Title: What Have You Read? What's Your Favourites?
Post by: Olivia on November 07, 2007, 04:33:55 PM
I started this thread because I'm interested to see how many people have read the SMs, and which ones are your favourites?

So I first read a SM back when Operation: Titanic and Process of Elimination came out. (Ironically, I started when they stopped publishing the series). Anyways, I forgot about ND/HB for years but thanks to eBay and other used book websites, I now have the whole collection. Here's what I've read so far:

Double Crossing
New Year's Evil
Secrets of the Nile
Operation: Titanic
Process of Elimination

I've heard Secrets of the Nile is one of the top books in the series.

Believe it or not, I have not read any of them.  Sometime after I finish adding all the Casefiles to the Database, then I might get around to reading the SMs.  Hmmm, how many years does a human live?

SkyWarp, I hope you get around to reading at least one ;D

Lola, I had to pay around $20 for Secrets of the Nile :P

Kerin & Vindicator, thanks for your replies :)

I'm just finishing up Shock Waves and I'm going to start A Crime for Christmas soon in time for the holidays!

Secrets of the Nile I got for free from an old friend who was cleaning out her book shelf and she asked me if I wanted the book and I sais sure.

As for how many I've read of the series, that's easy.  I've read them all.  The only one I don't have yet is Dead On Arrival.  I read DOA thanks to inter-library loan.

Favorites, that's tough, even though I would have to say A Crime For Christmas is my #1 favorite SuperMystery '88.  Others would be Shock Waves, Last Resort, Mystery Train, Best Of Enemies, New Year's Evil, Courting Disaster, Evil in Amsterdam, Royal Revenge, Secrets of the Nile, just to name a few.

I think everyone who likes Frank, Joe, Nancy and Bess will like A Crime For Christmas, since all five of the characters have some of their best moments.  Who can forget how Bess talked the bakery employee into giving her one of those crowns.

Lola, I'm actually good at tracking down titles and finding the best prices. I also have some double copies of the SMs. Are there any specific titles that you are looking for/need? Maybe I can help you out!

tomswift2002, looks like you helped cinch A Crime for Christmas as one of the top SMs! I'm really looking forward to it now.

I've read Hit and misses, Danger Down Under, Hollywood Horror, A crime for Christmas, Double Crossing, Royal Revenge, Courting Disaster, Buried in Time, Mystery Train, and maybe a few more. I got Royal Revenge at a Grocery Store for some Library thing for 25 cents, Hollywood Horror for a quater at a yard sale, Danger Down Under for a quater at the library, a couple at bookstores, and some a I just read at the library. I think Royal Revenge, a Crime for Christmas, and Hollywood Horror are really good.

It depends. It has a different style including a more mature tone compared to ToT and DO. But a lot of people like it, including myself. I think if you were to get one from the '88 series, Secrets of the Nile one would be one of the better ones, definitely.

Yeah, it is a good book, plus Frank Hardy and Nancy Drew and Joe Hardy and Bess Marvin tie the knot with Frank and Nancy becoming Mr & Mrs. Frank Hardy and Joe and Bess Mr. & Mrs. Joe Hardy.

It sounds like a great book! Is it expensive or hard to find or anything? Because the cheapest one I saw was 14 dollars. :D

The Last Resort was really good. I'm surprised because I thought I wouldn't like it.

There's a good amount of "normal" stuff (which I like), a lot of Nancy/Frank, and great comedy. Ned also shows up, and I (surprisingly) like how he helps with the case.

The only thing that's a little weird was how Bess was portrayed. It's consistent from how she is in the other books in this universe, but it seemed to be a bit much sometimes.

I'm reading chronologically, with the exception of New Year's Evil, Secrets of the Nile, and the last two in the series which I've already read.

My favs so far (chronologically):

A Crime for Christmas
The Last Resort
Secrets of the Nile

Double Crossing and New Year's Evil are okay, too.

Double Crossings
Out of Control
At All Costs

It seems as if Ive read both The Paris Connection and The Last Resort but thats just becuase the covers look so familiar. Ive read the majority of the Casefiles/SuperMysteries as they were originally published so my memory is a bit fuzzy. Even so Ive been on a quest to collect the entire Casefiles/Files/SuperMysteries '88...and then busy myself with collecting the Originals for both ND and HB.

forgot to mention that Ive read A Crime for Christmas. I recall someone biting into a piece of chocolate covered plastique. Thats the only thing I remember from the book so Im going to have to hunt it down and reread it.

Reading Secrets of the Nile right now. And the characters in the book, Frank and Nancy were supposed to be Mr. and Mrs. Cole Addison and Joe and Bess: Mr. and Mrs. Cooper Addison. They went through airport security as their cover identities, but they don't put on the fake wedding rings until they are on the plane. And also at that time they are looking at the bios of who they are supposed to be...

I feel the same way that Joe does about tours, I'd rather look around myself and not listen to boring speeches.

Though I am no good at picking favourites (I love them all!)- I would list Courting Disaster as one favourite just because I've been to the city it's set in- beautiful Charleston, SC in the USA. :) 8)
Islands of Intrigue is another one like that because I was blessed to be able to visit that book's setting in Athens, Greece as well. (In fact, I think I may have even been reading that book while I was there for that reason.)
That is not something I can claim for many books. The Hardys and Nancy go to tons more places than I can afford to go. It is neat when I can compare the descriptions of places to reality and recognize things from having been there.  :) 8)

Maybe when I have time, I'll look through these books again and do a fuller list based more on the plots.

Well Dead On Arrival & Royal Revenge both take place in River Heights, so that's a hard place to go to in real life.

The Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew go to plenty of real life places and often have fairly accurate descriptions, thanks to writers actually having been to some of them. (I remember reading that Harriett Adams visited a number of the places used for book settings.)
