Title: Hot Wheels
Post by: Bigfootman on February 18, 2009, 06:43:44 PM
I might inter-libary loan this but I need to know a few things without to much spoilers.

How much action was there?
How good was the writing?

In Hot Wheels there is not a lot of fisticuff-action, like in other books, since Joe is essentially a Nascar driver in this book, with Frank, Callie, Vanessa and a few other one-book-only-friends from the State University in Bayport as Joe's back-up/mechanical crew.  So, the majority of the book takes place while Joe races from New Mexico to, I believe, Nevada, since the SUB team has "invented" a solar-powered car.  Infact, I believe the run of the race is based on the actual races that take place every year in the Southern US.

But, along the way, the original driver for the SUB car gets poisoned, people get death threats, a car's electrical system gets set on fire, and there is a constant rivalry between two team's, because one team's driver managed to seduce a lovely woman from another team, over to his team.

I would say that you definitely need to read this book.  The writing is superb, and a lot better than the book just before this one, Deadly Engagement.

Yeah, most of the action takes place while the Hardys are at hotels.  So there are a number of scenes where the author will either be in the car with Joe, or in the support van with Frank and the others and all that they are doing are talking about the case and the evidence that they have so far (really, what else can you do in a situation like that?), and also talking about how the solar car is holding up and how other teams are able to have batteries register at the end of a leg, with loses being equal to that of like the car moving from its parking space to the front door of the hotel.

I also give Hot Wheels a 10 out of 10.  And how very funny that we are talking about this book right around the time of Earth Hour.

I would agree with Hot Wheels ranking up there with Operation Phoenix, but Phoenix was better.

I haven't read ''Hot Wheels'', myself. Casefiles are so hard to come by around here.

I remember that back in the late 90's Hot Wheels was one of the later numbers that a lot of libraries had in their collections.  I guess that even when the Casefiles were out, kids found Hot Wheels to be one of the best books out.
