan there was the option of paying a "rental fee" or not, and at least here in Ontario, none of the libraries ever charged a fee for a Hardy Boys or Tom Swift book.

It's a really great book to have. But you can always feed off what others say in the discussion. Sometimes it leads into interesting topics and not just the book itself.

Oh wow- that's interesting. I hadn't heard of that. I've done inter-library loans sometimes before and I don't think there was a fee involved. I think there may be fees for special cases where it's something rare or really valuable and tricky to get.

Tomswift is up next for April with Breakdown in Axeblade, Digest #94.

Look for the discussion thread around April 15th.

Also, if you don't have the book, that's okay. Many of our discussions lead into other areas that are not specifically about the book.

Enjoy, of course!

I do get PM messages through my email though if anyone ever really needed to tell me or ask me something.

I was able to read the book this week. 2 in one week is a good for me! :) So I'm anxiously awaiting your thread so I can post my thoughts.

Looks like everyone's been busy over the summer that we forgot about the book club, and we missed Sabotage At Sports City, Beyond the Law & Too Many Traitors, with SDL suppose to be headlining the September book, The Secret Of The Old Mill.

And considering that it is October in a few days, Olivia, I hope you've got #17 The Secret Warning ready!

yeah- unfortunately I think we all got busy during the summer and forgot...but we do have threads posted for Sabotage at Sports City, Beyond the Law and Too Many Traitors- so anyone who wants to can always go back and post thoughts on them whenever.
SDLAgent can still post a thread for The Secret of the Old Mill so people can chime in on thoughts...or we can just come back to that book next year perhaps.

Anyway, thanks for the reminder, man.

And then I'll be leading the discussion on Trial and Terror to wrap-up the year.

So do we want to start planning out a schedule for next year yet?...

Perhaps as a tribute to the Undercover Brothers series which seems to be nearing its demise, if the reports are accurate (and S&S doesn't issue a last minute stay-of-execution), then I think we really should finally do Extreme Danger one month- I'll even take it on and that way it'll force me to finally read it. lol ;D
