Title: Review of Murder House the third book
Post by: bozonessinc on September 30, 2008, 06:26:27 PM
SPOILERS AHEAD

Murder House, just came out September 30th, and well that is today, well at least the  day I wrote this maybe  not the day I posted it. So I was reading the final long awaited (At least for me) book.
CAUTION SPOILERS

So, I had seen the cover for a while now and it looked kind of cool, though I would have like to see them make Joe out to be a little more rich on the cover. They could have added his sunglasses maybe. I think on the cover he would be the one who was wearing the suit.
On the cover Frank looked like a normal teacher who was scared of something that was going on, though it's not like Frank in this book to be nervous. Accept at the end.
So now I will get to the book, well all of the contests were good and I guess they are there to make you wander and add the TV show aspect to it. I like how they start out with the dirt bike scene because it gets those who won't read a book unless it has extreme sports in it happy.
Then when the brakes fail, and Franks has to help Georgina. Then some comes over the jump, it made you wander whether the book would go with its title of Murder House. Maybe this would be the end of Frank, or at least he would be injured though I think by the time the next book came out they would have changed it so he had made a full recovery...
Brynn, I think that with both of them liking her thoughout the trilogy, that did enough to establish to us, that she was not the killer. Just to make us laugh at Frank and also Joes flirting skills. I think that by being lovey-dovey with them both she was trying to make everyone not suspect her because she acts so innocent.
Gail and Olivia, the poor unite, well, and make an alliance. I think that the alliance was a stupid add on, because while all of the poor members of the group would not want to share the money, it was simply a tactic to get them some help for the contest.
Back on the subject of Brynn, she had some issues I guess in the end and well, being back in the place where your parents died I am sure would bring back some memories? I don't know if the author decided at the start of the trilogy that he was going to make Brynn nina or just at the end when they needed to decide who they would make out to be the saboteur. I think when they save Ninas life when she is trying to kill herself it shows how much they care about her. I cant wait for the Double Danger trilogy and I am wandering if it will be another TV show based one like Deprivation house, on the back cover it shows the cover of the next book with TV things on it, which makes you think that it may be based on a TV Show again. I'm bozonessinc and this review is my opinion and may not be used for any other purpose other than the forum.

Whats your review?

I agree about the cover, they should have dressed Joe better.  And I liked all three books in the series.

With the covers I'm wondering if they took the pictures of the actors at a point where the manuscript maybe had Frank as the rich kid and Joe as the poor kid, so that's why Frank looks all dressed up and high-class on all the covers.

As for the plot: very weak.

To me, it looks like Joe's more in style then Frank. It's not like all rich kids go around with suits and ties or something.

In response to bozonessinc's review:

-Good idea about Joe having the sunglasses on the cover, although maybe they did try and the look didn't work (i.e. it looked weird or made him look like a gangster or a bad guy or a wannabe cool guy). Also, normally when people cover their face it's almost a sign not to trust them as per mise en scene, depending on the context and that's not the impression Joe's suppose to make as we're suppose to relate or connect with him.

-The dirt bike scene was interesting.

-I never got why they never suspected Brynn - you're suppose to look out for everyone! Unless Frank and Joe did think about her early on in the trilogy and I just forgot about it.

To be honest, I wasn't sure what I thought about her as a romantic subplot, but in hindsight I clearly see it did bring some "normalness" and a needed break from everything else.

On another note, I think the author(s) had to know from the beginning that Brynn was Nina because the story about the murder in the house years ago was brought up from the start. Or the writer(s) had to at least have a pretty good idea where they were going so they could set it up.

-I don't think the "poor people" alliance in and of itself was a bad idea because I thought it was realistic. The way they inplemented it was decent in the beginning, but as time went on it was poorly executed and just sort of dropped in here and there. But it had some decent use overall - like showing how far some people will go, or when to stop.

I wish Frank could have kissed Brynn. It would have made the story more juicy.

If I can't finish a Hardy boys book, that almost always means I REALLY hated it. Plus, I read half of a plot summery, and desided I had better things to do then keep on reading the book. I may finnish it another day, but I have other things to do.  I even finished Survival of the fittest, and I hated that book! There are only a few books I never finished:
-The Haunted Fort (Bluespine)
-Demon's Den (Digest, I had to return it to the libary. I kinda of liked it, but I could not renew it.)
-Running On Fumes (UB)
-Murder House trilogy (UB)
-Haunted (UB, stopped half way in)
-High Survival (SM)
-The Artic Petrol Mystery (Bluespine)

Books I hated but I finished:
-Cold Sweat (Casefile)
-Shock Jock (Casefile)
-Rocky Road (UB)
-Mission: Myhem (Casefile)
-The Yellow Feather Mystery (Bluespine)
-Operation: Titanic (SM)

Ever thought that maybe it might get better? :)
It's a UB, so that stops all chance of it getting better! A UB that starts off bad is bad! Oh yeah, it's also a dumb relality show plot, therefore it stinks even more.I also skipped a few chapters ahead and the book got even worse!
UB + trilogy + relality show=   :P

Maybe you should finish it, and read the whole thing. Then maybe I might take you seriously, because then you'll know what you're talking about. :)

-Murder House trilogy (UB)-Haunted (UB, stopped half way in)
-High Survival (SM)
-The Artic Petrol Mystery (Bluespine)

Books I hated but I finished:
-Cold Sweat (Casefile)
-Shock Jock (Casefile)
-Rocky Road (UB)
-Mission: Myhem (Casefile)
-The Yellow Feather Mystery (Bluespine)
-Operation: Titanic (SM)
-Survival of the fittest (Casefile)
-Burned (UB)
-Deadman In Deadwood (Casefile)

I have finished the first book recently, and it sucked! It was the most boring book ever! Not only was it an overused plot, but the clifhangers sucked!

WORST. BOOK. EVER.
Seriously, I've been reading this one book for four months, and I put it down for "The Robe" , I had to wash the bad impression out with 3 casefiles. The worse part? I have 60 pages left to go...  :'(

This being my first Hardy Trilogy, I can't ---with good faith--- proclaim that. But I certainly would hope so. It's barely above bad fan fiction.

Okay, it's reviews like these that don't make me want to read the rest of the UB books..... lol- so far, one (the first book) has been plenty bad enough. Maybe some day I'll get through them all.
